What to wear for apres ski?

I'm off to Meribel next week on my first ski trip since the early 90s. No idea what to pack for apres ski.

I've got snow boots, was thinking a couple of warm jumpers and pairs of jeans. Or leggings and tops? What do people normally wear?

Also, what about a coat? I've my ski jacket, but surely I'll want a change in the evening - would my teddy bear coat look completely out of place, or am I better in duvet style?

Really don't want to look out of place! Any tips very welcome.

We went to apres ski straight off the slopes, so still in ski gear

If you are changing I’d go cosy jumper and leggings/jeans, padded down jacket etc.
There are some Pinterest boards with some good outfit ideas.

Well, if you can check if it’s snowy and cold in the actual resort just now. Some ski holidays at night you’d definitely want snow boots on feet and don’t need to take anything else but if it’s a bit warmer down in resort you may want trainers at night. I was away in January and took leather leggings, jeans and various jumpers and tops. It’s pretty casual. I do take a different coat for evening. I have a light long black quilted one that’s warm with fur trim. Bobble hats if cold and leather gloves instead of ski gloves. Cross body bag.

I ski each each year and I always fly in my ski jacket but pack another similar coat which I never ski in (but is a ski coat). That way my ski coat can dry over the evening for the next set and I’ve got a fresh one for wearing out.

I take 2 pairs of jeans and my Ugg Boots (which are the only footwear I feel comfortable and confident wearing on snowy ground!) as well as long sleeved good and a few jumpers.

Each evening after skiing and showering I put a clean top on with my jeans and then that’s the top I ski in the next day.

I always take some nice scarves and jeweller to spruce up my evening outfits rather than any fancy evening/going out clothes as I’ve got limited space in my suitcase (I take my ski boots in my case).

I’ve always felt quite comfortable in my outfits regardless of whether it’s a fairly ‘na-ice’ restaurant or an apres-ski europop bar.

Anything else I can impart please ask and have a fab time! I’ve not skied since before lockdown now…

It's casual. I would take the padded jacket rather than a teddy bear coat, that will look out of place. Agreed the resorts may not be that cold, but I don't think you'll be in trainers. Snow boots are a look anyway, even if not strictly necessary. Jeans and top is fine, I prefer leggings and log tops/jumper dress because denim can be cold, but either way après style is not dressy at all, it's more like a slightly chic version of ski wear. Perfectly acceptable also to be in actual ski wear!

Oh that’s fantastic, thank you!

@GoodButNaughty would you recommend wearing a sports bra to ski in?

The key thing is to be layered - restaurants and bars can actually be very hot inside, while walking to them, or having a drink outside one of them will be very cold indeed some nights.

I wear jeans, leather trousers or heat tech trousers from Uniqlo (highly recommend) and my prized Penelope Chilvers lace up ponyskin boots which are waterproof with sheepskin lining. A long sleeved blouse or top and over that a chunky jumper. The jumper comes off if I'm sitting in a hot bar or next to a lovely roaring fire.

I don't bother with a different coat in the evening, I just put my ski jacket back on, and I don't see many people that aren't wearing ski jackets in the evenings - seems a faff to take an extra coat.

Have a lovely trip - Meribel is great fun!

GoodButNaughty · 10/03/2022 12:15

Yes! I’m a 32F so always ski in sports bras. Much more comfortable than bouncing about lol!

I love having my extra coat for the evenings too as it means my ski coat gets properly dry for the next day but agree it isn’t a necessity

Suzi69 · 10/03/2022 19:35

Agree with Wellwoman that layering is key. Restaurants and ski chalets can be surprisingly hot. I got caught out one year as I’d only packed jumpers; I was roasting. Since then I’ve packed a light, long sleeved top and gilet for the evenings, to wear with jeans.
I’ve never taken a different coat for the evening; as it’s freezing most people just wear their ski jackets.

GoodButNaughty · 10/03/2022 20:04

From this thread I’m realising how unusual it is to take an extra coat…lol!

Incidentally my extra coat is another ski jacket only it was (a lot!) more expensive than the one I now ski in (and fall over rather a lot in Grin).

As it’s a shocking bright pink it doesn’t match with any of my other ski stuff. I originally bought it as my ski jacket but it’s not that comfortable to ski in so hence taking it to wear in the evening as it’s rarely cold enough here for me to wear it. It’s my one luxury for ski trips with its fur edged hood. I’ve got to get my moneys worth out of it somehow Smile

I take an evening coat! I just hate my ski coat smelling of cooking food which it does if i take it out in the evening - usually cheese :) :)

I usually wear jeans, a long sleeved thin thermal black top and a tshirt, with a fleece and a coat of some sort. I find it too hot in bars/restaurants for woolly jumpers so usually end up just in my long sleeved top and T-shirt. My DH wears a T-shirt and hoody with a coat. Usually I use a second ski jacket as a coat but anything warm and potentially waterproof in case it snows would work. Plus gloves and a woooly hat. Then I wear ankle boots which are warm and waterproof with good soles for gripping on ice/snow (just some furry lined ones from decathlon at the moment). I shove wallet etc. in my pockets so I don’t bother with a bag.

That’s always been fine. This year it was Paris half term when we went and admittedly I felt a bit outclassed though!!!!!!!! There were some fashion parades on for sure !

LongGinShortTonic · 11/03/2022 16:33

This is all super helpful, thank you! I've an old ski jacket which I will take for evening, I've lost 2 stone so it's too big generally but will be perfect for hiding bulky jumpers under. Lots of layers, got it!
