Frizzy hair

Nik2879 · 08/04/2022 22:54

Im well aware this is first world problems but it gets me so down. I hate my hair, its so frizzy and straw like. Used lots of different products over the years nothing seems to help. As its so frizzy I have to use lots of hairspray and hair mousse to tame it and keep it down. Which in turn makes my hair look shiny and greasy which I hate but if I didnt do that it would look like a birds nest and be wild. I see so make women and nobody's hair looks like mine they all look like they have no hairspray in at all and still stay nice in a pony. The only time my hair looks even half way normal and not as frizzy is when I go the hairdressers and have a blow dry which I cant afford to do very often. Anyone got hair like mine and have any tips? I hate every photo of me cos my hair looks like its stuck to my head with all the product in. Help a frizzy haired girl out please any advice ok what I can do to make it look better.

I’m going to be no use at all. I had massively frizzy hair and I hated it. First lockdown i took the clippers to it and have kept it at a grade 2/3 ever since. Happiest I have ever been with my hair.

MrOllivander · 08/04/2022 23:01

Is it curly or wavy? Could do with a pic really to see the texture (a cropped one!)

Nik2879 · 08/04/2022 23:05

If I leave it to dry its wavy but normally straighten it only about 3 times a week to try and tame it. (have gone times where I didnt staighten it at all but the waves and frizzy look even worse)

I have similar and am finding a good dollop of Aveda botanical repair before drying really helps. I’ve tried countless products. It’s expensive though

Mercurial123 · 09/04/2022 07:24

L'Oréal Steampod solved all my frizzy hair problems.

gunnersgold · 09/04/2022 07:34

It's probably curly , have you tried using product and disgusting?
My hair is super curly but left o it's own devices and dried naturally it's disgusting. !

GeneLovesJezebel · 09/04/2022 07:36

Do you use a heat protecting product before you straighten ?

Nik2879 · 09/04/2022 09:40

My daughter has a tendency to frizz. Leave in conditioner and lose plait if drying naturally really helps and is a cheap solution.
Silk pillows supposed to be very good.

evilharpy · 09/04/2022 11:53

I have the same problem. If I leave it to dry naturally it dries very frizzy. I straighten it but struggle to keep it in good condition. A Brazilian blow dry works well but only really lasts a few weeks.

FunnyTalks · 09/04/2022 12:08

I have insane, very coarse frizz. Always have since childhood. I have never been able to just wash and brush it and it look OK. What I never understood (because my mother never understood her own hair and because hairdressers just use straighteners) was that frizz is just wavy or curly hair that has lost its clump. I really recommend curly girl method. It takes ages to fine tune the method to your own hair type (eg whether it is coarse or fine and how porous it is) but it is really worth it. I now find it much easier than straightening.

THisbackwithavengeance · 09/04/2022 12:19

My hair used to be lovely and ringlet-y when I was young but as I have descended into middle age it has become frizzy, dry, strawlike and shit. So I sympathise. I have long, thick, dense hair so I cannot manage it myself.

What I do now is go to the hairdresser about 2 or 3 times a fortnight and have my hair professionally blow dried and set.

I go to a local hairdresser college and it costs about £7-£10 each time and because I am a regular I often asked to come in so such and such a student can practice on my hair so sometimes it's free. This means that my hair is generally straight and manageable and can be worn in a swishy ponytail or bun as opposed to a mop of frizz on my head.

Kebelo in-salon smoothing treatment is excellent for frizz and lasts for ages.

Nik2879 · 09/04/2022 17:03

Thanks everyone some good tips. Not heard of kebelo smoothing treatment will find out about it. Thank you.

How does curly girl method not leave it vaguely wet-looking?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/04/2022 18:00

Olaplex 3 once a week and use L'Oréal extraordinary oil after washing and before styling.

Allthestarsabovemyhead · 09/04/2022 18:02

I agree with the other poster about it being curly. My hair has always been frizzy. I used curl products and ‘plopped’ my hair. I was amazed that I had curls/waves.

FunnyTalks · 09/04/2022 18:30

@ClaudiusTheGod

How does curly girl method not leave it vaguely wet-looking?
The gel you use sets in a hard cast to allow the hair to dry with the curls /waves in clumps. But, unlike 80s style wet look gels, when totally dry you scrunch or clap your hair and the hardness and wet look disappears, leaving the hair with defined curls /waves.

I got this recently and have been really pleased as makes my hair look so much better.

I agree with PP, it's likely just really damaged curly hair. Since embracing the curls, my frizzy hair has been orders of magnitude better!

23Elfie · 09/04/2022 21:28

If you can afford it, a Brazilian blow dry is just amazing! My hair is wavy and horrendously frizzy, I either tie it up and have this frizzy Bush on the back of my head or straighten it to death.

Friend of a friend does Brazilian blow dries, it cost £70 and you can't wash your hair for three days after you've had it done but WOW. It makes such a difference! I can just wash and dry it off (no special techniques literally just buzz it dry) and off I go. It's a lot of money but soooo worth it! Lasts around 3 months for me x

Nik2879 · 09/04/2022 23:39

I was looking into a Brazilian blow dry but been looking at the Steam pod straighter was recommended it looks fab so might buy one of those.

You could try an at-home keratin/Brazilian treatment. I've done it myself and just to warn you, you'll need about half a day and a lot of patience, but the results were good! A beauty site I was reading yesterday recommended GK HAIR Global Keratin (~£90 on Amazon, but multiple uses - I didn't try this one myself so can't comment on how good it is, but this seems to be recommended by a few sites).

Binkybix · 10/04/2022 01:35

If I were to brush my hair it goes into a curly frizz ball! When managed as curly hair it goes into (sometimes) lovely curls which quite often gets compliments.

I don’t use sulphate shampoo very often and try to avoid silicon conditioners (use ultimate blends), then scrunch in Umberto Giannini scrunching jelly and leave then scrunch. You could diffuse it dry if you don’t have time for the 80s dry caste stage before scrunching.

Girlintheframe · 10/04/2022 08:29

My hair used to be incredibly frizzy. I would spend forever styling it and spent a fortune on products trying to tame it.

It unfortunately got worse the older I got.

I tried the girly girl method too but had meh results.

Finally got a Kerasilk keratin treatment from my hair dresser. Absolute game changer. Had it done November last year and my hair is still frizz free.

It was expensive but I've saved a fortune in products but the main benefit is I can actually just wash my hair, leave it and it dries sleek and glossy.
