Having a day out in London and want to actually purchase some everyday outfits and rather than wandering aimlessly would like to focus on a couple of areas where we could both find a good choice of shops to suit our needs. Not looking for designer but want to feel that we're in London rather than a shopping presinct....contemplating Covent garden and King's Rd? Would there be better options for us?

The large Uniqlo on Regent Street has closed and is being replaced by one on the other side of the road, which is supposed to be open on 22nd April. So, if you were planning a trip before then, be warned! (The closest alternative is on Oxford Street, roughly opposite M&S).

Why not Westfield Shepherd’s Bush? Got everything you want there if shopping is your main activity

@aramox1

People saying Oxford St is busy have you been there recently? It's dead. And the street feels grim. Covent garden etc much better, sadly.
Agreed, went a couple of weeks ago, Selfridges was worth the visit but the rest of Oxford Street felt very tired.
TottersBlankly · 14/04/2022 07:59

Cannot understand why anyone would recommend Oxford St! Sensible people (like me) go to great lengths to avoid it.

Definitely go to Coal Drops Yard for lunch or dinner next time you’re in London, Floisme.

I still love the Marylebone area for shopping. Plus Covent Garden. Shoreditch has a wonderful array of shops - almost worth the journey to get there.

@Floisme

Ah thanks for the Coal Drops Yard intel PartyPCN and Remus - I'm hoping to be in London in a couple of weeks but only for a short trip so I'll probably give it a miss. Thanks for starting this thread op, it's useful for me too.

What's Marylebone like now? I used to enjoy it for a bit of genteel shopping and cake: from memory, Toast, Me and Em, Brora, some great charity shops and The Wallace Collection. But there might not be much there for a teenager?

Marylebone is literally right behind oxford Street anyway so worth a visit. Pop through St Christopher's Place which is a lovely cute area for lunch off Oxford St & Marylebone High St. yes Marylebone charity shops are incredible! Then aside from JL / Selfridges avoid Oxord St abs cut down South Molton St / New Bond St. I actually quite like the Fenwicks store down there, great for shoes. How about a wander through Burlington's Arcade to look at the window displays and coffee on Piccadilly around St James?
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 14/04/2022 14:25

I don't think Marylebone has much to appeal to 18 year olds though?

I hate Oxford Street other than John Lewis and maybe Selfridges, but it's easy to just go to those and avoid the rest - or for OP to go to those whilst dd hits Zara, H&M etc.

Floisme · 14/04/2022 18:17

Yeah I was thinking of the op rather than the 18 year-old when I said Marylebone. But then I hadn't realised it was so close to Oxford St - I've never really got my head round how London neighbourhoods fit together - so maybe the op could go to Marylebone while her daughter does the big stores?

Then again, she might have been hoping for a bit of mum-daughter quality time, and are teenagers who've been bought up shopping online interested in flagship stores?

But thanks TottersBlankly - will try Coal Drops Yard for eating if not shopping!

We had a fab day thanks, walked 15km! Started at Covent Garden, we had lunch at Scarlett Green (ranked 3rd on Tripadvisor, but not sure why as food was only ok and service very slow). Went to Regent st (discovered too late that Uniqlo wasn’t open yet) so went to Oxford street. It is run down and incredibly busy but my daughter has had online orders from Burshka and discovered they had a shop there. Successful shop but an hours queue for the fitting room! Had a much more civilised potter around John Lewis. Thanks for all the advice. We need to go again to do the bits we missed.

There are 2 Uniqlos on Oxford Street for your next visit.

Thanks @Jewel1968
