Summer dresses for small boobs, fat tummy?

MrsMingech · 12/04/2022 13:42

I was hoping to lose a stone by the summer but I don't think it's going to happen thanks to exam/work/essay stress which is being fuelled by coffee and wine.

So until that ends (June, urgh) I need to know how to dress my chubby new shape.

I have non-existent boobs and a fat tummy.

When I Google it, it gives dresses like these that are gathered under the boobs, those shapes make me look pregnant because I have a sticky out tummy and no boobies.

Can anyone help?

Thank you!

I used to have this shape - tummy stuck out further than boobs. I used to buy the Boden Amelie dress, as it skimmed over my tummy, but I really sympathise on the shopping front, I used to find it a hard shape to dress.

Heavyweight jersey that didn’t cling was flattering.

I have a dress from phase eight many moons ago which was also ideal. I will try and find something similar.

WellTidy · 12/04/2022 19:41

Do you like this?

Swing dresses would also be flattering.

WellTidy · 12/04/2022 19:43

Or this?

WellTidy · 12/04/2022 20:26

This is the kind of dress that I found flattering. I have something v similar from phase eight. I don’t know how to describe it so that you could search this kind of style out, sorry.

This is my shape. It's not easy. I wear loose clothes, loose dresses in a kind of cos/scandi style or tiered dresses (hush, baukjen, me&em). If not dresses I wear high rise jeans to hold in tummy and either a long loose top (hush), or a boxy top so the structured shape of the top stands away from the body hiding the tummy. I find anything belted or coming in at the waist just accentuates the tummy. I try to make the most of my collarbones, arms and lower legs I suppose.

MrsMingech · 13/04/2022 10:17

That's really helpful.

I love the Biden Amelie dress and the cos style dress.

I'm off on a hunt, thanks for the suggestions! Flowers

I am this shape too, and I am doing the exact opposite of what you are doing:) Loose dresses make me look even larger in the tummy. I need something cinched or nipped in at waist but not clingy.

Scandi style looks awful on me, sadly.

A couple of years ago White Stuff did a cotton textured sweater that sort of twisted in the centre at the bottom. It sounds as if it would attract attention to your tummy, but it really doesn’t, it works. I’ve looked and they don’t have it at the moment, but it may be worth keeping an eye out for this style.

So something like the picture I put in my second post? Or different?

Sorry just saw your other post so maybe the one I suggested isn't really what you're looking for.

JanisMoplin · 13/04/2022 10:37

Something like this. www.next.co.uk/style/st812139/t07459?dp=a&gclid=CjwKCAjw6dmSBhBkEiwA_W-EoDggHrv8yodLxEVgF2AUWVSVWc_5mgroeBhGxuPtY_fPou4t2GHMvBoCLK8QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#t07459 I bought some nice dresses from Next last summer with shirred or drawstring waists.

But honestly I have to try on and send back a lot of stuff. My tummy is all menopausal weight so relatively new, and I am still figuring it out.

AllotmentTime · 13/04/2022 10:56

I have this shape, I bloody hate it. I have a wardrobe full of push-up padded bras to try and balance me out a bit and avoid the pregnant look.

Cowl necklines work best on me, and some kind of detail at the waist, some kind of pattern that breaks up the shape. Plain dresses are unforgiving!

thesnaleandthewhail · 13/04/2022 11:27
😯 I could have worn that when I was 19 but certainly not at 40!! Good luck to you, I can see how it would skim over a tum
WellTidy · 13/04/2022 11:31

The Urban Outfitters dress is a perfect shape. Gutted that it is so short, even the model is only 5 foot 4. I’m 5 foot 1 and it would be too short for my very lumpy thighs.

I'm 4'11 and it's a couple inches above my knee - it might be ok for you?
WellTidy · 13/04/2022 13:29

Thanks @Maisa45 but my legs are lumpy and bumpy pretty much from the knee up. Knee length all the way for me, really. Which isn’t usually a problem at 5 foot 1 as minis tend to normally be that length in me!

shinynewapple22 · 13/04/2022 16:36

This is my body shape - I would wear the Phase 8 dresses suggested by WellTidy but the style suggested by JanisMoplin would look just awful on me. I wonder if it depends on whether you are long or short-waisted? I find that a dress which has a drawstring or elastic at the waist just makes me look like a sack of spuds. A slightly A line shape is perfect on me .

I would have looked good in the urban outfitters dress 20 years ago when I was pear shaped without the huge belly.

Ahm987 · 13/04/2022 20:47

I have this shape and have found that it helps to wear something that is elasticated round the waist, but then flows down from there, without being too tight. The Hush Kensington dress is an example- I have worn and worn my summer version. Or a button down elasticated midi skirt with a boxy, tucked in t-shirt.

I fully sympathise- I hate the fact my tummy sticks out more than my boobs!

MrsMingech · 13/04/2022 22:59

The Hush Kensington dress looks very comfy!

I have one of these Phase Eight Penele dresses in a different colour. Does hide the tummy pretty well.

I wore a very similar loose Nobody's Child dress recently and it looked ok IRL but horrible in the photos. I looked like an ambulatory sofa and I am only a size 12. Am still figuring dresses out tbh as never used to wear them much.

kimfox · 14/04/2022 11:30

I have a big tummy and big boobs also. Sadly as I do find it hard to dress well being this shape & it's not the shape I had for most of my life which makes it even harder to know what to wear. Anyway boob sizes aside I think skirt and top combos are often more flattering and fit better. I'm also quite tall so find the waist on dresses is often too high - and accentuate the tummy.

Echobelly · 14/04/2022 11:39

Always been this shape and its got even worse as I've put on an extra stone recently, so watching with interest.

I have decent legs so I find dresses with a slightly high waistline and flared skirt work well. I have a lovely old Boden dress in that shape but it's getting a bit worn out now. And yes anything gathered under the bust makes me look pregnant. But totally a-line dresses can work as well.
