Quick help needed - shopping today! For 16yo DD

We have a family wedding next week, 16yo DD has nothing suitable to wear and has no inspiration of what she wants so we are hitting the shops today.

She mainly wears things like jeans and crop top or joggers and sweatshirt for college. Her social life is a close group of friends who have take away with a sleepover so she never really dresses up.

She’s about 5’6”, slim but not skinny, thick long blonde hair (so envious of it!).

I need help to inspire her, before I throttle the child for saying no to everything!!

I just thought - shops we have available would be helpful for any suggestions. We can get to Gunwharf in Portsmouth and the big shopping centre nearby so a good selection. She needs to try on ideally rather than buying online.

A jumpsuit? My DD is a bit younger but lives in joggers or leggings and she preferred a jumpsuit to a dress.

I would just look somewhere like New Look/H&M if it's something she is unlikely to wear much.

Could she wear a smart trouser suit/tuck type thing? They were all the rage at the Oscars last week

raspberryjamchicken · 02/04/2022 09:08

Sorry, meant to say she preferred a jumpsuit when we went to a wedding.

Do you have Hollister? River Island? My 16 yr old is a ladies 8 and we bought a tailored playsuit (shorts & top all in one) - slightly different in that it was abroad but it wasn't particularly short and actually looked lovely. She didnt want a dress (well at least any of the dresses on offer at the time). Mango is good too, as is Zara. If all else fails I would come home tonight and order 4 or 5 options from somewhere like Pretty Little Thing / ASOS with next day delivery.

I think Zara is your best bet for something smart that she won't consider lame.

I think she looks great in a jumpsuit as she’s got the height to carry it off. She wasn’t keen at the ones I was looking at online, but that’s one of the reasons I want her to try stuff on!

I like the suit idea, think she’d look great.

We looked in Hollister and Zara a couple of weeks ago. Older DD got a dress from Hollister, DD16 said it was too primary school teacher for her…

Just to add, she’s very body conscious too. She had cancer treatment which has given her a big scar on her abdomen. It’s still quite sensitive so we have to work around fabrics too.

She’s not easy Grin

New look have some nice jumpsuits, also have a look at H&M (altho their sizing is a bit iffy!!)

H&M are the worst culprits for dodgy sizing, aren’t they? The trousers are always way too long for me.

Depends on her style but maybe a pair of docs with tights and a short dress? It's youthful and the boots go with everything and will last for years.

Success! Strangely from the Ghost outlet. She’s got a dress which is summery but a bit quirky and bright. She looks beautiful…
