How to stop raw hem jeans fraying too much

Towelseverywhere · 27/03/2022 19:28

I bought some raw hem jeans and love them
But when I wash them the hems fray and go really fluffy. I see loads of people wearing raw hem jeans that aren’t fluffy, what’s the secret?

This is how they should look and after washing they’re frayed like this! Well not quite as long fraying, but you get my point

I used to use this a lot when I was younger. Wasn't even sure they still made it, but they do. amzn.to/3JOTuXs

You could also use clear nail Polish or even super glue. I would apply on the inside part of the Jean though

Towelseverywhere · 28/03/2022 16:13

Thanks, I’ll get some of that and try it.
Hopefully it’ll work.
I’m just confused about raw hem jeans though, I see so many people wearing them
And they’re not massively frayed, and I can’t believe they’re all using a product like this. Maybe my jeans were made from some kind of denim that frays a lot, so weird

They could have trimmed them? Or also they could have an invisible stitch around the hem to stop them from fraying?

That being said I've got a few pairs of raw hem jeans and haven't had a problem

You could try using a substance called fray check. I use it in sewing for button holes etc to stop them fraying.

Do you tumble dry the jeans?

Towelseverywhere · 28/03/2022 17:14

No I don’t tumble dry them, it’s just the washing that makes them fray. I’ve seen influencers talk about cutting jeans to get the right length and leaving a raw hem, but never mention a fraying problem and their jeans don’t seem to go fluffy around the bottom. To be honest I can’t really imagine how washing them wouldn’t fray them but other
People seem to manage. I’m at a loss!

Hmm. After chopping, DD tumble drys hers and that seems to matt the fibres together and stops them fraying further. Might be worth a try ( use a cool freshen up setting if concerned about shrinkage).

NutellaEllaElla · 28/03/2022 17:21

You could sew a simple stay stitch to prevent it from fraying beyond a certain point.

Tigofigo · 28/03/2022 17:53

I had the exact same issue OP

I've just had to embrace the fluffy finish

Towelseverywhere · 28/03/2022 21:16

Thanks for all the suggestions. And Tigo, glad it’s not just me!

Sew a line of straight stitching just above the fraying, that will stop it fraying further.

Thanks, I can see that would work. I would just love to understand how other peoples jeans don’t fray though! I was hoping for a tip on how to wash them to avoid it or something really

I tend to trim mine but they certainly don6fray to any extent that it takes inches off the length of the jeans or anything similar, just frequent long threads hanging.

Lightly applied fabric glue would presumably sort it, I saw a friend once do this using an old makeup brush to apply it. There are specific products such as 'fray block' which you can get in amazon but I bet it's just overpriced glue.

toomanytwinkies · 29/03/2022 22:32

Mine look like you say OP as I just cut them 🤣 They don’t fray up though, just get the odd white danglies.

Ugh that sounds grim.
