What do you reply ?
If it’s as simple as you want to start dressing a bit better to feel better

Used to get this a lot in old job as it was smart casual in the office but I'd have a lot of meetings and have to be a bit smarter, it was just easier for me to wear a smart dress everyday in case I got called out to a meeting and also saved on washing and ironing as only one piece of clothing to launder. I think the comments like that were to make them feel better about themselves and for you not to get above your station (always from women never men) I used to just reply "I'm going to a meeting where are you going dressed like that then" it soon stopped

LovelyYellowLabrador · 15/03/2022 15:04

Ohh that’s a good reply

Oh god I'm queen of overdressing Grin. My answer's (all true) vary depending on who's asking and how polite they are but along the lines of:

  • I don't go out enough to save my posh clothes for special occasions
  • I just felt like dressing up today
  • Nowhere special
  • I always dress like this
  • rather be overdressed than underdressed
  • I was in my Pjs an hour ago so like to mix it up occasionally

Do you think when people ask this some are just genuinely curious about what your upto ?

OP posts:
nearlyspringyay · 15/03/2022 15:20

Because I want to?

lechatnoir · 15/03/2022 15:21

Well I know if I see a friend who is normally in jeans and jumper suddenly appear with full make up and smartly dressed I would compliment them and ask if they're going anywhere nice out of genuine curiosity - definitely no jealousy / malice so assume most people do it to me for the same reasons. If they don't that's their problem not mine Smile

Going on an errand.

Deathraystare · 15/03/2022 15:32

Just tap the side of your nose and wink!

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/03/2022 15:41

It's rare to see people dressed nicely these days though, that's why it stands out when you do.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to look nice.

DetailMouse · 15/03/2022 15:41

I'd just take it as polite interest/making conversation. There's no need for a snide retort. If they were being snippy, you just demonstrate they've hit the mark, if they were just interested, you've been unnecessarily rude.

An honest reply or thanks, glad you like it is fine

LovelyYellowLabrador · 15/03/2022 15:42

Just tap the side of your nose and wink! This is brill

I usually say one of the below - depending on the situation and how well I know the person.

A) I always dress like this (which I generally do)

B) I like to dress this way, because if I feel like I look good then I feel good.

AwayInMyMind · 15/03/2022 18:19
  1. Seeing my lover after work.
  2. Funeral.
  3. Job interview.
Fairislefandango · 15/03/2022 18:29

Say "Wouldn't you like to know!" with a mysterious expression.

Or act as though it's a fulsome compliment and say "Oh thank you - yes, I like this outfit!"

LovelyYellowLabrador · 15/03/2022 21:06

Dango !! I can just imagine the face 🧐🧐person thinkkng hey that’s not what I said !

OP posts:
Amelion · 15/03/2022 21:25

It depends how it’s said!

At my work it wouldn’t be unusual for one colleague to say to another ‘ohh you look nice are you off somewhere?’ As in - assuming you’ve probably got some evening plans after work? It’s just a compliment/conversation starter.

But I’ve also heard the sneering ‘you look overdressed/why are you making an effort/who do you think you are’ so I think context and delivery are key to know what the right response is….!

wiltingflower · 15/03/2022 21:30

Depends on why it's being said but options could include

  1. Thank you

And/or with

  1. What do you mean? / Why do you say that?

And/or

  1. I suppose I do compared to your casual ensemble today, not got any meetings/having a dress down day are we? (With a classic smile or tinkly laugh or head tilt)
pawpaws2022 · 15/03/2022 23:12

I usually just say I felt like it
Although I had an outfit on for work and my boss asked me who's funeral it was. Told him I hadn't decided yet Grin
He's never commented since

LovelyYellowLabrador · 16/03/2022 00:41

GrinGrin you guys crack me up!
