Getting wavy hair

How do you do it? I have never been able to master it! My hair is curly but I usually straighten it. I’ve tried lots of techniques but nothing looks good on my mid length hair.

Can you do waves with the straighteners ?

If your hair does have a natural wave/ curl, putting on a bit of curl creme and 'plopping' is a really nice and easy start.
Really wet hair, cream and brushed
Lay a cotton t-shirt on your bed, straight end to the top, neck at the bottom. Lower your hair into the middle.
Pull the straight edge up to the nape of your neck, and the neck hole to your forehead, so your hair is cupped in it. Tie the sleeves round to hold it in place.
Sit and read in peace for a while so it dries a little, as long as possible really. Undo and you should find some natural curls going on 😊

I’ve never mastered the art of doing it with straighteners and mine are too wide. Could buy some thinner ones but I’m not convinced I’ve got the skill to do it.

My hair is tight ringlets right up to the root. Frizzy horrible ringlets. I don’t think plopping would work if I want lovely soft waves would it?

My hair is naturally curly too. I've just realised that it goes into looser waves if i brush it through when wet then leave to dry naturally. It seems to loosen the curls. I put serum on it first to stop it getting frizzy.

Im curly, too. But my curls drop out and are mostly fizzy.
To be honest I don't think you can alter the natural shape of hair without heat. It simply won't happen, no matter how much gunk you throw on it.

What I have found though is that you can eradicate curl by brushing into a sleek, flat, low pony when wet. Then softly twist the lengths of the pony and grip at bottom with a clip. Hair will take a while to dry like that but won't curl.
Sadly doing this when wet causes breakage.

Another way is to blow dry on a low.med heat whilst gently combing through. When dry, if you are like me, your hair will be voluminous and frizzy! But once dry put into a soft twist up the back of head or tow twists at side (like braids but not plaited as this will create too many kinks) for an hour. Loose waves ought to settle when undone.

Key to this is a good leave in conditioner or whatever cream/oil suits your hair to combat frizz.

I've got a Toni and Guy thing that's just a MASSIVE crimped that does good waves.

I will also admit that I cant relate to curly girl. Not only does it infantilise women, but it made my hair look like the fibrous carcass of a dead dog.

I actually prefer the 'before' pics on curly girl sites, the original curls had so much natural volume and looked very pre-raphaelite or just soft and pretty. After the curly girl method hair looks more like worms to me, over coiffed and really unnatural. However, obviously many people love it that way, we are all different. I guess I am saying that as a curly I can ouch that CG is NOT sacrosanct.

I quite like the waves you get when you comb out wet hair, plait it (one either side of your head) until dry and then unplait with some curl cream
