Hello! Can't see a facial sunscreen thread recently so thought I'd start one.

Which sunscreens are you using this year and why?

The range seems to have improved a lot in the last couple of years thank goodness. I'm looking for a new one 🤞🏼

@FrownsAndDimples I get melasma as soon as I go in the sun despite wearing SPF50. Are physical SS better than chemical for this? What do I need to look for?

The Boots No7 protect and perfect facial SPF50 is nice and I've repurchased many times, but it is about £15 which is seems a bit steep. I'm currently using a boots Soltan baby spf50 on my face, it was about £3.50 and seems fine and the price is far more reasonable than the no7 one.

The best one I have ever tried, bar none (probably even better than the Japanese ones) is the LaRoche Posay Anthelios Invisible Fluid SPF50 www.laroche-posay.co.uk/en_GB/anthelios-uvmune-400-invisible-fluid-spf50-sun-cream-50ml/LRPUK-164.html - but it costs a fortune, something like £14-18 for 50 ml!

Our favourite (but still reasonably priced) ones are:
Vichy Melting Gel SPF50
www.vichy.co.uk/en_GB/capital-soleil-melting-milk-gel-spf-50/VICUK-088.html
Not the easiest to find, but you can find it for ca. £20 (for 200ml) on Amazon; this French store sells it for £15 including an aftersun, and ships to the UK
www.cocooncenter.co.uk/vichy-ultra-melting-milk-gel-spf-50-200ml-soothing-after-sun-milk-100ml-free/30811.html?gclid=CjwKCAjw682TBhATEiwA9crl35hj6guGne507Je1rdjZAblPzhjDcWngLgutQadd1XPLm1b0nqoawhoC3SkQAvD_BwE

It is not as light on the skin as the crazy expensive one, but it is good and seems to resist well to water (within reason - we always reapply after 2-3 hours if we spend the day at the beach).

The Altruist SPF 50 is also very good, easy to find on Amazon and cheaper.

The whole family also likes Japanese sunscreens (Nivea Japan - very different from the Nivea sunscreens sold in the West, Biore Watery Essence, Biore Watery Gel, Anessa perfect milk, Aness perfect gel). In the past we have bought these from yesstyle and stylevana but they are more expensive. Basically we would buy a few of these to use during spring in the city, but only use the Vichy and the Altruist for things like beach vacations, where we seem to consume more litres of sunscreen than of beer...

A few more comments:

no sunscreen will work perfectly on all skin types, so there will always be negative reviews on every product.

It is possible to get very good and cheap protection from the likes of Aldi Lidl etc. When you pay more, you are not really paying to have a better protection, you are paying more for something which feels lighter and nicer on the skin (we tried the Lidl ones and didn't like them)

many people apply too little sunscreen, don't let it dry on their skin, maybe immediately put on clothes which rub some of it off and maybe dive before the sunscreen has been absorbed. In many cases, when people post negative reviews because they got sunburnt it's due to a combination of these factors rather than to the product being faulty.

I use the Inkey List face sunscreen as recommended by Skin & Me. It feels a bit dry when you put it on, but when it sinks it feels fine. The only thing I've found that doesn't go mad when foundation is added!
