What would you wear?

What would you wear to a matinee show at the royal Albert Hall for an orchestra performance early April?
Help! I’m a size 16 5ft 3 inch jeans and jumper and trainer lover and have no clue what kind of thing I should wear to this.

I’d probably wear a floral midi dress and trainers, would look nice at your size / shape too. Leather jacket and cross body bag.

But don’t overthink it, anything goes really so wear whatever you’re comfortable with

TottersBlankly · 11/03/2022 18:26

Jeans, jumper and trainers would be perfectly fine. Preferably clean.

It’s such a huge venue there couldn’t possibly be group agreement on outfitting. And matinees are never formal. Dress for the coffee and cake you’ll have before or afterwards!

DoingAway · 11/03/2022 18:32

Smart casual. I wouldn’t go on my scruffy old trainers and ripped jeans but smart, clean ones ok. Unless it’s a date and that might be a bit different?

TottersBlankly · 11/03/2022 18:39

It’s entirely possible the orchestra might be in ripped jeans and scruffy trainers!

thebigpurpleone · 11/03/2022 18:39

Probably a jumpsuit

ILoveMyMonkey · 11/03/2022 19:17

Preferably clean 😂 that did make me giggle - I promise to wear clean clothes 😁.

Unless it’s a date well DH will be there but I’m not sure he really cares what I wear 🤔

Thanks guys lots to think about and no clear consensus which in a way is good because looks like I can get away with anything.

If you really wanted to throw money at the event you could invest in a new pair of concert-worthy jeans from

Community Clothing or

Marina Rinaldi (you’d be a size 21)

And:

Either a plain jumper from Community clothing accessorised with a huge Jo Gordon scarf

Or just a fabulously celebratory piece of knitwear from
& Daughter

Because it’s sure to be chilly in the auditorium however Spring-like it may be outside!

Who and what are you going to hear, by the way?

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 12/03/2022 07:12

Anything from business attire to casual will be worn. Just wear what ever suits you and you will look and feel great. Have a good time.

BusterGonad · 12/03/2022 08:04

I personally wouldn't wear trainers but I guess from these responses I'm wrong.

TottersBlankly · 12/03/2022 08:20

Trust me, the members of the orchestra will not care what you wear. They’ll just be tremendously grateful to see a live audience.

I go (or went, pre-Thing) to lots of concerts, daytime and evening. I really cannot think of any where normal everyday clothes would have looked out of place.

Exactly- basically whatever you'd wear to leave the house in the afternoon. I've been to gazillions of orchestral, opera and classical ballet and there really isn't any dress code.

There really isn't any need to throw money at this. There's no need to treat it as any different from going to the cinema.

Well there may be no need, but the OP obviously feels this occasion requires a little more thought! And everyone here has assured her that she doesn’t need to dress up.

But as she has posted in S&B it may be that she actually wants some new clothes? With the concert being simply the inciting incident, if you like. I know I sometimes feel like that. Perfectly good clothes in my wardrobe but suddenly it all feels dull and I need something … extra. Particularly looking forward to an unfamiliar situation. (And I’m always happy to post suggestions for things I think worthy of note. Why ever not use a concert as an excuse to buy a beautiful thing one will wear for years afterwards?)

An orchestral concert really isn't an event people dress up for unless it was some major gala concert- like the Christmas or New Year's gala concerts in Vienna where there would be a dress code specified.

Covent Garden can be quite dressy but equally there are many people in ordinary, everyday clothes. The days of formal dressing for concerts or opera or ballet are long gone- if anything OTT dressing up could look more out of place than jeans and trainers.

www.royalalberthall.com/tickets/events/2022/film-music-gala-2/.

I'm guessing this is the concert- so an orchestral concert for people who might not otherwise go to an orchestral concert. It might for that reason be more scrubbed up than the audience will be for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra I'm going to tomorrow.

Pinkcadillac · 12/03/2022 17:16

I'd wear something like: dark blue jeans, a V neck fine knit jumper, an oversized blazer and my ankle cowboy boots or white trainers

ILoveMyMonkey · 13/03/2022 10:31

Thanks so much everyone.

@KimikosNightmare that’s exactly what I’m going to see.

Thanks for all the ideas. Im currently thinking dark (indigo/black) skinny jeans, a metallic (kind of rose gold) knit jumper, black ankle boots, wool coat - so kind of Kate Middleton casual 😁.

@TottersBlankly thank you for the links, my budget definitely won’t stretch that far but great ideas and along the kind of thing I’m thinking.

It’s great to have confirmation that casual is the way to go and no need to be fancy.

Thanks peeps.
