Please help me with an outfit

I need an outfit for an all-day event in early October, and have no idea what to look for or where to look. But I've a few months and the Marvelous Mavens of Mumsnet to help me.

I'm 5'7" and size 18. Broad shoulders and no waist to speak of.

Formality: relaxed smart-casual.
Colour: pale. I don't like white, but cream or ivory are fine. Subdued, pale colours also fine.

I don't do heels and will be wearing flat comfortable shoes because there will be a lot of standing. There will also be a lot of sitting in public view, so any dress or skirt needs to come below my knees so that I don't flash my underwear when I'm sitting.

I favour something loose and layered (no predicting how warm or chilly it will be in October) in natural fibres.

Help? Please!

Is Cos your style at all? something like this is very modern and would work with flats. It is appropriate for a casual work event

Sorry, I really don't like that!

Not sure if this in the chilli colour would be subdued enough?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/04/2022 18:10

What sort of shoes are they? Pic?
What sort of event is it?

It's very early to be thinking about October!

I really like these trousers with maybe a silk shirt?

Dilbertian · 08/04/2022 19:16

I like the pleat detail dress, but it's already over my budget without any layering.

I was thinking about £150 all together (but excluding shoes, tights etc) though that's flexible.

Shoes have to wait until my orthotics are sorted, and dear old NHS is not to be rushed. They will almost certainly be something boring and trainer-ish. If they don't go with the outfit, well there's not much point my being hung up about it. I wear the shoes I can find to fit my awkward feet.

Linen is very summery and very crushable. Personally I wouldn't contemplate it for an all day event in October.

Silk shirt dress. Link isn't working.

I wouldn’t buy now …

October is a month for showing off one’s fresh new Autumn wardrobe - particularly in a situation where you’ll be ‘seen’. So unless it’s knitwear in the Spring sales I’d wait until new season stuff appears in July / August. Then you’ll have your pick of the best available.

Sage satin jumpsuit?

TBH I'm really not bothered. I don't pay much attention to fashion. Which is no doubt why I haven't a clue!

Pale pastels and whites are really not to my taste. The event is singing in a synagogue choir on Yom Kippur, hence the pale dress code, and whatever I wear this year will probably do me for the next couple of years.

I'd go pale wide leg trousers - likely can be worn again, depending on the colour of your shoes you can go from cream to beige to sand and depending on your shape you can go more tailored (which is probably smartest looking) or elasticated waist (possible useful for lots of sitting). I'd skip a jumpsuit given you'll be working to someone else's timetable so toilet breaks may be a pain.

On top go with whichever pale colour works best with your skin tone, so for me it would be likely a dusky pink or pale grey/blue but anything could work. I'd look for a silk shirt, or a cami plus longer top. If you want more definition you could go with a blazer as opposed to a long shirt/stop.

Just found www.johnlewis.com this dress. Might work with pale trainers?

Or this gorgeous silk jumpsuit Expensive but looks like it could be really comfortable and flattering.
