Please help, what to wear for christianing?

No idea what I should wear for a christianing in 3 weeks.

I'm 5'6, size 14, 37 years, brunette. I've got quite a tummy so nothing figure hugging.

I'd love some suggestions as I haven't got a clue.

Thank you.

At our church (middle of the road CofE) guests at christenings wear anything from jeans and jumper to wedding-guest type clothes. I’d prob check with the baby’s mother what she’s wearing as if she’s in jeans you might not want to be in a big hat and clutch bag 😉
I tend to wear a nice warm dress, smartish, with plenty of room for lunch afterwards and washable given often lots of kids around!

Nice wrap dress and cardigan if it's cool. I'm from a Methodist church and its very casual to Wedding guest. Sometimes the whole christening party has obviously agreed on a wedding attire dress code. The only look that jars in a church to me, are the youngsters in their cut out, knicker skimming dresses.

I'd say something similar to what would be OK in an office environment, or a dress. No jeans for example.

Churches can be cold even in summer, so be prepared for it to be less warm than say in a shop or hotel.

Are you a godparent? That might make a difference.

TottersBlankly · 02/04/2022 10:51

How about this? Should be warmer by then but you may still need a coat / jacket in church.

I've been to lots of Christenings.
RC Church I always dress up
New Dress
Jacket/Wrap
Heels
Clutch bag
Hair/ Make-Up/Nails done
Spray Tan
I've never known anyone to go to a Christening in jeans. I do wear jeans to Mass on a Sunday but always dress up for Christenings / First Communions.
Hope you have a great time 🥂🥂

I remember a christening (before covid) with babies from two separate families. (Our practice is to hold christenings as part of a normal Sunday service.)

The smaller group included a grandmother in a dog-collar and the mother wore a Nice floral tea-dress. I think the baby was in a sailor suit or similar. Probably Boden.

The other group took up six pews and had a Christening Gown, jackets, hats, costume jewellery, a couple of feathers and quite a few bodycon and skimpy dresses.

(The churchwarden did make a mildly disapproving remark to me afterwards... I pointed out that they had made a massive effort to dress up in their Best Clothes for an Important Occasion, to rather more of an extent than the normal congregation ever did, and he had the grace to look a little shamefaced Grin)

It really will depend on how big the group is, whether it's part of the normal Sunday service, and what the parents are wearing.

All that for a christening? Confused

Nothing in church should invite a snigger amongst the congregation over coffee afterwards about how the collection could have been improved by the imposition of a flesh tax.

TottersBlankly · 02/04/2022 11:20

This is more sober and ‘grown up’. Also cheaper.

Do you have a budget, btw?

CurbsideProphet · 02/04/2022 11:25

The last christening I went to (pre covid) was during a normal Sunday mass. Some people were just there for mass and wearing casual clothes. Those of us there for the christening and party afterwards were dressed quite smartly, ie nice dress and coat, but no spray tans or blow dries.

Viviennemary · 02/04/2022 11:29

People don't normally dress up to the nines for christenings. Smart yes but it's not a wedding. Not low cut or revealing in a church. No jeans. Clutches pearls.

For a Catholic christening in Ireland (at least all the ones I've been to, which is millions as I have loads of cousins) this is bang on. The christenings back home have been far more dressy uppy than any wedding I've attended in England! The only difference is no hats/fascinators.

Is t that a bit old fashioned Confused haven't seen anyone that dressed up like that in years, even weddings are more jumpsuits and relaxed blazers, undone hair etc, and I'm Irish catholic
