Help needed buying prom dress online

I admit I’m more a wellies and gardening gloves person than fashion so I need the advice of you knowledgeable souls!

Daughter, 16, needs a prom dress. Ideally through online shopping as I have mobility issues so trawling around the shops is hard going for me and the local prom shops won’t let the girls try on dresses without a parent present.

So many of the online shops seem to come from Hong Kong with a fair number of dodgy reviews about delivery times. Have any of you got experience or recommendations for good quality sites to use?

Top of budget is £200.

Thanks for any advice you can give me - after the two lads (one didn’t go to prom, the other borrowed a mate’s suit) I am in strange new waters.

How tall is she, and what is her shape ? What styles does she tend to like ?

DaleTrimont · 12/04/2022 16:41

Oh and colours

Joolsin · 12/04/2022 16:48

My daughter got hers from JJs house, it is one of those overseas places, and this was 9 years ago, but it came in good time, fitted her perfectly (we had to put in her measurements when ordering) and you could filter by style, length, colour, neckline and so on so choice was really good. Also was a very reasonable price.

Ask her to find out where her friends are going / what online shops they are using.
Asos often has some great stuff - I was surprised!

@DaleTrimont

She’s around 5’3”, 5’4”.

Dark hair and eyes, fair (very classic English) complexion. Not overweight but more curvy than willowy. Loves greens, quite likes dusty blue shades.

Looks great in red but “that’s so extra, no way.”

Wants a full length dress, strappy, v neck or sweetheart.

This is one of the sort of thing she likes www.jjshouse.co.uk/A-Line-V-Neck-Floor-Length-Satin-Prom-Dresses-018268687-g268687#/

Haven't ordered from them myself, but I always think the dresses on here look lovely.

Your son who did not go had the right idea, I applaud him. I would like to see an end to all school proms, heteronormative events and unfair to those on a low income.

Sorry to read that you have mobility issues though.

I was looking at these earlier (no idea why, absolutely not in need of a dress!) and thought there were some lovely ones, really nice colours and pretty good price wise. They're under the bridesmaid section but some of them would definitely work for a prom.

How about a bridal section on an online shop like Next, John Lewis or ASOS.

Here's a link to ASOS, some lovely occasion dresses on there

Apparently that's the cardinal sin - a prom dress that's really a bridesmaid dress. I gather it's bougie (Christ, it's a minefield!) to do so.
Nieces and goddaughter confirm.

I have been suitably chastened.

Have a look on Silkfred. They have beautiful dresses (amongst other things) and quality is amazing.

Lovetoridemybicycle · 12/04/2022 19:56

My daughter's came from Vinted via JJ's house. There are lots brand new unworn due to the sad cancellation of proms three last couple of years.

DeckTheHallsWithGin · 12/04/2022 20:57

DDs was from Etsy from a US bridal shop- made bespoke for her measurements for £155 and she loves it. Floor length, five layers of fabric in the skirt.

curlycat · 13/04/2022 06:39

Have a look at Club L London.
DD and her friends buy all their occasion dresses from there and not expensive at all but decent quality

JoeMaplin · 13/04/2022 07:41

My daughters was from chi chi London. It was true to size and looked lovely - it was red.

skippy67 · 13/04/2022 07:47

My dd got hers from Asos.

Lemonsole · 13/04/2022 07:51

We got one from JJ's House last year. It was great: cheap, arrived when it said it would, and looked like it did on line. Obviously, a £40 dress isn't going to have the finesse of a £200 dress, but for a 16 year old at a glammed up school disco, who didn't feel comfortable about the whole thing, it ticked the boxes. We had to get it shortened professionally but it was true to size.

Lemonsole · 13/04/2022 07:54

@SpiderVersed Here is our dress. It was closer to burgundy than red, but looked lovely.

That’s a gorgeous dress! Thanks for the reassurance about JJ’s house - there were some crappy reviews on Trustpilot saying stuff arrived far too late so I was concerned.

I think that the floatier fabrics are a safer bet than satin on a cheap dress. Satin is very unforgiving if not a perfect fit.

Melissa412 · 24/06/2022 17:09

My daughter got a lovely dress from www.missbliss.uk. Mine was 11 at the time. they may have your daughters size
