I need some short hair cut direction please...

I've been considering a proper short hair cut for a (very) long time now, but I am not sure exactly what to go for. Here are my requirements/constiderations:

I'm lucky that my hair dries straight naturally, so I spend 0% of my current time drying or anything really. I might straighten it once in a blue moon to make it neater. So I don't want to go to something that takes any a lot of time and faff.

I want to go really short, not a bob this time. I'd like to avoid looking like my mum with just a short almost bob thing. Grin I guess talking pixie/crop of some sort.

So I guess I am looking for something that will sit ok with or without a bit of product and a quick brush/scrunch up?

I don't care really whether it suits my age/face, just that it's out of the way and not too much hassle. :)

I won't be getting any colour/highlights. I am lucky to not have any grey appearing yet, but I don't want to dye it even when it does. A lot of the google searches are for 2 tone effects etc with colour. Currently mid-brown, shoulder length ish and in pretty good condition.

I do accept that I will need to get a hair cut a lot more often, but I'm hoping it'll be worth it. 😬

Did you get it cut OP?

Galvantula · 13/07/2022 03:43

I did not. Not had any sort of cut at all though, so still thinking about a short cut.

Forgot about this thread, thanks for asking 😄

I have short hair - my best advice is find a really good hairdresser, you need someone who is skilled with short hair and takes your maintenance requirements into account. Ask around, if you see women with styles that you like in your local area, ask them who cuts their hair.

EspeciallyDeIighted · 13/07/2022 06:53

I had short hair for years - my hairdresser and I used to tweak the style all the time but the one thing I did find was that it always needed daily washing and blowdrying to look good. But both were very quick. Whereas with shoulder length or longer I can leave it to dry naturally and only wash it twice a week which is just as well as it takes ages to blowdry properly.

GreenManalishi · 13/07/2022 07:03

As previous poster, short hair sticks up every which way in the morning so does need washing and blow-drying before you leave the house every day, and weeks four to six it looks like it needs another cut. Find a hairdresser you like through recommend and take advice on not only face shape but head shape. Hairdressing spend will go through the roof, prepare to get very acquainted! I'd research it, think about it, sleep on it again and again because the growing it back out awkward stage is loong! 😊

hugoagogo · 13/07/2022 07:09

I have had short hair almost all my adult life and never washed and blow dried it in the mornings. My hair sounds similar to yours, dead straight and fine, dries quickly by itself.
If it was sticking up in the morning, I used to just wet it down a bit and combed it into place.

Shakeitshakeitbaby · 13/07/2022 07:13

My hair is straight and fine, but there is lots of it. I have a crop similar to what Michelle Williams had when it was at it's shortest. I love it, do very little with it. Have never blow dried it.

Minimalme · 13/07/2022 07:21

I have a no.1 on the side and back and wear my very curly hair in the sort of quiff on the top.

I really love how Pink has her hair and have gone for the curly version of that.

I absolutely love it!

Just go for something radical - if you don't like it, it will grow back. I went through some very dodgy styles to find one that suited me.

FinallyHere · 13/07/2022 07:24

On my hair, this only happens if it is cut 'too short'. Take a picture and show your hairdresser so she knows for next time.

Short hair definitely doesn't have to be like this.

Galvantula · 13/07/2022 07:53

There's 0% chance of me blow drying it (ever really never mind every day), but I'm a shower and wash hair every morning kind of person anyway.

Thanks all and thanks @Smurftastic for reviving my poor dead thread 😄

I have very short hair. I just stick my head under the tap if it’s sticking up. Don’t brush it or dry it or anything. Give it a ruffle and off I go. I enjoy having short hair, but would agree it needs a hairdresser who knows what they are doing.

ShirleyJackson · 13/07/2022 08:15

After years and years I finally found a hairdresser who specialises in short hair and I’ve never looked back. It’s massively liberating.

I have something like this. I really think when it comes to short hair, you have to be really gung ho to avoid the ‘regional newsreader’ look.

I’m not sure why I posted that twice. But you get the idea.

I've had short hair for years. I do have to wash and dry it every day, but it takes minutes (and isn't a short hair thing, I could never get away without properly drying it when it was longer either).

A hairdresser who understands how your hair behaves is the key. Mine is fab. She knows I get bored easily, so she tweaks the cut/style to mix things up a bit. But she can only do that because she knows the peculiarities of my hair (very fine, but loads of it, prone to bulk in certain places). She also knows the level of maintenance I'm prepared to do (ie very little), so wouldn't do a cut that needed loads of faffing.

I'd say go for it, and try a shorter style. Maybe keep a bit of the length on top, to begin with, but the old adage is true- it's hair, it will grow back!

Divebar2021 · 13/07/2022 08:27

I had my hair cut short 6 months ago and looked for a salon that would be good but not expensive. ( the salon charges men and women the same for short cuts). Unfortunately my particular stylist was not great and I ended up going back to a previous stylist who is fantastic but expensive. A lot of younger stylists haven’t got the technical skills to do cool short cuts because long hair and colour have been the emphasis for so long. I started out with hair like Vicky McLure ( spelling??) but have gone a bit shorter and sharper. I’ve never had it stick up but I do need to use straighteners because I have a slight wave in my hair but overall it’s much less effort on a daily basis. It changes how my clothes look though.

HouseofHolbein · 13/07/2022 08:28

I went for a grade 2 in lockdown 1. Bloody love it. Husband runs the clippers over it when it starts to stick up. Never going back 😊

Athenajm80 · 13/07/2022 08:34

I had a kind of pixie cut years ago. My hair is very fine but it was so easy to take care of. I did use to shave the sides myself to cut down on costs, although couldn't do the fade very well but it looked ok. Every now and again, I'd grow it out into a longer pixie cut (4-5 inches long maybe) and then would go back to the hairdresser when I could afford it. I loved it.

The only issue in my opinion was growing it out as a pp said. I chose to grow it cause I wanted to be able to do more with my hair, although after this thread, I am very tempted to cut it all off again. It's below shoulder length now but just so blah, especially cause it's so straight and fine. I wonder where my clippers are....

Coniferhedge · 13/07/2022 08:37

Mine is like this picture - an undercut pixie. To be honest, I don’t find I need to make that many hairdresser trips. I do the undercut myself (pin the top hair up, and run the clippers on a number 2 setting over the sides with DH doing the back for me). Then maybe about every three months I go to the hairdresser to tidy the top up. As for styling, like OP I wash it every morning in the shower, quick blast with the hairdryer, run a bit of wax through it to give it a bit of texture and it’s done. I love it, but then I’ve never been one for spending hours on my hair. It takes about five minutes, maximum. I’m actually thinking of clipping the whole lot off, but I don’t know if I’m brave enough!

My short haircut grew out over lockdown so I’ve been experimenting with various bob styles. Went back to short short a few weeks back and although I enjoyed the experimenting, I finally feel like myself again!

Getting mine chopped at the weekend and might steal this one. Love the idea of maintaining the undercut myself and just getting the top snipped every few months. Thanks @Coniferhedge !!!

Coniferhedge · 13/07/2022 20:17

@FrankGrillosFloof Honestly, it’s the easiest cut, you don’t actually need an extra person to clip the back, just keep your hand at the line where your undercut meets your longer hair and bump the clippers up to it. I just get DH to check for any missed patches!

ClemmyTine · 13/07/2022 20:40

Look at photos of Ellen Degeneres. Her hair looks good.

crispsandwichplease · 13/07/2022 21:11

Google image search Vicky McClure! Lots of lovely options

Athenajm80 · 13/07/2022 23:55

@Coniferhedge I have those pics saved from when I used to go to the hairdresser. The model looks amazing. Sadly, the hairdresser never made me look that good but then again, she's not a cosmetic surgeon!

On the back of this thread, straight after posting, I went upstairs and cut at least 3 inches off my hair. I think I am going to go back short on the weekend. You've all made me miss my short hair.

Coniferhedge · 14/07/2022 15:34

Anybody considering g a pixie, I’d recommend having a look at Pixie Chick or Sali Rasa on YouTube. They both do good tutorials on how to style and dress up pixie cuts in different ways.
