Please recommend me a silicone free face moisturiser

I’ve only just discovered what has been going wrong with my makeup. Not every time but often enough for it to be annoying and very inconvenient, i put on a tinted moisturiser and it all crumbs off. Apparently the technical term is piling. Some internet research tells me that my moisturiser likely causes this due to it probably containing silicones. I have dry, quite delicate skin so I do need a moisturiser underneath my tinted moisturiser. Can anyone recommend a moisturiser that is definitely silicone free? I have looked at some ingredient lists but feel like I need a chemistry book on standby as the silicones are well disguised…

FWIW I have been using a Beauty pie moisturiser and Trinny London BFF destress on top. I’m open to any brands - just not the crazy £100+ pots. My skin is approaching 50 so I want to look after it.

I am pretty good at spotting them, they end in -cone or -xane. Ive had a look at a couple of moisturisers I use and they all contain Dimethicone which is a bit of a revelation to me!

I am certainly no expert but by the looks of it The Ordinary moisturiser doesn't contain any 'cones or 'xanes www.cultbeauty.co.uk/the-ordinary-natural-moisturising-factors-ha-30ml/11396687.html . You could contact them to make sure, they are very good at answering questions about their products.

Sukin.

Thanks, I’m down the rabbit hole at the moment :)

So I went into SpaceNK today and asked the sales assistant if they could recommend a silicone free moisturiser. I though they would give me a long list of options but they were completely stumped. Hmmm. So I went and looked at some ingredient lists myself in the store. The Ordinary have a (very reasonably priced) moisturiser which appears not to have any “-ones” as does Kiehl’s ultra face cream. Unfortunately they didn’t have a sample of the Kiehl’s but I tested the other. Seems ok. I feel like there must be some lovely natural brands out there though..
Caudelie is also promising.

Just checked mine (versed dew point) and it doesn’t seem to have any, I’m surprised so many moisturisers seem to have it, I thought it was more usual in primers?

Liveliferun · 14/03/2022 20:43

Thank you - I had never heard of Versed, it sounds like another good one.
I’ve been quite surprised myself at how prevalent it is. Even quite premium products (Charlotte tilbury magic cream for example) seem to have it.

Correction, Kiehl’s does unfortunately contain silicones - they emailed me back.
I think I will order the ordinary to try it out as it definitely does not contain them. And it’s very inexpensive.

If you wanted to go for a more natural brand then Tropic or Weleda are both good, although Tropic is run as a MLM the products are actually very good. Or try the Ordinary one, they know what they’re doing and it’s cheap as chips.

AdamRyan · 15/03/2022 09:21

I use this one qnd highly recommend it although it does smell a bit odd at first

GettingStuffed · 15/03/2022 09:29

It looks like some Simple moisturisers are silicone free.

mewkins · 15/03/2022 09:44

Weleda skin food light is amazing. It actually moisturises your skin rather than sits of top of it

Liveliferun · 15/03/2022 09:55

Thank you all! Some great suggestions here.

I think the cerave pm moisturiser is silicone free. Its a brilliant moisturiser; lightweight, absorbs well and make up goes on really well on top of it. Its the only moisturiser I use

Liveliferun · 15/03/2022 13:58

Thanks! I’ve just been browsing in Boots. Talk about down the rabbit hole. Unfortunately cerave does seem to have Dimethicone. To avoid this frequent piling another suggestion I found online is to leave more time (like 30mins) for your moisturiser to sink in (or evaporate which it seems is what silicone does but I am no expert) but I am usually in too much of a rush getting to work etc.
I am probably going to order the ordinary one and then treat myself to a very natural, lovely smelling face oil. However many of them seem to have sunflower seed oil as the carrier (eg trilogy rose hip) which seems a bit yuck, and cheap.
Anyone got a face oil they love? I fancy Neroli or Rose…but open to anything.

Facetheory is great, regularly an offer on (I think there’s 20% or 25% off at the moment). Prices are reasonable IMO and if you like it, they do price saves for buying two pots at once. They also do a 365 day guarantee if you don’t get one with something, quibble-free refunds. They don’t have silicones, they use something else vegetable-based instead. I don’t get on with silicones but really like Facetheory moisturisers. I honestly don’t work for them Grin I use the Amil C Whip for my combination skin during the day, Bakuluronic for night, but they have others for different types. I also always opt for unscented.

Also, Inci Decoder is great for, well, decoding ingredients lists. You can search a product or copy and paste the full ingredients list into their search box thing (it’s an option in the drop down menu on the right). Explains what everything is pretty much.

wonderspread · 15/03/2022 14:39

*get on, not get one.

Pommelegible · 15/03/2022 14:43

The Garnier skin active ones are really cheap and silicone free

bluebellsparkles · 15/03/2022 18:15

Sali Hughes has done some articles on this for the Guardian, might be worth Googling. I have gone on to use a Versed one and a Milk one that she recommended, both good and re- purchased. This is such an annoying problem, I get it too!

BaileysBreakfast · 15/03/2022 18:39

Dr Haushka Rose day cream is amazing.

AdamRyan · 15/03/2022 19:36

Super facialist oil is nice

Nutsohazelnuts · 15/03/2022 20:43

Neal’s Yard almond moisturiser is ace.

Liveliferun · 15/03/2022 21:32

Thanks all!
@ wonderspread that decoder is brilliant and a little addictive!

Hi again

Just a quick update on my silicone-free quest. I bought the "Versed" moisturiser that Sali Hughes and PP Kjr33 had recommended and I'm finding it very good so far. No make-up piling at all so far, and it's very reasonably priced, it soaks right in so I don't get that weird silcone-film sitting on my skin.
I wanted something more nourishing for night so I bought a very natural face oil and balm/moisturiser from the Ilex Wood.

Another vote for Simple - I love the Rich Moisturiser, and my husband (Fitzpatrick 1) cannot live without it either. I'm also a fan of the Vital Vitamin Night Cream. Both these are silicone free. and cheap as chips!

Don't go for the Water Boost Gel Cream, though, it does contain dimethicone.
