anyone with a good eye? interior design question on picture frames

Am just about to order a framed print of Hiroshige's Navaro Rapids but am clueless regarding frame colour - should it match the picture in some way, the surroundings or what?

I want to hang it by the stairs in our house. Walls are white, woodwork is white, stairs are carpeted in blue. Floors nearby are either off-white tiles or light beech.

Please help - plagued by indecision

oooh it's lovely
I would frame it in black myself, would be a great contrast with the strong colours and leave all the emphasis on the print.
don't think any of the colours in the picture would work really.

other thing might be beech but really I can't see past black...

Definitely a black frame!

has it got a mount ? or is the print straight in the frame, and if it has mount, is it white ? I'd pick a colour from the picture to compliment it.(there's a lot of blue in there - maybe a nice sea colour ?)

although a nice liquered looking black frame/white mount would be spare and Japanese-y in this case

lacquered

GeekgirlRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 05/01/2008 08:42

yes, it'll have a white mount.

might a black frame look a bit stark? I'm getting a large print (60 x 90 cm)

thanks folks

look for blue then -

MrsJohnCusack · 05/01/2008 09:21

blue might be OK

but am really loving the idea of Japanese-y white mount and black frame. don't think there's much chance of that lovely print looking stark with those colours.

(mind you MAS is an illustrator so knows a lot more than me so listen to her)

Would go for black - too many blues to choose one for the frame and it may end up looking like you tried to match it but couldn't iyswim.

geekgirl · 05/01/2008 09:58

ok, I have decided on a plain lightish burred walnut frame - it picks up all the browns, reds and yellows really well.
There wasn't much choice for blue - only two types and neither looked right.

Thanks for all the input!!

that sounds very good choice !
