Does a properly fitting bra take a while to get used to?

I had a professional bra fitting yesterday and it turns out that I have been wearing the wrong size by quite a stretch (40C, turns out I am a 34F!) The lady in the shop was fantastic and talked me through how and where they should fit and the ones I bought, after trying on a lot, I was very pleased with. I am still very pleased I suppose, but it does feel strange having something so comparatively tight and supportive after so long.

It isn’t digging in or anything, it just feels very different.

If you have had a similar experience of eventually being fitted properly for something, did you find it strange at first as well?
Also, do they adapt quite obviously a little bit like shoes can?
The lady said it will give a little bit as I wear it but I’m wondering how much of this is also the wearing in stage.

This is ridiculous thing to be asking considering I’m 47 but I feel like it has been a whole new eye-opener!

Yes, it's a new sensation, it will take a few days.

JemimaPyjamas · 14/03/2022 13:32

That’s good to hear! I know it’s all fitted right it just feel so alien to before!

I had the same! New bra felt so right compared to what I had been wearing!

Out of interest @JemimaPyjamas what shop did you go to for your fitting? I went to M & S last time but I'm not convinced they've got it right.

NeedWineNow · 14/03/2022 13:56

*tight not right! Although it did feel right eventuallyGrin

nearlyspringyay · 14/03/2022 13:57

M&S are dreadful, they haven't moved on from the +4 inches. Have a look at boob or bust and measure yourself or go to Bravissimo or R&P if you have one near

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 14/03/2022 14:03

According to the boob or bust measuring thing I should be in a 30 band. However, every single one I’ve ever tried has been agony. I wear a 32 instead even though it’s probably a bit big (I can slide my flat hand under the band). I know that probably means my (proportionally speaking) big boobs aren’t being supported as well as they might be but tbh, I can’t be doing with feeling like I’m being sawn in half.

Verite1 · 14/03/2022 14:03

Yes - takes ages to feel right. To be honest, I can’t wear as tight as they say. I’m meant to wear 28, but even 30 can feel too tight sometimes

Midlifemusings · 14/03/2022 14:06

That is a big difference in the band. Either the 40 was incredibly loose and falling off you or the 34 has to be pretty tight.

WellNotReally · 14/03/2022 14:08

I'm with you OP - went from a 38C to a 36F, so not quite as dramatic, but it still felt uncomfortable at first. After a few days it was fine, and the shape is sooo much better. Bravissimo are fantastic - so helpful on the phone and really good service.

theglitch · 14/03/2022 14:08

It should feel supportive and a bit different but not painful. I remember a similar time when I went from a 36c M&S to a Bravissimo 30g! Soon you'll try the old bra and wonder how you put up with it.

But yes different bras also feel different. These days I measure 26 inches technically but in some bras still need a 30 (eg shock absorber sports one).

Branleuse · 14/03/2022 14:09

I think that going from a 40c to a 34f is a big jump. Do you feel comfortable? It might be worth trying a 36dd or 36E if you are finding it restrictive.
Also not all bras fit the same, so it could be the wrong shape?

JemimaPyjamas · 14/03/2022 14:19

Definately not the wrong shape or fit, it's not uncomfortable as such, it just feels so much more 'fitted' than my previous ones. In a good way but in a way that also makes me aware of it (as I'm not used to it.)

@NeedWineNow I went to a small shop where I live, an independent one, I will PM you the link.

It does seem as if M&S aren't very good, I think I've read similar before. Weird to me as I always used to see them as the place for mid range underwear.

Similar to another poster I'm supposed to be 30 band but it was just too uncomfortably tight. I gave it a few different days but had to give up as it was just agony and all I could think about. Surely you should feel comfortable and just be able to forget about it? I bought 32 band instead. I'm FF and still feels very supportive.

Gonnagetgoing · 14/03/2022 14:30

Yes. But I would say this. Some bras just don't suit you. I got 4 really nice bras recently - 2 were lacey stretch ones - Panache, and one was a moulded t-shirt style - the latter is bloody uncomfortable, wish I hadn't bought it, hasn't settled down since washing so that's £25/£30 down the drain!

JemimaPyjamas · 14/03/2022 14:38

@Gonnagetgoing the lady in the shop said as much too, that you need to try different brands as sometimes you just won't suit certain makes so it can be a gamble buying without trying on.

You do get used to it. They always feel a bit weird at first!

WellTidy · 14/03/2022 14:39

It takes ages to feel tight. I still can’t go down to the band I am supposed to be wearing (30) as I can’t bear it.
