Are Ray-ban polarised sunglasses really worth the cost?

Compared to other polarised sunglasses with a smaller price tag?
I bought some 4140s off the Ray ban website last week and while they are nice, they are a good fit for me, I'm struggling to see why they would be over £70 and that is at a heavily reduced rate. They are the ones made in Italy.

What is it that makes these any better than other polarised sunglasses of different brands that cost less? It's it purely the name you are paying for?

Further to it, what other brands can you recommend to me please? That cost less!
At the moment, the only reason I'm thinking of keeping them is that they are a good fit. Often sunglasses are too big.

Anyone got any alternative ideas please?

I love mine. I paid over £100 years ago and rely on them so much for driving. They are comfy, green tinted , so not too dark.

I'm looking at polarised glasses on amazon and wondering if they are all going to be made by the same factories...?
£20 or £70?

Amazon's so easy to return to that it's worth trying them out - I do think with Rayban's you're paying a lot for the name, though they are great glasses.

I'm too cheap for Rayban but also need a smaller frame which they're good for (I do have a cheaper non-polarised pair of kids' raybans) - my go-to brand for slimmer styles & polarised by default is Hump Optics, but they're US based. Much cheaper than Rays but if you ordered, waited ages and then didn't like them, they'd be a pain to return

I think the problem with Amazon is that you never know if they have the UV filters they say they have.

I bought some from Nomad Eyewear recently though and really like them, and for some reason I trust an independent brand with its own website more than anything from Amazon. (Not sure exactly if that's logical but there you go...) There are a few things I wouldn't want to buy cheaply and anything to do with health and electrics fall into that category.

Justkoko · 05/04/2022 18:18

How do we know any glasses have the filters they say they have?
I'm simply not sure what to do with this pair. Such a lot of money.
I've had O'Neil polarised from tkmaxx in the past, pure luck finding the right size though. But they were good, and definitely polarised compared to some super cheap ones.

Must admit those Nomad ones are nice, though how does the mirror hold up? I have cheap blue mirrored ones and they are forever marked!

I bought some and loved them though dropped them and that was the end of that - I had the glass lens ones.

But I now have the h and m polarised ones and they are great.

Beachlovingirl · 05/04/2022 21:14

Ps I have a small face and these are good for me.

Appleblum · 06/04/2022 01:25

They are worth it because they are of better quality and last longer. I boughter cheaper polarised sunglasses and they worked just as well, except the coating started peeling off after about a year and I had to replace them. Bought raybans this time around and they have lasted longer than the cheaper pair.

Mercurial123 · 06/04/2022 06:58

I've had Rayban Polarised Wayfarers for six years and yes they are definitely worth it. Their quality is excellent.

SweatyChamoisPad · 06/04/2022 07:14

I have Rayban polarised - recommended to me by my best mate of 30+ years as I do a lot of winter hill walking in the snow.

She also told me that 90% of designer sunglasses are made under licence by two manufacturers and the profit margin for the brands is enormous.

Justkoko · 06/04/2022 18:14

Well precisely @SweatyChamoisPad which is why I would love to find some which don't have this crazy mark up. I can't seriously believe these cost ten times as much to manufacture as generic ones off amazon?

Buy a cheaper pair from Amazon and compare with the Raybans?

theschitt · 06/04/2022 19:04

I wouldn't trust sunglasses from Amazon having the correct UV protection - is it really worth the gamble?
There are cheaper sunglasses from reputable shops out there, you don't have to spend too much money.

I have prescription sunglasses, my last pair were from a place in London for about £250, but they are really good quality, comfortable and I know they have all the correct protection. (Here's hoping I don't lose them!)

Dishevelled09 · 06/04/2022 19:53

I've worn Foster Grants sunglasses for years, they do a good range of polarised for about £20-30 mark. They're sold in Waitrose and Sainsbury's. I've also got a pair of O Neil's that are polarised but when I drop them (forget they are on my head)the lenses fall out but easily popped back in!

VaVaVoombangabang · 07/04/2022 05:02

You can also get Foster Grants in TKmaxx at times.

I wear polarized Ray Bans all the time and do think they are worth it, but about 15 years ago I bought a pair of Calvin Klines polarized glasses, still going strong no scratches and I think they are better than RB, however the newer updated ones are rubbish.

And yes there are only a couple of manufactures who make most of the glasses and the mark up is shocking!

JinglingHellsBells · 07/04/2022 08:38

You will never know if whatever you buy off Amazon is real or fake.

I wear sunglasses a lot for driving and as far as my eye health goes I'd rather buy the real thing, not a fake.

StCharlotte · 07/04/2022 08:43

I have RayBan polarised (Erika) and Serengeti Mara polarised, both worth the money.

But I also have a polarised pair from Boots which were £28 and I keep them in the car - just as good if not as stylish.

Roselilly36 · 07/04/2022 08:51

Polarised lens are brilliant, obviously cheaper lens are not as good quality. I have prescription polarised sunglasses they are awesome, not dark, but they cut out glare, looking at water is better as you can see through it, rather than with non polarised lens. The difference is so noticeable.

Fidgety31 · 07/04/2022 11:05

I had polarised (green tint) raybans but the lenses scratched so easily . I wasn’t good at keeping them in their case though
I only wear raybans but now I buy normal lenses instead

HugsAlwaysAvailable · 07/04/2022 15:17

I bought a pair of polarised sunglasses from Next a couple of years ago and they're still as good as new. Only problem is now I need prescription lenses for driving.

TinaWeymouthsBass · 07/04/2022 19:55

Having worn ray bans for years I noticed the quality declining a lot so swapped to Maui Jims , they are quite pricey but well worth the outlay... fabulous frames really comfortable and the lens quality Is the best I've ever worn (I wear them year round)
www.mauijim.com/GB/en_GB/

Alocasia · 08/04/2022 07:52

RayBan aren’t the best quality ever but will be a lot better than the cheaper options. I also LOVE Maui Jim for the lenses but find the quality of the frames can vary.
Polarisation and UV protection are separate issues. All sunglasses legally sold in the UK have UV protection. Personally I like to have some non-polarised sunglasses as well as polarised ones, polarised ones are a pain for looking at screens (such as my phone)

Littlebendytoe · 08/04/2022 08:47

I like the look of (but haven't bought so can't vouch for quality) of the Hygge ones. Buy one get one free most of the time.

hyggebands.com/collections/sunglasses-buy-1-get-1-free

Justkoko · 10/04/2022 08:29

That's a good point about looking at screens with polarised lenses @Alocasia
I keep seeing hyggebamds come up on adveets but don't always choose to click on random adverts or you see them forever more. Mind you, I've never clicked on it and keep seeing it anyway. Weird.

I dunno, I think £70 is just so much money. I just don't believe the materials etc cost that much and I think I'm paying for the brand name. Problem is still finding good quality that fit nice.
