Shoes following ankle surgery

I'm having an op in just over a week which means my ankle will be in plaster/boot for 6+ weeks. It will then be swollen for several more months.

Any suggestions for low cut summer shoes, I expect flip flops and anything with an ankle strap is out?

Also does being in a boot add much height as I might need to get a pair of shoes to balance me out . . .

Been in a boot does add height but it’s manageable in normal shoe on the other foot, my favourite was a nike trainer which had quite a deep sole. After my ankle surgery once out of the boot I was just in normal flat shoes. My ankle was swollen but never to the extent it stopped me wearing anything. Good luck, what are you having done.

Thanks. I'm having some bone ground away, the joint cleared out and the ligaments braced and reattached. So I'll have two wounds too.

I've been told to expect swelling for up to 12 months.

Useful to hear the boot height wasn't too bad though

Similar to my surgery. I had bone removed and tendon reattached. Was 13 months ago, ankle is still slightly swollen.

How was it? And were you really stuck inside in bed for the first 4/6 weeks.

Pain I'm not bothered about, mental health from being stuck inside most definitely a bigger worry

I was in bed for two weeks and off work for six weeks. Really important to keep your ankle elevated for two weeks. Sofa would be ok but we don’t have a loo downstairs so I found it easier to stay upstairs. I struggle with crutches and was just very tired. I was getting out and about a bit after two weeks, I have an automatic car so could drive.

sadly it looks like they might have to redo the surgery, im off for an mri today!

oh non, good luck today. And thank you

Are you hypermobile/EDS? I am and surgeon has warned it likely won't last but it's so sore and unstable it may give me a while til it stretches back out

It depends on the surgery, my daughter has had three ankle surgeries after a bad break which needed plating and pinning, 15 years ago. expect your ankle to be swollen for a while. After that operation she wore trainers, flip flops, open toes etc.
She’s had ankle fusion surgery a year ago, the metal work on her her x ray resembles a Roman gladiator sandal designed by Screwfix.
She wears Sliders, Ankle Boots and trainers.

My daughters second op was to remove some metal work in prep for ankle fusion, The original trauma caused arthritis and bone erosion which made the ankle unstable. You’ll be Non weight bearing for a while, we hired a wheelchair from the Red Cross, it made life easier for her.

She moved in with us as we have a second reception room we made into a bedroom for her, we also have a downstairs loo and our house is wheelchair friendly.
She’s moving back to her own place on Friday.
Good luck OP hope it all goes well for you.

I’m definitely hyper mobile, think I have eds. dd has a formal eds diagnosis, I’ve never pursued one
