I've found I can no longer wear black bear my face as I age (not sure I ever could but it's all I ever wore when younger). But what gas surprised me in I don't seem to be able to get away with black jeans either...why is that, I can't my finger on why as they are away from my face...

I wore an all black outfit on Thursday- Black boots, leggings, tiered top, black puffa coat. With gold jewellery. My friend took a photo & I looked like a ghost!!
I suppose my summer tan (which happened despite wearing spf50) has faded I'm now very pale looking - especially obvious with my new blonde highlights.

I'm 45 but I don't think it's age related, I do always have this issue with looking ghostly in winter...

So personally I've started to wear more makeup on my skin ie my Smashbox primer then bb cream (by No7 which is like tinted moisturiser) with a cream blusher.
Hopefully that will help me look human!

I swapped black for navy and very happy with the results - I’m 54.

Pyri · 12/03/2022 19:33

I’d really recommend using tan drops mixed with your moisturiser to give your face some colour which massively helps with making it easier to wear black

I’ve found now that I wear factor 50 on my face it does have a touch of the ghost but having a bit of fake tan makes a huge difference

I stopped wearing so much black in my 40s. For work I switched to navy, dark reds/berry colours. Or a bright cardigan over a black top for a real pop of colour.
If you add that bright pop it should take away from the black jeans.

SommerTen · 12/03/2022 19:46

@Pyri I have thought about fake tan drops.. just a bit anxious as I really am so pale

SommerTen · 12/03/2022 19:49

Also I do wear other colours quite often as well like cream or grey, and my work tunic is pale blue which does actually look a better colour.

HoneyItIsntGoodLuck · 12/03/2022 19:50

Apparently only Winters (and possibly only Deep Winters) actually suit black.

Not sure why it should matter for jeans, though!

Tan drops are really great though as you can add as little or as much to your moisturiser as you want, then build up the colour over the next few days as you want

I use the tan luxe ones and use 3 drops on my whole face mixed with a pea sized drop of moisturiser but you could easily start with just one drop

Thanks @Pyri

I’m 41 and I love wearing black! But then I used to be a goth when I was 13 and I don’t think I’ve quite ever outgrown that phase…!

HelloBunny · 12/03/2022 20:01

I actually only started wearing black when I was 40. Always wore loads of bright colours & patterns when I was younger. Only wore black, if I had to for work. It’s only now that I wear more muted colours, I find I’m finally sophisticated (by that I mean old) enough for black. Funny, isn’t it?

JammyCandy · 12/03/2022 20:03

Watch the Trinny videos on YouTube
There’s ones on how to wear black / navy / colour etc

She’s changed my attitude towards black

wfrances · 12/03/2022 20:11

I'm 46 and wear black but not full outfit black
I have harsh contrast colouring
Very dark brown hair and eyes
Pale skin
If im a wearing a black top I need to wear a bit of makeup or a red lipstick or I look ill

VerityPJohnson · 12/03/2022 23:49

If you wear more colour, it can look odd with black. Black sucks the colour out of other colours. It also looks a bit licorice allsort to wear black and just one other colour. Or like a Next work outfit c 1995. Black does not, in fact, go with everything. I think it looks best with more black, or navy.

Gonnagetgoing · 12/03/2022 23:57

I wore a lot of black when younger and returned to it in my 40s. Love it as slimming

OstrichFeathers · 13/03/2022 00:05

I've started wearing much more black now I've let my grey grow out, it seems to suit me better even though I'm pale (summer maybe?) and couldn't pull it off at all when I was younger. Maybe I've hit the don't give a fuck years

evilharpy · 13/03/2022 06:42

I wear quite a lot of black. I use Skinny Tan or the Dove gradual tanner to give me a tiny bit of colour and it makes a big difference.

I find charcoal grey easier to wear though.
