silicone free shampoo -works?

MarineBlue33 · 17/03/2022 12:27

I really want this to work but and read somewhere you have to really rinse well (which I am sure I do), but my hair remains with a greasy feel.
Any tips?

Or is this is how it is for everyone else too?

Try the Faith in Nature range of shampoos and conditioners.

FayCarew · 17/03/2022 13:02

The Herbal Essences Dazzling Shine one is good

MarineBlue33 · 17/03/2022 13:19

Do they wash out easily and give you a non greasy feel? An actual clean hair feel?

Yes. I like it as a shampoo and I'm fairly fussy. Having said that, I accidentally washed my hair twice in a row with face wash and it did the job

The silicon in shampoo is there to give a silky feel, not to clean, so it shouldn't make a difference to rinsability.

If you go for a SLS-free shampoo, you might find it not as good for cleaning

Another vote for Faith in Nature. Currently using Hemp & Meadowfoam - hair feels really clean, shampoo lathers up well.

MarineBlue33 · 17/03/2022 13:32

@FayCarew Oh, I might have been getting mixed up. It is a SLS free shampoo I am using. Is that completely different to silicone free shampoos?

I think you have to be conscious of the other products you're using. Make sure your conditioner and styling products are also silicone free. Some products with heavy silicones might not wash out easily but I've not had any issues as long as I am careful with other products.

FayCarew · 17/03/2022 13:37

Yes, one is CH3(CH2)10CH2(OCH2CH2)nOSO3Na i.e. no Si at all
the other is Si

or one is a detergent the other a lubricant

Neither are particularly bad.

Phyllis321 · 17/03/2022 13:40

I've used silicone free for ages and my hair's never been better. It's very fine but feels much fuller without silicone, and it has a nice shine.
I've been using the shampoo bars by Garnier, the Hair Food stuff (Garnier?) and various bars from health food shops etc. The Grum bar was amazing.

FayCarew · 17/03/2022 13:49

The Ethique shampoo bars are good.
I also like Avalon Organics.
I tend to chop and change depending on what's been reduced.

Fleur405 · 17/03/2022 14:15

Yes SLS and silicone are totally different.

Silicone is usually in hair styling products and conditioner. You wash your hair with a detergent (usually SLS - sodium laureth sulphate) which makes the individual hair strands swell up and feel rough and so then you use a conditioner/product with silicone to make it feel smooth. But then you have to wash the silicone off with detergent. I stopped using SLS shampoos and products containing silicone about 5 years ago no longer need conditioner and can go much longer between washes.

Fleur405 · 17/03/2022 14:17

Basically SLS is the same detergent that is in cleaning products (like dishwashing liquid) and is what makes it foam.

Cedarfire · 17/03/2022 14:18

Sulfate free shampoos don’t foam as much as those with Sulfates in them so you need to really scrub your scalp whilst washing your hair to help clean it. You also need to cut all silicone at the same time otherwise the silicone will stay in your hair making it heavy and greasy. Sulfates are needed to wash silicone out of your hair as it’s not water soluble. So check your conditioner and hair serums etc. Its a bit more complicated than just buying sulfate free shampoo unfortunately.

MarineBlue33 · 17/03/2022 15:12

Oh my, so confused now. Can someone recommend what I should use that will not leave my hair greasy feeling pls?
I don't use any styling products. I just want to use shampoo and conditioners which are less chemical based, kinder to the scalp but actually make my hair look clean. Currently using SLS free shampoo and SLS free conditioner and hair looks and feels oily. Just the next day.

It takes the hair a while to adjust to SLS free. SLS is very strong and strips the hair of all natural oils, this encourages your skin to produce more oil. When you stop using it your hair produces a lot of oil still because its used to being stripped again each wash. Once your skin gets used to the new shampoo you will produce less oil. I wenn completely shampoo free. I had to wash my hair every day before. Now i wash 2x a week. It took almost 2 months of oily hair though until it stopped.

JuteWeaver · 17/03/2022 16:30

I've been using silicone-free shampoo & conditioner for a couple of years now and I find I need to wash my hair less often, which is a good thing. I don't have that greasy feeling the next day.

FoggySpecs · 17/03/2022 18:30

What texture is your hair? My hair is straight and fine and I've tried all these SLS and Silicone free recommendations and been underwhelmed, I now just stick to L'Oréal Elvive dream lengths now and have much better hair than most people I know.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 17/03/2022 18:43

Try Herbal Essences sulphate free shampoo and Faith in Nature silicone free conditioner.

MarineBlue33 · 18/03/2022 10:14

Ok thank you all. Not sure I can afford the time it takes to adjust at the moment but maybe in the summer holidays
