Best way to sell clothes?

Blert · 16/04/2022 15:22

I have hundreds of items of clothing and jewellery that I don’t wear. I thought I was doing OK by having in-season in the wardrobe, and out of season in storage, but realistically I have far too much stored and would happily get rid of at least a third of what’s in my wardrobe.

I would like to sell rather than donate because I think if someone has bought the item it is more likely to be used. If it goes to a charity shop it still has a good chance of ending up in landfill.

Mostly it’s Boden, East, Gudrun, Seasalt, White Stuff etc. some higher end too.

But what’s the best way to sell? What are peoples experiences of the different platforms?

It seems a lot of people have switched to Vinted rather than eBay, but when I look on Vinted a lot of things have been listed for over a year.

Ideally I would like to just do 10 items per week every week and work my way through it. List them, sell them, ship them. I don’t really have the mental energy (or the space) to be keeping track of “inventory” that has been listed but not sold.

Any tips, tricks, advice much appreciated!

Most stuff will sell within a couple of listings on ebay. So I'd just list it wherever and then take it to the charity shop after a month.

When I was at uni I had a part time job in a dress agency. Customers would bring clothes in and we would sell them for 50% commission. (I made a killing as I would go around the charity shops and buy designer brands, then bring them in to sell).

It’s a shame there isn’t anything like that now! Even a service where someone might list stuff on eBay or Marketplace for you. If I were still a student I would set something up.

I have loads of stuff to sell but can’t be arsed so following with interest.

FuckingHateRats · 16/04/2022 17:21

I much prefer Vinted but think it's a harder process if you don't have a printer.

I found a place called I Second That which will sell for you, but it looks like a one woman band, and the lower end of the market.

I might see if I can hire a local teenager and just get them to list/pack everything for me.

There's still dress agencies around. I have sold a few things from them and currently have a few pieces in my local one. they generally sell higher end items. No high street brands. TBH I don't know how they stay in business because the items are being sold at a higher price than what someone could often buy them on clearance for. But yes, I suppose buying things at a lower price form charity shops and online and then selling them through the dress agency can make you a bit of extra cash, but it takes patience.

I use eBay. I sell 'buy it now' usually at the prices suggested by the app. Last summer I made £2500 selling old stuff I no longer wore. Similar brands to you. This year I've only recently started properly listing and have made £564 in last 90 days barely any effort. Takes less than 5 mon the app per item. I don't see this as making money but a way to recycle my unwanted clothes and have money to buy other things. My aim is to buy less than I sell! I know Vinted is really popular on here but those brands do well on eBay and I had no success at all listing on Vinted last year. Maybe it's a younger age group that use it?

Blert · 16/04/2022 19:13

That’s great going @Sooverthemill. Do you have any particular routine for listing/packing? I find I can usually do the first batch OK but then life gets in the way and I am late packing and sendings things, have forgotten to list the next lot and it all gets very stressful.

I use eBay a lot too, and quite like it.

Yes, you've definitely got to be on top of packing and posting. You can choose between Buy it nows or Auctions - I suppose with auctions you'd only have to post once a week if you set them all to end on the same day. I prefer Buy it nows - I want to sell my items as soon as possible and to get some money for them. If they don't sell after a week, I usually reduce the price a little.

Mimijamroll · 16/04/2022 20:03

I've used ebay and the brands you've mentioned do sell well on there. As pp have said you can do a buy it now or auction.
I would be tempted to auction your higher end stuff personally.

Agree with this If you have a printer you'll be fine

E bay. I did come across this site which might suit the Boden stuff - they seem to love it . Facebook :

I've gone right off ebay since they unilaterally pulled a listing I had for a Michael Kors watch on the basis it may be fake. It's not and I have the receipt to prove it but there is no right of appeal :-(

clairebear610 · 16/04/2022 21:48

I have always used eBay but recently a friend recommended vinted to me. Can I ask though, is it possible to sell on vinted if you don't have a printer? Thanks

Lanaa · 17/04/2022 06:19

eBay is probably best. I find the prices really low on vinted. If you want to sell as a job lot please send me a message. I'd be interested in buying.

Sooverthemill · 17/04/2022 07:13

@Blert I usually pull out 5 things from my pile and list those at a time( my own routine means around 9 am on a Wednesday!). I hang the item on my larder door where there is decent light and start listing, using camera via app. If I can find a stock photo I also add that in especially if it shows it on a person. I add as many details as I can, I take a photo of the care and fabric label and I add measurements ( pit to pit, length).

I buy postage labels via the app ( slightly cheaper than by Royal Mail or Hermes). I list at £4 postage unless it's bulky. That is at current prices £2.90 for post and 48p to be picked up from my home and the extra is tape, bags etc. I reuse all packaging that comes to the house so that limits costs a bit.

I try to post next working day. I've only had 1 negative review ( non clothing) because person didn't like it and one neutral because it didn't fit. I always give positive it's even if a buyer is a bit snarky. I never argue. I refund if someone argues ( twice I think and they gave me good feedback!). I always message buyers to say when I've posted even though app does it ( takes seconds).

I do buy it now as it's easy. I try to take advantage of any selling offers eg lower price over x weekend.

I only sell stuff that I could keep wearing if I still liked it, ie nothing tatty or worn out. I own up to bobbling, I take photos of any marks.

HTH

Yes I agree about the "look" of Vinted and the prices.
WhyTheWhales · 17/04/2022 09:40

I like Vinted. You can limit your delivery options so you only use the parcel shops local to you where you can print in store. I've made a decent amount on there. I tend to sell decent brands in good condition and don't want huge amounts of money for them, so things do sell quickly
