Talk me out (or in!) a pixie!

As in the title. I have a 6 month old DD, I'm fed up with her constantly pulling my hair- I always, always wear it up. In fact I think my face looks ok without any hair near it.

However I have quite a wide face, with not-so-perfect skin, deep dark shadows under my bespectacled eyes and my teeth although straight, show clear signs of caffeine addiction and are slightly yellow.

Can I get away with short hair? I had it in my late teens, now mid 30s so worried it will age me.
My hairdresser is cheap and round the corner from my house so not a problem.
More worried about kinky hair every morning and aging myself- although I find hair longer than on the first pic unflattering on me as it's very fine and flat.

I had shorter bobs (jawline) and loved them, but it would be too grabbable by DD at the moment.

I have had a pixie. My hair is very thick and wavy pushing towards curly. It needs styling every morning. With my hair, that’s shove head under shower, rub with towel, apply curl gel, scrunch, crack on with the day, so not too bad. But I know people who have to carefully style and blow dry, so have completely regretted it because of the time it takes in the morning.
Long hair, can just be scraped back and so that is easier and baby proof.
So, I guess it depends on your hair type.

Also, it will need cutting every 5-6 weeks so bear that in mind for time, childcare and budget.

travailtotravel · 19/03/2022 10:52

I say yes. I did it recently also and have found it liberating!

Consider cost of cuts and how often you can afford it. Mine grows quickly and is best done every 6 weeks. I'm going to have to try and eek it out to 8 weeks ....

absolutelynotfabulous · 19/03/2022 10:53

I think you'd definitely suit a pixie. Go for it. The right one (with the right products, cut and maybe colour) can be low maintenance.

I have a pixie (around 3/4 inches, choppy layers and highlights for body) and as long as I get it trimmed around every 8 weeks or so I can manage it. Mine is particularly thin and fine. I also cut it myself occasionally although I'm trying to wean myself off that habit.

inheritancetrack · 19/03/2022 10:54

You have the perfect face shape for it.
show us when its done.

PixiePlease · 19/03/2022 10:55

My hair is pretty much the opposite, it's very fine and straight but there's lots of it. I know it would need washing or at least wetting every morning, been there done that so not kidding myself.
I'm hoping it would make me feel a bit more styled rather than wearing a hair clip all the time. When I have it longer I just wear a ponytail.

I too was going to say I’d be worried the “easy” pixie cut might take ages to style if you have awkward hair that sticks out or looks fluffy or goes curly in the wrong way. And then the constant trims you’ll need.

I suspect long hair drying naturally and then tied up nicely might be ten times easier.

statetrooperstacey · 19/03/2022 11:00

I’m not sure , your hair suits you and looks very easy maintenance atm. You can probably have it looking nice in 5 mins with the straighteners . Short hair not so much! Takes ages to style ime and a bad hair day cannot easily be disguised. Also it’s only a week or 2 difference to go from hallie berry to William shatner. Regular haircuts are a must! How much time do you have in the mornings?

It sticks out if I sleep on it wet, which I probably shouldn't do anyway! If air dried it just stays straight. I don't think it would be necessarily 'easier' than my hairclip situation now, but if it looks more fun and makes me feel better I can put up with constant washing.

@statetrooperstacey Grin at William Shatner comment! I don't have too much time with two young DDs, but I don't have to rush to work at least. Yes bad hair days were the worst with short hair.

OK I'm going to tell the truth. Just don't. Unless you look like Kylie ie elfin features and tiny face, a pixie cut is extremely unforgiving and I don't think you have the face shape for it. It will age you.

You'd be better finding a style that gives you some body in your hair.

PixiePlease · 19/03/2022 11:04

@User76745333 I do have quite a wide, squareish face. What style do you think would be better?

OP posts:
VerityPJohnson · 19/03/2022 11:12

I think the short look is more ageing, I say that as someone with a very short hair cut wondering what to do next. I’ve enjoyed it and felt more confident and as there’s barely anything there it’s not been v high maintenance and it suits me but I do think it just looks a bit ‘sensible’ and as a result ageing.

PixiePlease · 19/03/2022 11:15

Thank you @VerityPJohnson! I'm sure you look lovely but I think I know what you mean. I'd go with a shorter bob for myself but it would be to impractical for me now. Have you thought of growing a part of your pixie out, so it's asymetrical and perhaps less 'sensible'?

MrsBertBibby · 19/03/2022 11:23

I got mine cut short with a side swept fringe, and my God I wish I did it years ago. It makes me look slimmer, and younger, and it's dead easy to make it look fine.

Very fine floppy frizz prone hair, which I thought would be a disaster cut short. It's revolutionised my life!

MrsBertBibby · 19/03/2022 11:26

And very much not an elfin face. Or great skin. Or great teeth.

DuckyNoMates · 19/03/2022 14:54

I have a similar urge for a pixie due to LO who likes to grab hair. I have so far resisted and gone for a short bob I can tuck behind my ears and clip bits back if needed.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 19/03/2022 15:16

I really loved my pixie cut - did it for the same reasons as you, hair grabbing DC meant I always tied it back. But I gave up on it in the end because I had to get it cut every 4/5 weeks as my hair grows quickly, and I found that a cheaper hairdresser couldn't get the style right, so it was costing me a fortune.

PixiePlease · 19/03/2022 15:34

I was considering growing it out longer so I would have more hairstyle options but not sure what's the point if I have it up anyway. Plus anything more than a couple of inches longer than shoulders ends up a limp mess that needs lots of styling... or wearing up.

Maybe I should just shave it off and wear a wig like an ancient Egyptian Grin

Go for the pixie. You've done it before so it won't be scary, you know what is involved and you have a great face shape for it. Most people are incredibly conservative with their hair and don't change it so you'll tend to get lots of people on here saying 'no' because they find the idea so scary.

I don't currently have a pixie (grew it out over lockdown, it's currently a layered bob which is about as long as I get before I want to cut it short again) but will go back to it in a year or so because I love it so much. It's so easy, I swim every morning and with a pixie I can just quickly towel dry then finger style it, no product or fuss required and then I don't have to think about it for the rest of the day and it stays out of my face. Love it.

Purpleavocado · 19/03/2022 15:54

I've had a lot of pixie cuts over the years. If you can't get a haircut every 5 weeks or so they can start to look mullety. They grow out into a bob fairly easily but obviously it would take a long time to get to shoulder length. They are quick and easy to style. I think I need more makeup and nice earrings or I look a bit plain when I have one.

Loopytiles · 19/03/2022 15:57

Don’t think the pixie cut would suit your face.

RoyKentsChestHair · 19/03/2022 16:07

I think it would suit you - you have a lovely shaped face for a short cut. I’ve had every style and colour under the sun and I find short hair is the easiest and quickest to style as it dries so fast and even using tongs or straighteners is so much quicker when it’s short. I currently have a long Bob and can’t be bothered to do anything with it as it takes ages. When it’s even longer it’s just ponytails every day.

It’s only hair, it will grow back. Have fun with it!

PixiePlease · 21/03/2022 11:48

Well if it isn't a controversial subject. I know not everyone likes short hair, I remember loving it last time bar the growing out process.
I do look great in a hat so that could work on a bad hair day, but I do not want to look 'aged' and sensible.
Longer hair drags my face down and lies very flat so it's not a good look so it's usually similar length to now. I always feel a shame cutting it as in itself it's very shiny and silky, I just find it a bit boring.

Would something like this be more 'fun' and not sensible? I'm not kidding myself that I have face like this though Grin

I quite like that but to me it IS sensible. I'd go for something similar but with a bit more height perhaps? A bit more choppy? Some nice ideas on Pinterest.
