Where to buy maternity clothes

Last time I was pregnant I went to a big mothercare, tried on loads of stuff and was able to get everything I needed in one trip. Mothercare is sadly no more, and jojo Maman is not really my style. I don't really get on with online shopping, but could go anywhere in London. Ideally not too expensive, lots of pregnancy basics (jeans, tights etc) and able to try everything on.

Does anywhere like this exist?

Last time I was in H&M they seemed to have a reasonable sized maternity section.

namechangeanonymous · 10/04/2022 11:18

Know in my local city H and M no longer have their maternity section. I've hardly brought anything during pregnancy this far as I can't find anything and I can't be bothered with the never ending circle of ordering and returning.

yorkshireteaspoonie · 10/04/2022 11:54

There's literally nothing on the high street. Maybe a small section in the back of a shop somewhere but they just don't hold it in store. Even in flagship stores I've struggled.

New look do the best maternity jeans and softest PJ's (or try Chelsea peers) but even they can be bought online at ASOS which has the biggest selection and the quickest delivery and easiest returns.

I didn't do any maternity wear apart from a few pairs of leggings from h&m. Just bought floatier, more oversized clothes I already like in bigger sizes and I still wear them.

Borgonzola · 10/04/2022 12:01

This is something I've moaned about elsewhere.

My large town shopping centre has a Next, H&M, Zara, M&S, John Lewis, New Look, etc. only the H&M has a maternity section, and it is consists of multipack T-shirts in black/white/grey, ditto nursing vests, and leggings. Nothing I'd actually want to wear publicly.

I've been reduced to TU Sainsburys (I actually liked them before I was pregnant, luckily), but the section has been reduced in size to allow for the vast swimming costumes /floppy hats/ sarongs / kaftans needed by retirees for this year's cruise.

I've got a few nice simple dresses from asos, but they also do veer towards the multipack of boring T-shirts, and all their models and terrifyingly tall and thin with a fake football-shaped bump stuck up their shirt.

There is quite literally nothing normal. I also looked for some nice soft shirts that I could buy in a size 20 or something, and continue wearing to feed afterwards, but there was cock all!

I'm sick to death of it! All I have now is Instagram advertising me Seraphine clothing, which is lovely but fuck me if I'm paying £40 for one Breton top Grin

Sunshinegirl82 · 10/04/2022 16:27

Seraphine have some shops in London, their stuff is not mega cheap but quite nice.

Some H&M's have a small section.

Another option is to buy everything you think you might like to click and collect, go in and pick it all up, do a big try on session in store and then immediately return anything you don't like. I did that with New Look.

Sunshinegirl82 · 10/04/2022 16:31

Oh and Asda! Best maternity leggings I ever found were from Asda, 2 for £12. Can click and collect there too.

Pyri · 10/04/2022 16:32

The great thing about big baggy dresses being in fashion is they’re perfect for wearing during pregnancy and beyond!

I got some great leggings from M&S but that’s about it. Primark standard vests are stretchy enough too

Dumbledoressister · 10/04/2022 16:34

Definitely ebay!

IEatChocolateForBreakfast · 10/04/2022 17:05

Check eBay and Vinted. Last time I was pregnant I spent a bomb on Seraphine clothing. It's lovely, and wore very well. I sold it all for a very good value on Vinted. Buyer got a great deal and I got a decent amount of money back from sales

blossomkil · 10/04/2022 17:34

Thank you all! Best bet seems to be H&M, new look and sainsburys. Internet says H&M and new look Stratford stores have a maternity section so will start there and resort to click and collect if no luck.

I like new look. And H&M

Kdubs1981 · 10/04/2022 19:13

Unfortunately a lot of shops carry most of their stuff online rather than in store, which is annoying

CurbsideProphet · 10/04/2022 22:14

I've been looking on Vinted and there is so much for sale in nearly new condition from all brands. I would have to buy online anyway, so I'm trying Vinted first.

TokenGinger · 10/04/2022 22:27

H&M was great for tops for me, but their jeans cut in a really uncomfortable position just above my foof.

Matalan was best for jeans.

TokenGinger · 10/04/2022 22:28

Tights, I got XXL from Primark.

And dresses for work from Boohoo! Surprisingly. It's not somewhere I'd usually shop but I liked their maternity dress range.

peanutbuttertoasty · 10/04/2022 22:58

Seraphine and Isabella Oliver

blossomkil · 12/04/2022 17:20

Updates in case anyone is also asking:

Went to Stratford Westfield, H&M had a small but ok selection - managed to get some skinny jeans and jeggings - had some tights and vests too. Had a terrible new self service system but that's another rant. New Look had a few pairs of jeans that looked really cheap and scruffy. Nowhere else in Westfield did maternity.

I think I'm going to have to learn to like online shopping.

I wore mostly Seraphine over bump jeans and knot front dresses, but I bought almost all of them on eBay.

AdriannaP · 13/04/2022 08:58

Sorry most maternity stuff is online now. I found Gap great too and they often have a sale. Also Asos and as others said Seraphine. Don’t spend too much, it’s only a few months.

AdriannaP · 13/04/2022 09:00

Isabella Oliver is also nice, but more pricy.

stimpyyouidiot · 13/04/2022 09:02

Hardly anywhere to actually physically see maternity clothes. And the thing that really pisses me off is that most websites have a thin, tall model, with a fake bump on. It's just so unrealistic.

I'm basically living in leggings and T-shirts!
