Chin Hair. Is it a good idea to Epilate the hair?

I've had a bout 9 sessions of laser a few years ago. The laser seems to have worked on the sides of my face. However it seems that it made the chin hair a bit worse, thicker and more I think. I recently started to thread my hair with an electric threading machine (www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/WAYCOM-Electric-Epilator-Threading-Depilation/dp/B06XHNSXX8/ref=asc_df_B06XHNSXX8?linkCode=df0&psc=1%29&hvnetw=o&hvdev=c&hvadid=79989563336532&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvtargid=pla-4583589108234836&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-style-and-beauty-4531640-Chin-Hair-Is-it-a-good-idea-to-Epilate-the-hair" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/WAYCOM-Electric-Epilator-Threading-Depilation/dp/B06XHNSXX8/ref=asc_df_B06XHNSXX8?tag=bingshoppinga-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=79989563336532&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4583589108234836&psc=1) and hair has grown back slightly after 7 days.

However, this made me think about epilating. Threading removes hair from the follicle so after 7 days I've seen regrowth. I thought if I use epilating instead, I might have a hair free chin for a few weeks, as Epilating removes hair from the root.

Will epilating give me spots on the chin/jaw? Anyone tried epilating their face? I don't want to go back to laser or use IPL for a personal choice. These things can have side effects which will show later on, so I don't want to use those.

Chin hair is thick and black. Thanks.

No idea if it’s a good idea or not but it’s what I do, just run my epilator over once a week or so and keeps everything a lot more manageable though I still get the odd one that grows overnight. Haven’t noticed any issues at all and wish I could do my upper lip too but that is a step too far so still wax that.

Deadivy · 17/04/2022 08:00

I do it once a week with a Philips bikini epilator. No spots at all.

SheWoreYellow · 17/04/2022 08:04

How is that thing doing anything different to plucking/waxing/threading?

SheWoreYellow · 17/04/2022 08:05

Ah are you confusing epilation with electrolysis?

ImAvingOops · 17/04/2022 08:10

I do my top lip with my leg epilator occasionally. You should make sure you clean the area after to avoid spots.

Gensola · 17/04/2022 08:14

An epilator doesn’t do anything different than plucking/threading or waxing - it’s just a mechanised plucking device

TulipsGarden · 17/04/2022 08:18

Epilating won't do anything that threading doesn't do, they both pull hair out by the root.

I use a Philips Lumea and that works well, it comes back but much more slowly.

mumznet · 17/04/2022 11:54

@SheWoreYellow thanks. no I am aware of electrolysis that is a long term thing. I'm not confusing it with that but I thought the way that threading and epilating pull hair out is different. Epilating causes more pain as it pulls from a deeper area of the hair base. Or maybe this website is exaggerating? So basically the threading I have started about 12 days ago and not done anything since then. Today I can see hairs growing back, some are still just looking like a black dot on the skin, but some are quite small that could go out with threading. However, I am on my period tomorrow, so is it still okay to do threading around period time?? I've heard something that not to remove hair around this time? Is this a strict no? and what is the reason for this does anyone know?

I was just thinking that if Epilating would be more effective than threading because of what this website says....since it pulls it out from more deeper...... askanydifference.com/difference-between-epilator-and-threading/

12 days is not bad, a little bit of hair were back after a week. I'm just wondering if epilating would maybe grow hair back after a month. Epilating does reduce hair permanently over time so I am thinking if instead of threading I should do epilating. Or is there no difference and I am being silly?

the threading works great, isn't too painful after soaking chin for 10 minutes in a bowl of water.

@ImAvingOops and @Okbutnotgreat thanks. which one do you use, so I could look into purchasing one maybe?

I don't want anything that would affect my face. The link below says that epilating causes sagging of the face but threading doesn't? . askanydifference.com/difference-between-epilator-and-threading/

OP posts:
mumznet · 17/04/2022 12:03

the threading has to be done on a dry face. But I can see with epilating it can be wet too, which sounds positive.

I'm so scared to use other things, waxing, IPL and laser, as I may get some damaged done to my skin which will show after 20 years. like sagging, fat loss w ith laser and then face could look strange/narrower. etc.

I find epilating on my jawline ok but I can’t quite take the pain of it on my upper lip and it does give me spots there afterwards

I use a braun facial one
It’s just like tweezers but j was finding too often I was snagging the skin with my tweezers by mistake and getting little wounds from that

If you pull a hair out, you pull a hair out. It’s the same.

mumznet · 17/04/2022 13:20

@SheWoreYellow thank you for clarifying, really helps.

@User0610134049 thank you for sharing. The laser completely removed my upper lip hair and from the sides of the face, if that is something that you want to look into. There is some cost to it and I am not sure of the longer term side effect which the company do not speak about openly. but the good thing is never had to do my upper lip again.

I did 6 laser sessions and it worked on the sides and upper lip. but the chin didn't work. the lady suggested 3 top up sessions, which I did. But it still didn't work. Hair on chin is thick and I think has come back thicker after laser. laser was done several years ago, and the effect on the sides and upper lip looks to be permanent.

After I had the laser I read something online about a lady, who had laser but then afterwards her face shape changed and she wasn't happy. the laser shrank her fat or something inside the skin too and now she looked horrible, didnt like her narrow face. so I haven't gone back to laser, also the top ups didn't work, so no point to go there again.

Thanks mumznet, my upper lip hair is peach fluff and very fair and fine, would electrolysis work ok on that or is that the treatment that works best where there’s contrast between skin and hair?

mumznet · 17/04/2022 13:37

@User0610134049 I'm not sure about electrolysis sorry. If it is so fine then I would use tinkle razor would that be suitable maybe? I was using tinkle razor on my chin, but the hair on the chin is thick so tinkle razor wasn't good for that. But for fine hair tinkle razor is really good. also no pain. www.bing.com/aclk?ld=e8M2qNPX3tdmVn0DlR7tXehTVUCUzE5k64-YvN7aGpEisYt6N8MmYx3L6l4CnfDWmGhpQGHQsW31i0gHnsZ3sICFMy6jCexfv4w0Uc5usLaCZ8s0svEXYMZq0nJ1uXNPU2dKibVGce4-nvo_zYnyS8TFh816svOaslSCpdUKDGFgcYfQrmocH9FX92ZUbECLj-OB6qzA&u=aHR0cHMlM2ElMmYlMmZ3d3cuYW1hem9uLmNvLnVrJTJmRXllYnJvdy1SYXpvci1CZWF1dGlmdWwtRXllYnJvd3MtMTJwY3MlMmZkcCUyZkIwMDhOMU5GTE8lMmZyZWYlM2Rhc2NfZGZfQjAwOE4xTkZMTyUzZnRhZyUzZGJpbmdzaG9wcGluZ2EtMjElMjZsaW5rQ29kZSUzZGRmMCUyNmh2YWRpZCUzZDgwNjA4MDAyOTcxMTk4JTI2aHZuZXR3JTNkbyUyNmh2cW10JTNkZSUyNmh2Ym10JTNkYmUlMjZodmRldiUzZGMlMjZodmxvY2ludCUzZCUyNmh2bG9jcGh5JTNkJTI2aHZ0YXJnaWQlM2RwbGEtNDU4NDIwNzU4MDI1NjY3MyUyNnBzYyUzZDE&rlid=d3550d5cdc6e10677add6f00d595c47e&ntb=1

for threading on the chin, I do it after a shower and then soak if for another ten minutes in a bowl of hot/warm water as hot as I can bear it (not burning myself but hot enough so it stays warm for 10 minutes) then did the threading. I'm very annoyed with pain, so make sure I soak the skin first.

But the above is a bit annoying to do, would a facial steamer do the trick of opening the pores and should I buy one of that instead? thanks

mumznet · 17/04/2022 13:41

also not to mention how awkward it was to stay in a funny position for 10 minutes holding a bowl in my lap and all I could think about was that I need googles and nose thing for next time so I can go in deeper in the water lol....

However, I am on my period tomorrow, so is it still okay to do threading around period time?? I've heard something that not to remove hair around this time? you might fine it more painful than at other times of your cycle but you could always take painkillers?

mumznet · 17/04/2022 13:47

@Moochio thanks, a good soak will have to do the trick. I never take pain killers, other than for childbirth or for a serious infection. I know some people take pain killers for minor things. I heard side effects of pain killers if we take too many. do I sound v health conscious person, I am a little bit to be honest :-) but can't help myself.

OP posts:
Moochio · 17/04/2022 14:03

Just do it without the painkillers then.

ImAvingOops · 17/04/2022 14:13

I've got a Braun leg epilator OP. It's not for faces but it seems to do the job on my tache.

mumznet · 17/04/2022 15:40

@Moochio thanks will try it tomorrow. I am thinking to get a steamer, I find it annoying to have to shower then threading.
