Talk to me about box dyes

My hair is naturally a mid chestnut brown which used to be lighter and gets lighter in the sun. In summer I tend to get hairdresser highlights and also do my own at home and use the Sunkiss jelly stuff. I have a lot of different tones through my hair so bleach is all I really need to get a quite natural look.

This year I'd quite like to get to an all over lighter colour before looking at highlights as the contrast can be a bit 'stripey' at the beginning. Thinking of a box dye and have bought a permanent one for dark ash blonde (as I already tend to ginger didn't want to end up too orange).

I've done box dyes before to darken my hair but never to lighten, and a bit nervous as to how it will come out. Any tips or warnings please?

They don't lighten. They only contain dye, so they cannot lighten your hair. At best you will end up with hair the same colour as now.

Ehhh? From 15 years of using a variety of dark ash blonde colours on my hair they absolutely do lighten.

Some of them tend towards the ginger no matter how much they promise they don’t.

I’m currently using Garnier 7N which works well (can lean ginger but easily taken out with a toner)

I’d be wary of creating obvious roots or a band where new hair growth meets dark ash blonde meets natural summer highlights.

I dye my hair blonde with a box. My hair is dark brown usually. I use the nice and easy lightest one. It looks very good and couldn't be easier.

Well, have you tried it yet?
