Best school uniform trousers?

Sorry this is a boring question and it's probably been done to death. But where do I get decent trousers for my son to wear to school?!

I am probably too picky because ideally I want cotton not polyester, but the trousers I got haven't been great, so I'm going to have to get polyester instead because there seem to be very few cotton options.

Preferably something that won't get holes or fading in the knees (like the trousers he has now).

The ones I got were from M&S (cotton skin kind ones, ok but faded at knees and OOS now) and eco outfitters (expensive although I got money off, got holes in the knees and faded badly too).

There are some cotton chino ones on the Gap website but they never seem to be in stock in his size when I look.

He's fussy about clothes so likely to refuse anything that is scratchy or uncomfortable.

Should I just get bog standard ones and accept that I'll be replacing them termly and f* the environment?!

Basically yes, big standard ones, they'll be more resilient and from an environmental POV cotton is dreadful anyway.

John Lewis ones have reinforced bits on the knees.

Tesco have great uniform trousers, long lasting with reinforced knees but they are made of polyester. If you want 100% cotton you can try Gap or even Primark ,they both sell chinos (they won't last long if your son is hard on the knee area).

I get the Tesco ones for my boys. I’ve tried Asda, Lidl, Morrisons and sainsburys but always come back to Tesco. Their jumpers and polo shirts are the best too in my opinion.
I bought the M&S cotton ones when DS first started school but they wear out fast on the knees!

I buy soft chino type trousers with a drawstring waistband for my son and they seem to work well. Cotton with a bit of stretch

My son is picky with clothes too, hates tags and scratchy clothes He's got sensory issues though.

They're polyester and viscose and best of all, they're pull on, so no fiddling with buttons or anything. He's never had an issue with the material and they're amazing value for money.

I’ve found the ones in Sainsburys (Tu) to be much better quality than M&S ones, in recent years

Thank you all for the recommendations btw, will check them out.

I suspect DS might have mild sensory issues but it's too soon to tell. He can object very loudly when he doesn't like clothes/shoes but will usually keep them on if we distract him so it can't be that bad.

With summer coming up, if the knees have faded/hole just make them shorts.

You're a genius, why didn't I think of this?!

I am shit at sewing but I could ask my mum...

@NameChange30 sorry I thought I'd said - from Next. My son flatly refuses to wear the stiff scratchy ones sold as school uniform but our policy just says blue shorts or trousers so he wears chino shorts and trousers all with elasticated waist bands mostly from Next.

ffscovid · 13/03/2022 07:24

How old is he? If primary age, just buy shorts. DS had holey / faded knees all the time and I got so fed up, I just bought him shorts year-round. Quite a few in his class so the same (he's 10 / year 5 now). He doesn't seem to feel the cold as long as his top half is toasty (thermal white T-shirt-style vest under polo shirt in winter).

@LaPampa Thanks so much, have ordered chinos from Next 👍
