I need a miracle for my thick frizzy hair!

MistyQuigley · 15/03/2022 12:23

Help! I have very thick frizzy hair, if left to dry naturally it is so out of control I couldn't leave the house without tying it up or straightening it.

I feel like I've tried everything, I gave the curly girl method a go in lockdown with absolutely no success, I spent a fortune on olaplex after friends raved about it - it made no difference! I don't think it's actually that damaged so "repair" products don't really do anything. I've tried all the oils etc!

What can I do!? I'm going on my first holiday abroad since before the pandemic soon and would love to not spend half of it straightening my hair.

It's naturally wavy and I'd love to find a way to have wavy hair that's not a frizzy (or crusty!) Or am I destined to a lifelong relationship with my ghds?

Brazilian blow dry. About £160 in the salon, or you can buy a box which you can DIY twice.for £30 on Amazon. Absolutely transformative.

VaulterTech · 15/03/2022 12:30

Sorry to hijack op, do you have a recommendation for one @TonkaTruckduck please? I Spent a lot of time on Amazon last night but still not purchased one!

mumonthehill · 15/03/2022 12:30

I second the Brazilian blow dry, you can buy it on Amazon. However it takes a while and good hot straighteners! It also smells quite a bit when you do it, however my hair feels amazing afterwards!

Redkin Frizz Dismiss

L'Oréal extraordinary oil

Both excellent

WaitinginVain · 15/03/2022 12:34

Kerastase Elixir Ultime oil - either the original or the rose one.

I have wavy, thick, frizzy, extremely coarse hair. How long did you keep at curly girl? It's changed my life (superficially obvs! ) but took so much trial and error. Some of the tips (such as plopping) really didn't work for me. 1.5 years in and I can get semi reliable results. I now find it easier than straightening ever was.

CatherinedeBourgh · 15/03/2022 12:35

I agree with Brazilian blow dry.

TonkaTruckduck · 15/03/2022 12:43

It's this one in the purple box. Others recommend a brand called something like choc a choice, but I've not tried it.
You need ALL the windows open, it stinks to high heaven, and takes about 3 hours. Lasts about 4 months though, but you must use the correct shampoo and conditioner.

Honestly persevere with the CGM method. It takes time and it is trial and error but you will get there. I used to get Brazilian blowouts and at first I loved them. I would rave to anyone on how they had changed my life - until I had it done one time too many and my hair started to snap off. Looking back I began to resemble a wet dog. My hair lost all its body and was flat. You might think you have thick hair as I did but I looked like I had a quarter of my hair left after a few treatments. It might have been my hair or the stylist I don’t know but I did pick a keratin specialist. I would try and work with what you have got and if you do go down the keratin path be careful- less is more!

Cantu leave in shea butter conditioner. My DD has thick frizzy hair and it works wonders for her natural curls.

Stinkymutt · 15/03/2022 13:16

I've always gone for really heavy conditioners and treatments thinking that my hair needed it but I've recently realised I've been overloading it and making it worse!
I now use a light shampoo and conditioner (it's a John Frieda one called something like weightless wonder). I use that and then, because I have long hair, I pop a very little bit of heavier conditioner on the ends and use nothing else.
It feels weird and not like it's worked until I've dried it completely (with a hairdryer) and then it just suddenly goes really nice.
It's usually a bit flyaway on the first day but nothing compared to the frizz I used to get, and the second day it looks great!

MiniCooperLover · 15/03/2022 13:22

My hair is growing back after a pixie cut and it's coming back curly in places, wavy in others but I've been using this oil after I wash it, leave it to dry and the oil is doing wonders! A small amount put through with your hands after washing is working I've found. All the supermarkets sell it, it's not pricey.

Agree with clarabel, I'd continue with the curly girl method, though check you're using the correct hair products for your wave type as many of the curl products can be too heavy for wavy hair. And although I haven't tried the Brazilian straightening, friends who have tried it (not all, but most out of a small number) haven't done it long term because of damage and thin appearance (apparently).

I have wavy hair and I do a variety of things to keep it in good, non-frizzy condition; hair masks, silk ties, hair bonnet overnight, silk pillow. Pre wash hair oils, daily oiling of hair ends. Also 'protective' hairstyle of plait, usually overnight. I probably only straighten or blow dry very infrequently, probably every few weeks. Still get frizz on super hot days exercising, or if caught in heavy downpours, but that can't be helped!

Essay there!

ArabeI · 15/03/2022 13:24

And if I need extra frizz protection I spray a bit of hairspray (Percy and Reed current favourite) on a comb and comb through hair.

Lemonem · 15/03/2022 13:27

I would persevere with curly girl method and try again. It has changed my hair completely

I’ve used this for a couple of years now. I don’t have curly hair, but thick, coarse wavy hair. Does a great job. I use ogx coconut shampoo afterwards.
Rosehugger · 15/03/2022 13:29

Curly Ellie products are very good.

ArabeI · 15/03/2022 13:30

I put it straight into a plait when wet as it would also be out of control if I left it. I apply leave in conditioner, Olaplex 6, then hair oil (Olaplex 7) then brush the top straight, secure with scrunching, plait, then secure with mini scrunchie on ends. I don't know how long your hair is, or style, so this might not suit

ArabeI · 15/03/2022 13:31

Scrunchie not scrunching!

Cookerhood · 15/03/2022 13:32

I would recommend going to a curly hairdresser & asking for their advice on how to maintain your hair. Once it's had a curly cut it may be a whole lot easier.

Iamblossom · 15/03/2022 13:36

I don't use shampoo ever and I put in lots of conditioner and don't rinse it out.

No frizz..

Thewindwhispers · 15/03/2022 13:40

Brazilian blow dry! It isn’t cheap but your hair will look glossy and smooth (and wavy) for about 3 months.

Or if that’s too pricey, a load of morrocan oil.

iCouldSleepForAYear · 15/03/2022 13:48

I couldn't get on with curly girl either, but have found the Manes by Mel YouTube channel very useful for sensible styling advice.

My hair is fine, low density, but wavy-curly and frizzes easily.

Co-washing gave me terrible scalp issues, and fed into what is either sebhorreic dermatitis or psoriasis. Confused I use a shampoo with sulfates these days, and it's fine.

I do try to go for silicone free conditioner, and detangle with a Wet Brush or wide toothed comb in the shower while this is on my hair.

Style with favorite product: right now I'm using Eleven Australia's curl cream. It has dimethicone but it washes out with a normal shampoo just fine. Sometimes I get better results adding the curl cream when my hair is soaking wet, other times it behaves better when I've blotted my hair dry first.

Using a t-shirt, or a big baby muslin, to towel dry my hair cut down on a lot of frizz. So does using a Denman brush to distribute product more evenly through my hair.

I almost always get better results when I blow dry with a diffuser. High heat, low speed. I read somewhere that heat activates protein in styling products, but that may be baloney.

On the days I want to use a gel (more often in summer months), I get Aussie Freeze gel from the States. The pink Umberto Giannini gel is ok, but the Aussie one agrees with me more.

elephantbreathing · 15/03/2022 13:49

If I used the Brazilian Blow Dry does that totally straighten hair, or would I still be able to curl it?
Thanks

Clarabe1 · 15/03/2022 16:04

@elephantbreathingnits really depends on your hair type. I have a lot of hair but the texture is fine so for me it just fell flat even after using a curling wand on it. Someone with thick stronger strands might fare better. I found my hair became greasy and lifeless with the BB.
