Will I ever have clear skin?

Any tips for hormonal acne? By acne I mean 1-2 spots every month on my chin. Rest of my face is clear. I know I don't have much to complain about, but at nearly 40 I feel my spotty days should be behind me. I have been plagued by a spotty chin since my early twenties.

I drink plenty of water, reasonable diet, cleanse and use a bha, hyaluronic and light moisturiser by day. At night I cleanse and use Skin+me which is tretinoin with azalaid acid and niacinamide. Spots are always around time of period.

Any suggestions gratefully received

I had this problem but I had 3/4 months of skin and me with clindamycin instead of niacinimide and it pretty much went away, I had two chin spots in 4 months and they were tiny little whiteheads rather than the under the skin sore lumps I used to get. Might be worth asking the skin and me prescriber to change to that and see if it helps?

Yes this is me too, it's so depressing when you can't trust your skin. People who don't have this issue will never understand. My spots are actually really painful. I have really really oily skin (at 46) which it's so easy to clog.

Problem is we are all different so have to find our own way. That's why people often suggest professional help. I personally have found Dermatica's tret+niacinamide+Clindamycin (antibiotic) has made a huge difference. I have to have a break from the Clindamycin for three months so am holding my breath.

I also believe diet is connected strangely, despite it being hormonal. We know sugar causes inflammation in the body generally. I also think dairy is problematic. My spots reduce when I diet and I don't think that's coincidence.

HRT (oestrogen) is also helping now as the pill did in my thirties.

Verity Please read up on Spironolactone. It seriously changed my skin. I had oily skin and spots from early teens. My skin only ever cleared up when on the combination pill (some worked better than others, Dianette being the best). I had to stop the pill so went to see a private dermatologist who actually listened to my concerns. A few spots isn't serious to some people but when you've had it all your life it is shit.

Anyway she recommended an NHS dermatogolist and asked my GP to refer me to her. She was brilliant and fixed me up straight away with this wonder drug.

spironolactone

I still take it but I think now I am in my fifties and definitely well into perimenopause (and taking HRT) my skin is probably fine without it.

I second Fcuk about the T tree and the posters who have said cut down on sugar and dairy. Eating much more fresh citrus fruit is great too for skin, the Vitamin C is incredible for looking good.
Lavender is another essential oil (they're not oils by the way) to try it's extraordinarily effective for every skin problem. I don't buy any products now except for those oils, which I mix with shea butter for my very dry skin, and weleda baby care.

yes, me too - I've switched to oil cleansing and using all-natural brands like Weleda and Dr Hauschka and my skin is the best it has ever been. very few wrinkles for my age (early 40s) too, so I am really pleased!
ppeatfruit · 25/03/2022 09:38

lune Yes I use Dr. Hauschka make up too! There is also an organic make up called INIKA btw. It's lovely.

Iwonder08 · 25/03/2022 09:56

I can highly recommend Accumax skin supplements. Not cheap, but it really made the difference. Does wonders to hormonal acne

Rosesarere · 25/03/2022 10:00

I have suffered with bad skin since my early teens, numerous rounds of antibiotics and difference contraceptive pills without much luck. I now use a cream prescribed from dermatica, my skin is the best uts ever been. I don't suffer with breakouts at all now. It's fab!

Agree with another post about the Paula's choice bha, love this

Long term AB's for acne are terrible , all the doctors know that they are beginning to cause bad problems if you get diseases that REALLY need them. because people are becoming immune to them.

Cleaning up your diet (stop eating junk all the time) Have fresh fruit and veg is what works in the long term, and evening primrose oil or camomile supplements.

Jemimapuddleduk · 26/03/2022 10:41

The ordinary azaleic acid is so good. The only thing that has made a difference to my hormonal acne. Game changer.

Fluffycloudland77 · 26/03/2022 13:15

Dh is on antibiotics for life. Used correctly they work.

This is what happened to me. I took ABs for years and then got sepsis and was told in no uncertain terms to stop. They didn’t cause the sepsis but my consultant said it didn’t help my situation. If need be a few months on roaccutane is safer and sorts the problem out for good in most cases.
stevalnamechanger · 26/03/2022 21:47

Switch to Dermatica ... IMO superior

ppeatfruit · 28/03/2022 08:16

Fluffy Your dh will have to make sure he doesn't eat any meat that has been fed ABs all the time.

Or to not cut himself and get sepsis as Clarabe says.

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/03/2022 09:20

The gloating style of your post suggests you want my dh who’s currently under 5 different departments to be even more unwell?

Do you think you honestly know better than any of his 5 consultants, 3 of whom are professors?

ElephantLover · 28/03/2022 11:01

www.kallistia.com/

Game changer. High dose of VitA (not high enough to need prescription) and other natural herbs. No side effects.
All clear in 2 weeks.

I am 44 and struggled with hormonal acne for 3 decades.

Look up the reviews and photos.

ppeatfruit · 30/03/2022 10:25

Fluffy I'm not sure if you're posting about me. I'm very sorry for your dh. Also sorry If you read my post as being perjorative. My dh is not well either. But sadly his doctors haven't been much help . The only way he improves is by not eating the foods he's allergic to. Magnesium has helped him a lot too. He got that from on line.

I study health and alternative remedies

Isabelle70 · 30/03/2022 20:54

I would try Dermatica. I have been on it for just over 2 months and my skin is getting clearer by the day.

LadyBananaHammock · 30/03/2022 21:08

Just putting this out there as might be helpful for you and/or others. I had what I thought was hormonal acne for a good 25 years until I discovered it was actually perioral dermatitis. Not acne at all!

I found some random photos of PD one day and thought oh that’s me. Followed the protocol (no fluoride toothpaste, no SLS) and bingo…clear skin ever since. Do a Google search for images…you may find it helps.

ppeatfruit · 31/03/2022 10:10

Yes Lady It's so interesting how many of our health problems are down to allergies! I used to have rosacea\eczema and gave up all 'deadly nightshade' vegetables, it completely cleared up!

I always get some eczema if I have any now though!
