Do collagen supplements work?

Just that really - will they really improve my skin and appearance? I’ve checked out a couple and the reviews are very favourable but I’d like to hear real life experiences before I take the plunge and buy some.

I am a scientist. I've also fallen for the collagen scam. There is no denying that in the 2 months I've been taking it my skin is plumper and my very much thinning hair seems to be doing better too. Nothing else in my routine has changed.

Collagen is a protein. It is broken down in the body into amino acids to build new proteins (of which there are a huge number required by the body). The collagen doesn't stay whole and make its way to the skin and joints. And in any case, meat is full of it. Save your cash.

Any more updates on this? I just bought some collagen from H and B on a whim…..sheer boredom!

Arnaquer · 12/06/2022 11:00

I have the marine collagen powder for H&B and haven't noticed a difference.
Am now taking Feel vitamins having been drawn in in Instagram. I e noticed a difference in my hair and skin.
Someone told me my skin was glowing the other day .

Isn’t a packet of Haribo a cheaper nicer more palatable alternative ?

When I looked, H&B didn't have any with a good amount. I've tried the big blue box thing, but my last shipment was blocked at customs.
Does anyone know of a good one produced in the EU?

Not if you don't like Haribo and don't want to eat it every day. Or believe it would really do the same thing...

This has all been very interesting reading. Despite the potential lack of scientific evidence I think I’m still going to give them a go. I’ve seen a liquid vitamin supplements including collagen that’s meant to focus on gut health that I think I will try first.

Would that have enough collagen though?

ilovetomatoes · 12/06/2022 13:49

I went for the Dose and Co marine collagen powder from H and B. Got good reviews on several sites, let’s see. Feels like I just wasted 30 quid but I was feeling very sluggish and haggard this morning….

SatsumaZoom · 09/01/2023 07:33

@Howdiditgetsobad how did you get on? Just saw a post from Davina saying her physio tells her to use it. And not that I believe everything I hear but I do rather like Davina!!!!!

Sorry, haven't had time to reply. I bought some marine collagen from Healthspan online. It was about £12 for 120/1 a day. I researched and their's is hydrolysed which apparently makes it more easily absorbed. I think you have to try these things and see if they work for you.
Also, I must admit that once I'm taking a supplement I also pull back after an initial splurge because I reckon my body shouldn't get reliant on things and maybe I was a bit short and needed a top up so now I take every few days.
It has made a massive difference to my skin. Maybe I should say though that I've been veggie for years so I'm not getting animal protein. I have reluctantly started eating fish occasionally.

Hydrolysed collagen is gelatine, so a packet of Haribos would do the same job. This isn’t as bonkers as you might think. When we were little my grandma would give us a cube of jelly to ‘give us strong nails and shiny hair’.

Picoloangel · 09/01/2023 07:42

Following…
I used bovine for a while and joints were better but not sure anything else improved.
I also used a v v heavily promoted form in a fruit flavoured gel and that made no difference at all.
I do currently have a marine supplement though I keep forgetting to take it!

My Mum did this too!

figmaofmyimagination · 09/01/2023 08:05

I tried the cube of jelly thing again recently after getting a random slab of jelly in an online shop. I had a cube every day or two and my nails got really strong! Maybe i should repackage some in fancy jars and make a fortune…

Farmageddon · 09/01/2023 11:32

I suppose if you were not getting enough protein before taking these, you might notice a bit of a difference.
But as previous posters have said, save your money and just eat more protein - you will get the same benefits.

Howdiditgetsobad · 09/01/2023 15:07

Hello @SatsumaZoom and others. I can’t say that I have been consistently taking a collagen supplement since I last posted, so not really anything much to update!

I have been more consistent since the new year so we will see. I’m actually taking the Aguulp for gut supplements as they have 3000mg marine collagen as well as various vitamins and probiotics. I needed this as my gut was really affected by (what I can only assume) was my emergency c-section and antibiotics etc. and it has really helped with that and I’m back to normal. Phew. It’s absolutely RANK though. Sort of a snotty liquid with lumpy bits and a fishy aftertaste that’s partially disguised by mint flavouring. 🤢

Nails, hair and skin looking pretty decent so maybe it’s helped?! Still have terrible eye bags but I have a one year old and four year old who don’t let me sleep so doubt anything could really work a miracle on that front.
