Little hacks/cuts and dry skin around my fingernails so very painful - help?

I’ve been getting gel on my nails since before Christmas and I noticed that sometimes afterwards the skin around my nails would be red and sore afterwards. The last time I had then done 3 weeks ago has been a disaster, the skin around every finger has peeled and been really sore, I now have little cuts under my nails on at least 4 fingers and they keep opening up and bleeding. They throb and sting and are just a pain. I have been moisturising loads and staying away from hand sanitizer but having painful fingers for 3 weeks is annoying

Lansinoh. It might be called something different now. Comes in a yellow tube. It's very thick, purified lanolin. I got a tube from Waitrose I think.

Sudocream works wonders as well

Is the technician cutting your cuticles? This happened to me and I asked her to stop and just push them back instead. Since then I had no problems.

Flexitol has a cuticle and nail cream specifically for sore / damaged skin around nails. It's usually £5.99 ish and a little goes a long way.

This was the day after I had my nails done and you can already see my fingers were red and sore they’ve never recovered. All the skin around the nails kept flaking and then I got the little cuts which don’t seem to heal.

Someone suggested I’m allergic to the polish but I can’t soak it off it would be agony. I don’t have any sudocrem or lansinoh in the house days for them are long gone I’ll have to go to Boots.

You'll think I am daft, but-nail glue.
Glue the worst bits together, it'll sting, but then they won't hurt so much. Then eurecin hand cream as often as you can.

Calendula cream helps a lot too

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream

I'm no doctor but that looks like a reaction. Might be worth trying some antihistamine cream.

I think once this starts you really need to remove them and take a break, it happens to me every so often after having continuous nails. I think the skin gets sensitive from the chemicals/harsh filing etc. for me I have to have a break to let them heal (with dreadful nails) and then after a couple of months start the whole process again.

Agree with this.

A family member is a keen gardener and gets a lot of little fissures in the skin on his fingers.
Didn't believe me about EA8HC, but was so impressed when he tried it that he now suggests it to patients (he's a GP) with similar problems.

Unfortunately, This happened to me and I had to stop getting my nails done. I had split skin and swollen fingers, they actually felt painful.

Pharmacist said it was a reaction to the chemicals. If you can't bear to soak it off, can you pick it off this time? It won't get better until the varnish is off.

Even now if I use normal nail varnish I have a reaction and it takes weeks for my nails to stop splitting and become strong again.

Sorry probably not what you want to hear!

sweetkitty · 06/04/2022 23:58

I’m definitely going to have a break from the gels once I can get them off.

Neals yard Wild Rose Balm is an amazingly healing balm. I had really dry, cracked, almost bleeding fingers and it sorted them out beautifully. If you don’t want to soak your fingers your can get the varnish remover and soak cotton wool balls and just put them on nail itself. If you’ve got the balm cover the skin with that before doing it
