Pierced Ears Help!

Hopefully some knowledgeable people can help my DD(11) out please.

She had her ears pierced back in December. All good, no infections etc. She's been wearing different earrings since she was able, I know they weren't silver, but they weren't giving her any probs.

Until Saturday...

She told my DH that one of her ears was feeling a little bit tender and she could feel a lump by the hole. She took her earrings out.

Last night I tried to put the earrings back in. They seem to have half closed up and the ear with the lump started bleeding through the hole. She was screaming as it was so painful. So we abandoned it.

So here's my question... should we just let the piercings close completely and then maybe at some point in the future we get them re-pierced again? (Months down the line etc)

Or do we persevere and try and get the earrings back in ? (I have Emla cream so thought I could try that...?)

Or do we let the initial soreness disappear and then in a few days try and get the earrings back in?

She's absolutely gutted that this has happened :(

get the earrings back in right away, but make sure they are solid gold ones. use the numbing cream, or freeze with ice. don't be too too tentative, do it quickly. otherwise they will heal over and it will be ages before you can get it done again.

Were the original ones that she had her ears pierced with the pointy ones made of either stainless steel or gold? If so, get those back in her ears with one smooth push and then make sure you rotate and clean twice a day. Don't swap to other earrings for quite some time and if and when she does, she should only wear them for a very short time and have periods with the "good" ones in. I had my ears pierced as an adult, 16 years ago and I STILL have problems as you describe if I wear cheap earrings for more than a few hours.

See your piercer, they are best placed to advise on any aftercare issues. If the piercing was done by a Claire's type place let them heal and get them redone properly once they're healed. It costs more to go to a proper piercer but this is why, anywhere decent will be happy to advise whenever issues arise, no matter how long after.

This happened to me when I was 11 (back in th dark ages) and my dad forced th earring back through amidst much wailing which seemed fine at the time but the hole ended up looking stretched and I couldnt really wear hanging earrings which showed the hole, only studs. I’d say wait til it heals then ask a piercer what’s best.

I tried and failed to get her original earrings back in. Blood came out of the hole and she screamed again so we just abandoned it. We're going to wait for the holes to close up and then go to a proper piercer later on in the year when my DD(9) turns 10. And see what they say.

Like a PP said, we made the mistake with her not putting back in her "good earrings" regularly. Lesson learnt. The hard way!!

Thanks ladies for the help :)

You need to be careful. If she has an infection it needs treating with antibiotics like any other. Letting them heal can trap the infection speaking from bitter experience
