Buying clothes for DH

Can anyone help sort out summer clothes for DH who is impossible to please?

We are going on holiday to Italy in 2 weeks time and he has announced that he last bought clothes in 2015 (not a surprise), everything is worn out and he doesn't have any short-sleeved shirts, polo tops, linen trousers to wear.

This is totally true as I've been hoping he would notice this for years as he's been wearing some hideous linen/poly trousers I could see his boxers through - of course now he's noticed with 3 shopping days before the holiday and it's an emergency and somehow my fault.

We went into town today and I left him on his own to try stuff on. It was hopeless. Apparently M+S was awful, he wasn't paying the prices in John Lewis and Next seemed to only have stuff in camo. These are the only 3 shops he knows Angry

Given I know nothing about menswear, can you help?

He is a late 40s, unexciting dresser who is going on holiday with a wife who will be wearing head-to-toe Toast. His winter clothing is cords and jumpers, largely bought for him as Christmas presents to avoid him moaning about the price - cost is not an issue here, he is!

I think both M&S and Next online will have enough reasonable quality and price basics for him. There will be more choice online.

There’s 20% off on lots of men’s stuff on John Lewis’s website. If you have a nearby Waitrose and order early enough, it’s there the next day to collect. Returns are easy too. There’s so much choice on there, there must be something suitable!

DH is a fashion refusenik.
Had same holiday clothes for 10 years.
One short sleeve shirt. One pair linen trousers. Two pairs shorts. Hiking sandals or canvas trainers. Plus everyday jeans and be t shirts.
Measure him and order it all from Next.
Anything missing you can buy in Italy, they have nicer clothes anyway .

My late 30s DH seems to spend the summer in Fat Face, H&M and Criminal - usually shorts and t-shirts from each of the above. Jumpers thrown on when it’s cold - a mix of these, often the ones he wears in winter.

I’ve been supplementing his wardrobe with bits from White Stuff, which he seems to like.

Have just looked online at Next. It looks a lot better online.

Instore it was more like this:

www.next.co.uk/g262007s1/m53062#m53062

He's a spindly academic who is going to museums, not going monster trucking Grin

Unfortunately I'm away for work, we live in the middle of nowhere and DH doesn't drive which ruins Click and Collect. However he is going to be forced to enter the modern age of internet shopping rather than insisting on trying everything on in store.

I've literally no idea why you would get involved in this. Literally none. I am aware my post is of no help. Just my jaw was on the floor reading it.

Uniqlo!
Great shorts, chinos, linen, light shirts and good quality t shirts. Easy to do an order online.

You have no idea what it is like living with someone who can take months to make a minor decision - yes, he more than likely is autistic.

Normally it is ignorable and I just let him bumble on obsessively reading review sites until he finally feels able to make a decision.

However given 1. imminence of holiday and 2. my personal preference not to see the see-through trousers ever again this technique is not working.

Thank-you @ShadowPuppets for suggestion of Fatface and White Stuff. Am going to measure him and just buy selection of random tops.

Agreed. Having to buy clothes for an independent adult.. How thoroughly odd.
CheshireCats · 12/04/2022 22:52

I agree with pp. My first thought on reading the title was Why are you concerning yourself with this?
If he can hold down a job in academia, he can manage to buy his own clothes. Stay out of it, and let him deal with the problem himself.

Krabby · 12/04/2022 23:02

Agree with pps, this is for him to sort out, he's not a child and you're not his mother.

Electricfireplace · 12/04/2022 23:31

Agree with above, can't believe he can't sort out his work clothes himself, so what's the difference here?
He can't be bothered ovbs, it's just not a priority. Let him crack on with his see-through trou!
