Calling hairdressers and those who know about this stuff

I have originally dark brown, now going white but in odd patches hair (so not dignified just odd). I started highlighting it a few years ago which seems to work but at my last appt the hairdresser pointed out that the back is so much darker than the front that where I thought the roots don’t show that much, actually they’re not great.

Im paying £100 every two months, but worse, I’m spending three hours at a time at the hairdressers and it’s doing my head in.

I was wondering, if I have fewer highlights, will the line be less obvious (and need doing less often) or will it look horrible? It’s longish (sort of wavy) so the ends are still blonde and lift the colour.

So, options are:
A) Carry on as I am
B) have fewer highlights
C) go back to brown and do a home dye every week.

I'm not a hair expert but I hated getting highlights. I'm 31 but have a good amount of grey by my ears - not loads but noticable. My natural hair is dark brown as well so I know what you mean. I found highlights awkward and time consuming as you say. I now get a copper colour all over and I love it. It's lower maintenace I think just getting one colour all over, takes up much less time for me.

Not to mention it's cheaper aswell 🙂

That’s what I’m thinking, interesting to hear from someone who’s been there

How about a balayage? Might be easier to keep on top of than highlights as you could just get a root touch up at the hairdressers or do a freshen up yourself if you’re confident.

I had highlights for over 40 years, I have dark mousey coloured hair, over the years I have slightly less put in, but the upkeep is doing my head in as I don't enjoy the hairdressers, so the last time I went to the hairdressers was January 2019, so I am slowly growing them out, I do put a few in myself along the top and fringe, I did do this between appointments over the years, I find the back of my head the hardest to do I wish I could just grow them all out but I feel so drab with my dark hair after being so blonde for the last 40 years.

Dark hair with odd patches of grey which show up. Tried highlights, time consuming and costly. I actually quite like my natural hair colour so now just get the roots done the same shade (£35). The hairdresser puts the colour on, washes it off 30 min later and I self dry. I also use eSalon to get a root kit and DIY it (£25) - they can match your colour exactly. Much cheaper and quicker and I keep my natural hair colour.
