Can this be dressed up for a wedding?

Struggling to find anything I like. Square necks suit me and I like this colour/pattern. Can I make it look smart enough for a wedding guest outfit? It’s a uk hotel wedding if that makes a difference.

I think it looks lovely @Hairybaker - and far nicer than those Next dresses!

Can I please hijack your thread a bit and ask the exact same question about a dress I've chosen for a wedding? I never wear anything smart dresses and I have no idea whether this is suitable for a wedding (being as it's in the "casual dresses" section of the website) or what shoes/bag/etc would look right with it...

FWIW I'm the same height as the model and same colouration but a UK14.

SillySallySassySausage · 18/04/2022 00:31

@CobraChicken I think that could definitely be dressed up for a wedding. It's lovely.

CobraChicken · 18/04/2022 00:38

Thanks! I haven't been to a wedding in about 20 years and the last one I attended I was a bridesmaid, so didn't have to choose what to wear 🤣

SillySallySassySausage · 18/04/2022 00:46

I think if you wore shoes with a lighter, daintier appearance it would lift it's "dressy level"
What are you like with heels? I think you could wear wedges but the ones on the model are a bit heavy looking but so much depends on how it looks on you and your individual style.

Sorry, I meant to add that the 2 pictures would be what I may look to style that dress with. Depends on what colours are in that dress and your skin tone.

greenlynx · 18/04/2022 01:00

It might be just ok with suitable bag, shoes, jewellery but might be a bit too casual depending on what other people will be wearing.
What’s your role at the wedding?

CarpetDiem · 18/04/2022 01:57

Sorry- I think it’s the twee pattern with the puff sleeves that’s putting me off, not very weddingy imho

No, I'm not good with heels unfortunately. Do you think these www.amazon.ca/dp/B07SVPWMK2 would be okay if the blue/teal in them matched a colour in the dress (too hard to tell from photos) or would it be better to stick with a more neutral coloured shoe?

1forAll74 · 18/04/2022 04:02

I think it's fine for a wedding, i like the neckline and sleeves. If you have bought it already, and feel good in it, that's all that matters.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/04/2022 08:11

@CobraChicken I really like the dress.
I don't like those sandals at all though.

bananaboats · 18/04/2022 11:11

I like the style but it's more something I would wear day to day and probably too casual for any wedding I've ever been too.

That dress is beautiful and absolutely fine for a wedding. It's a gazillion times nicer than the too tight Next horrors.
WouldBeGood · 18/04/2022 14:42

@CobraChicken I like that dress!

@Hairybaker I’m in the no camp, looks very casual to me.

Though I’m a fan of a square neck too, very becoming.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/04/2022 14:45

It's perfect.

The Next dresses look awful!

KimikosNightmare · 18/04/2022 14:49

OP - your dress is fine.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/04/2022 14:54

& Other stores has some. I've square necks dresses. I like this one

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

Thanks! I think I agree. They're not something I'd ever be likely to wear again, either, so I'd begrudge paying more for them than the dress Grin

What style of shoes do you suggest? I can't do heels (where I'd require balance) but wedges would be okay so I'm not limited to only totally flat options.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/04/2022 19:40

@CobraChicken Maybe a pale pink block heeled sandal? Clarks have got these, which look as if they'd be comfortable/easy to walk in. I know nothing about shoes though and tend to like things that nobody else does!

Sakura7 · 18/04/2022 19:47

It depends where you are. In Ireland people get very dressed up for weddings so it would be too casual there. Maybe in London it's a bit more relaxed.

Iamthewombat · 18/04/2022 20:35

Sorry, OP. I don’t like it at all. It puts me in mind of something from a Simplicity dress pattern from the 1970s. Won’t you be disappointed at the wedding, not to have worn something a bit nicer?

I’m going to disagree with the pp who had been to a hotel wedding recently and said that being more casual and dressed down at those events is a trend. I don’t agree. I’ve been to two hotel weddings in the past month and if anything, guests made more of an effort, not less. I’m glad that I did, or I wouldn’t have enjoyed the day. It’s no fun feeling underdressed and as if you have got it wrong.

I realise that this is disappointing news to the very vocal MN contingent who would like to see all high heeled shoes and fitted dresses ritually burned, but there it is.

WouldBeGood · 18/04/2022 20:59

I’m glad to hear that @Iamthewombat- I have a wedding coming up and want to be glam!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/04/2022 21:03

I think with the right shoes - maybe in bronze or rose gold - and a big, statement necklace - it'll look great.
