Are all mirrors equal? Or are some slimming?

So I have about 3 full length mirrors at home and I’m happy-ish at what I see in them. I’m 5”7 and size 10-12 and I look fairly slim in my mirrors. My mirrors are just standard ones from ikea.

Recently I went to stay with a friend and was shocked how much bigger I appeared to look in her full length mirror.

Are some mirrors slimming? How do I know what’s my true reflection? Do I need to take photos? But even then I often look odd in photos (not very photogenic)

No, no mirrors are equal. The one I my bedroom, I look amazing in. A total babe. The one in the hallway, I look like Mr bloody. Don't even get me started on car mirrors. Why is it that I can only see the hairs on my chin in that mirror?!

babywalker2 · 25/03/2022 12:25

In all seriousness though, I think you can angle mirrors to become.morw flattering. They certainly use that technique in some retail stores.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 25/03/2022 12:26

Some mirrors are definitely slimming

Williamshatnershorses · 25/03/2022 12:28

I think it depends on the width of the full-length mirror. The narrower it is, the narrower you look!

WeirdArchitecture · 25/03/2022 16:05

I have found it's hit or miss.
The best one I have is from Ikea, a large one that leans on the wall. It seems about correct.

But we have a narrow one downstairs that slices about 8lbs off you, and another very narrow one in the bathroom that adds a stone and flattens your head Grin
It doesn't always seem price dependent either, so always visit your mirror before buying as online risks are demoralising!

Some of those full wall gym and dance mirrors I find the worst.

TheWeeDonkey · 25/03/2022 18:07

See this is why I can't buy things from Next, because all I can see is my huge wobbly lard arse casting a shadow over the rest of my body.

Zazdar · 25/03/2022 18:18

The one in my local Next makes me look lIke a bean pole. River Island is as bad.

Fozzleyplum · 29/03/2022 09:49

Slanted mirrors or those propped against a wall tend to make you look a bit taller and thinner. I think that some shops/ changing rooms have mirrors that are very slightly bowed to produce the same effect. On the (now rare) occasions that I try anything on on a shop, if I look suspiciously slender in the mirror, I look at it edge on to see if it has been distorted. You can sometimes spot what they have done!

Rina66 · 29/03/2022 09:50

Definitely, slimming mirrors are a thing!

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 29/03/2022 09:58

Maybe your mirror is the accurate one?!

Doubleraspberry · 29/03/2022 10:01

My parents used to have a bank of wardrobes with mirrored doors, and one of the doors was far more flattering than the others!

Don't forget how different light can help too.

CambsAlways · 29/03/2022 14:04

Yes there’s def a thing as a slimming mirror

IEatChocolateForBreakfast · 29/03/2022 15:03

Yes, my office loos have skinny mirrors. Whenever I go in, I take a look and think oooh I look so slim. If I ever have to take a photo of my outfit it's of my reflection in one of those mirrors 😆

My gym also has skinny mirrors in the loo, but as a PP said, the full wall ones make me look 10lbs heavier. Not sure if it's done on purpose as a motivation thing? You see yourself working out and you think you look fat, so keep working out. Then leave and stop off at the loo and see yourself and say damn! This gym workout has paid off 😂

Psychonabike · 29/03/2022 15:08

Watch this @JammyCandy

Skinny mirrors in shops are a thing!

GeoffLynton · 29/03/2022 15:08

I rented a flat in my early twenties that had an amazing mirror on the landing. It took a good half stone at least off you- my mates used to come get ready for a night out at mine, just due to that mirror.

I was so tempted to replace it (claim it got broken) and take the Mirror of Miracles with me when I moved out, but I didn't

padsi1975 · 29/03/2022 15:17

I hope they are. There's a Zara near where I work and I look hideous in it, just a pile of lumps and sag. I am hoping it's just a combo of bad lighting and cruel mirror and I do t really look that bad.

VerityPJohnson · 29/03/2022 16:05

Yes you look better in some mirrors than others. Lighting is also important. Oftentimes shops put spotlights over mirrors.

PlainJaneEyre · 29/03/2022 16:16

M and S rear view mirrors are just the pits!

thebabessavedme · 29/03/2022 23:06

There are 'correct' mirrors which show how fabulous one looks, the very poor quality ones which make one look like Mr Blobby and then the ones that hairdressers buy from a special shop, I think its called 'fucking awful mirroers designed to make your customers look shit' or something like that Grin

Longfurry · 30/03/2022 00:01

I have never bought an item of clothing that I tried on in a shop that has multiple angle/ rearview mirrors in the changing rooms. M and S makes me just want to cry.

Yes, love a good song mirror.

MyBottomDecides · 30/03/2022 00:08

I'm deeply suspicious of mirrors after some disastrous purchases that lying bastart slimming ones convinced me I could pull off. I couldn't...

Now I check them by holding up both hands backs towards the mirror, and then rotating one to horizontal. If the horizontal hand suddenly looks much wider than the vertical one, you know you're deali with with a lying mirror!

M&S are guilty of this, the mirrors on the shop floor are all thicker at the bottom than at the top when you look at the side edge, this is why clothes look fantastic on you in the store but like a sack of spuds in the mirror of truth at home.
