Hi all. I have turned 50 and have never ever had a beauty routine. I looked at my face last night and thought how old I’m looking Sad. Can anyone recommend some serum or face creams that will help me with all these lines I have on my face? They are so much more prominent around my mouth Sad. I am on a low wage so can’t afford anything really expensive. Photo attached for comedic value.

I ended up having dermal fillers as couldn't find a cream or serum that helped, but someone else may have found the holy grail product.

If you're only going down the topical route, ie, no procedures I'd suggest for the cheapest and best bang for your buck:
A.M
Vitamin C serum
A drop of oil. I use olive or coconut.
A day cream I like the Aldi caviar one it's about £6.99.
P.M
Retinol from The Ordinary
Olive oil
Night cream. Again, I use Aldi caviar.
In addition:
Really clean diet, low sugar, low processed, low alcohol and loafs of colourful veg and berries. Good oils in diet too.
Collagen and cod liver oil supplements
Frownies patches are also good. You smooth out the wrinkles and wear them overnight. Amazon do a cheap alternative that are just as good.

L'Oréal revitalift laser is actually pretty good. You can use the eye cream on deeper lines and it seems to puff them out a bit

You are going to need dermal fillers and a little Botox to improve the lines above your lips.

I am 50 and had exactly this issue. Mine are way better since the fillers, I have a little Botox too there. Then a little Trinny miracle blur on top.

Thank you ladies for the ideas. I will have a look into these.

No one "needs" fillers Hmm

doadeer · 15/03/2022 07:53

Could you afford £20 a month for Dermatica? You send them a photo of your skin and they sent a bottle of tretanoin which is prescription Retinol so stronger than over the counter.

Facial oils I have found the best.
I have one by florena that I got in a beauty box. It was on offer at boots for £16. It’s been great. Really hydrating on my skin better than all of the expensive serums that I have used.
So I wash my face with a creamy cleanser then I apply the facial oil. So my face is nice and slick then massage my skin. (YouTube videos for how to) and then a while later usually about an hour I apply my moisturiser.

It’s made a real difference to the fine lines I have and the texture of my skin. I’m 45.

Creams.wont do anything I'd save up for aesthetic treatments.

@MerryPoppings

No one "needs" fillers Hmm
Op asked about creams for the lines which will do eff all. The only way to significantly reduce them is fillers and Botox.

It's up to her to decide whether she lives with them or not.

TomAllenWife · 15/03/2022 08:19

Absolutely fillers and Botox, by a good recommended practitioner who can lift your face and fill the lines

Please don't waste your money on creams and serums, nothing is going to give you what you're after

Wagsandclaws · 15/03/2022 08:22

So I can second dermatica,
It's very good at radiating fine lines but takes about six months to work.

I agree with the above posters though and think only dermal fillers and possibly Botox will get rid of those lines completely.

I live near Bristol so if you do as your name suggests I can give the the name of my practitioner whom I use for mine, he's very good.

If not and I do understand it's alot of money to find then do try Dermatica as they will tailor make you a formula with retinol ( tret ) in.

CountryCousin · 15/03/2022 08:32

Really clean diet, low sugar, low processed, low alcohol and loads of colourful veg and berries. Good oils in diet too.

This. A really good diet will perk up your face significantly over time.

Plus something like Paula’s Choice BHA Liquid Exfoliant which somehow erases wrinkles.

And (really sorry, but pertinent to me too,) some dental / orthodontic work to increase volume of teeth / gums. I’ve seen denture work in much older people that made a real difference to the structure of their faces, so I presume this could be done with one’s own teeth too.

ArabeI · 15/03/2022 14:29

Fillers might give an instant reduction in the lines, but cost, and possibly other factors, an issue.

You've had some good advice for cheaper alternatives. I'd say try facial yoga, retinol - the tretinoin/retinol somebody has linked to gives a free month and I don't think you'd use that every day to begin with so might last a while. There might be other retinols you could buy but I don't have any personal recommendations.

Glycolic acid peels (neutralise with bicarbonate of soda) some say helps with pores and fine lines. Also general making sure to drink plenty of water and exercise to aid good skin condition.

PAFMO · 15/03/2022 14:52

If you're after a skincare routine, then ingredients which will help with ageing, as others have said, are vitamin C and retinol. An AHA acid like glycolic is also good for mature skin. (BHA acids work differently by sucking gunk out of pores and so are suited to oily and blemish prone)

LadyBristol · 21/03/2022 11:17

Thank you all. Have ordered with Dermatica and will look at all the other options
