Does anything prevent hormonal chin spots?

Boscoforever · 29/03/2022 23:10

I have lovely skin (says herself!). But the last few years I keep getting spots on my chin. Not a regular spot/white head type thing. A red painful lump. One will come, be sore and angry, then eventually leave. Then another one starts. They leave discolouration and scar (if I poke at the blasted things!). I had some success with salicylic acid, but they are back again. Really want rid of them. Any tips, please?
I am late 40s and take cerezette, p.o.p, so no periods. But spots seem to be every 3/4 weeks…

Do you use retinol? I'm finding it really useful for reducing spots, as well as improving the rest of my skin. It's not a spot treatment, I use it all over.

Also a sufferer of hormonal acne and I did an online consult with dermatica, they prescribed tretinoin. Amazing results and helps reduce red scarring. I feel confident enough to go out without foundation on now which hadn't happened in 10+ years

wfrances · 29/03/2022 23:34

Also started tret for deep chin spots
Seems to be working so far

Lovely234 · 29/03/2022 23:45

Another Dermatica customer here, its been completely miraculous for my hormonal acne

Gooseysgirl · 30/03/2022 05:45

Oh wow I had not heard of Dermatica! Just had this convo with my sister last night, both of us mid-40s regularly getting these spots. My chin area is ruined from the scarring and at a very minimum I have to wear concealer on it every day. I actually had to take a painkiller one night because the spot was so sore!

ISpyCobraKai · 30/03/2022 05:50

Nothing stops them for me, put an aspirin made into a paste with water gets rid of them really quickly, and deals with the pain.

purplesequins · 30/03/2022 06:14

zinc
the ordinary niaciamide& zinc serum seems to help them not getting red and angry and to fade the scars a bit.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 30/03/2022 06:58

I used to get exactly this when I had a Mirena coil. The only thing that stopped it was getting it taken out. When did you start with Cerazette?

MissManagable · 30/03/2022 07:09

I get the exact same spots OP, started about 3 years ago and seem to be every 3/4 weeks too (also a picker which does make them so sore!)

I bought a peroxide cream (acnecide) from the pharmacy and if I can leave the buggers alone and apply as soon as I feel one coming they calm down and go. Also and aztec clay mask one a month with Apple cider vinegar.

Really interested in the pps suggestions on Dermatica! I'd love a cure for these (and save a fortune on concealers, foundations et al! Does it really reduce/get rid of them?

lomoloko · 30/03/2022 07:29

Prescription tretinoin with niacinamide from a dermatologist like Dermatica or Skin+Me.

Winkydink · 30/03/2022 07:32

Getting my mirena coil removed. But while I still had the coil in a Derm friend prescribed benzel peroxide which if I used early enough stopped them in their tracks

Shurl · 30/03/2022 07:34

Mini pill caused this for me as well, initially. Although I haven't had one for a few months, so hoping it's settled down now. (It was the longest lasting side effect I had so there is hope!)

I don't think I ever cracked the solution, but just wanted to say mine have cleared up eventually all on their own

Ringmaster27 · 30/03/2022 07:35

Skin+Me has been a godsend for me. My prescription is niacinamide, azelaic acid and low dose tretinoin.
After discussion with my Dr, I was also advised that contraceptive pills with higher dose progesterone are more likely to aggravate acne. So I’m on a pill with a very low dose of progesterone. My new pill combined with Skin+Me has made my skin look better than it has since I was about 12!

MissManagable · 30/03/2022 07:42

What to get from Dermatica? I've just had a look and they do a cream, moisturiser and cleanser? I've used the same moisturiser for years (clinique dramatically different) and its perfect for my skin (I wear make up on the daily) so a bit reluctant to change if it's really drying?

OldTinHat · 30/03/2022 07:56

Thank you for posting this OP, I was about to ask the same question. 50 here, also on POP and get acne every three or four weeks on my chin!

Could be a start-of-perimenopause thing. Do you have any other symptoms of low estrogen?

anxiouslyanxious · 30/03/2022 08:16

I find La roche posay effaclar duo really reduces them and takes away the pain. I put it on before bed and in the morning it's almost always gone.

lomoloko · 30/03/2022 09:01

@MissManagable I think you're looking at the wrong thing. Dermatica don't sell you products - they prescribe you a single cream, made for you and posted once a month. Skin+Me also do this, but the bottle is nicer.

lomoloko · 30/03/2022 09:02

Er... sorry, they do sell you products, but that's not what people are recommending.

Thejoyfulstar · 30/03/2022 09:09

I got this every month and thought my recent pregnancy would sort it out, but I still got them. Halfway through my pregnancy, I got diagnosed with gestational diabetes and had to cut sugar out of my diet. For the first time in years the spots went away! Totally gone. Now that I've had the baby, I'm trying to keep my sugar levels down to keep them at bay. Before I got pregnant I noticed that cycle seemed strange. I started getting signs of ovulation a few days after my period ended which would last about a week. I started taking coenzyme q10 and the first month I took it, my cycle seemed different and I got pregnant that month. I think I had a hormonal imbalance before that the q10 seemed to fix. Might be worth a try.

Thank you so much for all the replies.
To answer a question, I’ve been in Cerezette years and they will have to orise it from my cold dead fingers,Grin. Not having periods for 15 years ish has been a major life changer.
It isn’t necessarily every 3/4 weeks I suppose. There seems to be one brewing or fading all the time.
Not sure about perimenipause, must look it up.
I use La Roche Posay, started retinol last month. No change to spots.
Will have a look at all the other recommendations. Particularly the zinc/aspirin, just to stop them getting so prominent.
Thanks all.

The GP prescribed me Differin which totally cleared them.

ouch321 · 30/03/2022 15:30

If it's cystic acne I had to go on Roaccutane to get rid.
