Capsule Cornwall

Onthetrain75 · 07/04/2022 12:02

Have been going to Cornwall every year for last 12 years and have never nailed the capsule wardrobe.
I have 2 very active preteens so need stuff to walk/cycle but then also mooch and go out for dinner in evenings. Mostly I struggle with the unpredictable weather as really I never know whether it will be bitterly cold or sunny until we are there…

Any tips? Am 47 but not really a SeaSalt kind of woman (sorry). Would just like to look good and not take too much stuff. Is that even possible?!!

We go to Cornwall most years and we had a caravan until last year so limited space.

I always take plain short boden shorts. Whistles dresses, racer back vests. Sweaty Betty fleece. Havianas, converse. Pale grey jeans.

And that's pretty much it. Rotate according to the weather.

It took years to realise everyone dresses down in cornwall and to stop 'dressing up' to go out at night. And that it's OK to wear a fleece over a nice dress.

crackofdoom · 07/04/2022 12:18

If you want to blend in with the locals a fleece with wolves on from Pool Market is a must. Another strong look is a boiler suit held up with baler twine.

Oh........tourists never blend in with the locals. Nice remark. I'm 'local' and I am wearing Prada boots and a MaxMara coat.
crackofdoom · 07/04/2022 12:38

venus7 snap. I'm local too.

I also have a sense of humour....🙄

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 07/04/2022 12:42

From my experience, all you need is a pair of long denim shorts, and a series of stripy breton tops to go with them.

Me too; we missed each others attempts!

In my local opinion - No.

Aliceforgot · 07/04/2022 15:26

I don't go to Cornwall but would love to nail the Cornwall wardrobe Smile

Newgirls · 07/04/2022 15:32

I challenge you not to wear stripes - it’s like a uniform!

RosesAndHellebores · 07/04/2022 15:32

Isn't it the SW London yummy mummy wardrobe with shorts - usually enhanced with blonde highlights, sunglasses perched on the head, sparkly rings and an assortment of Bisto kids called Hector, Olympia and Arthur?

BastardtheCat · 07/04/2022 15:34

Shit. I went to Cornwall with F&F and Primark 😨

My walking boots were Northface though. And genuinely wrecked.

That ok?

crackofdoom · 07/04/2022 17:33

It's OK, Bastard. I'm currently sitting IN Cornwall wearing George d'ASDA yoga pants.

LaPampa · 08/04/2022 00:48

I would wear what you usually wear at home but with more outdoor type footwear if you're going to be walking on a beach / getting on a boat/ferry etc. Even in the fanciest restaurants here casual /jeans are fine although people dress up too. Basically we all still live normal lives here and dress accordingly.

If you're going to be doing active stuff like walking the coast path or riding bikes wear your usual active gear.

Depends where you're going but most people either wear "normal" stuff like trainers or if you are on the more hipster end of things Blundstone or DM Chelsea boots.

You'll probably need a waterproof coat. Don't bother with an umbrella.

GeodesicDome · 08/04/2022 00:56

Cornwall's just another bit of the UK Confused

What would you wear to Guildford, or Wrexham, or Thanet? Wear that.

mrssmiling · 08/04/2022 07:14

Some good advice already - second what LaPampa says. Take t-shirts and thin wool jumpers to layer, as well as thicker tops. I managed to reduce packing by letting go of the idea of ‘evening’ clothes. I used to pack a skirt or two, or smart top which often came back unworn! I now just take a few scarves to wear, which make me feel slightly dressed up, but take up very little space.
www.joedwardsretail.co.uk/ Not cheap, but some lovely scarves!

Grin don’t forget your wellies. Cornwall farmers for a good fit.
TabithaTittlemouse · 08/04/2022 08:56

How did I forget bleddy Trago!

LaPampa · 08/04/2022 10:21

If you want to blend in with the locals (whatever that means!) don't wear your "holiday wardrobe".

Lotsofthings · 08/04/2022 18:13

Finsterre, is the look. With extra kudos for being Cornish brand.

intwrferingma · 08/04/2022 19:09

A Finisterre down (well recycled plastic) jacket is a must. Practically part of the uniform.
Today I (a local) wore a Breton with said jacket and jeans.

BastardtheCat · 08/04/2022 20:09

I saw some lovely linen tunics in Cornwall years back - not pretty as such like Seasalt, but more functional and sturdy. Don't suppose anyone knows the brand?!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 08/04/2022 20:22

Bloody hell, I live in Cornwall and I can tell what the weather's doing from one minute to the next never mind a week in advance!

In fact, today it's been sunny and bitterly cold, if that helps?

I wear a variation of jeans, t-shirt, vest top, knitted jumper/fleece, trainers / leather boots all year round. Might break out the flip-flops and shorts / cotton dresses if it gets properly hot.

School run I see white trainers / leather boots / Dr Martens. Jeans (usually skinny) or leggings. Black trousers cut like skinny jeans. T shirts / off and cold shoulder tops / tunics / crop tops, jumpers in various types of knit, puffer jackets mostly long but some hip length. In summer there were denim shorts and dungarees style above the knee dresses.

This might be a bit too seasalt? Nice quality though. www.nomadsclothing.com/womenswear/tunics

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 08/04/2022 20:38

Sure it wasn't seasalt Bastard? They do plain linen ones that are quite nice, in a few styles.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/04/2022 21:20

I’ve been going to Cornwall for years. I just take jeans ( 3 pairs) which will roll up, 2 pairs shirts, t shirts, 2 hoodies and 2 zip hoodies. Waterproof coat, Birkies, flip flops and trainers ( and trainer socks). What else is there? I probably take one dress in case it’s hot. But I’ve been going for 10 years and it’s never been hot enough…
