Bought these Zara linen trousers three weeks ago from TK Maxx. I wore them for 2 days, chucked them in the wash (30c, low spin, line dry) and have just noticed that the seam is split. So annoying - they cost a tenner but that's £5 per wear, plus more landfill Hmm

I've literally never taken anything back to TK Maxx on quality, I feel like they'll just tell me to bugger off. But I do find it infinitely annoying.
Unreasonable to take them back?
So fed up with the quality of everything being shit.

Yes I'd take them back. One wash is not good enough.

Silverstreaks · 08/03/2022 17:46

Definitely return them.

Pigtailsandall · 09/03/2022 07:46

Thanks both, I'll go over the weekend. So annoying as I actually loved the trousers!

Make sure you take the receipt / bank statement and tag if you can . I work in retail and we won't return without a prod of purchase even if faulty .

I thought that was illegal?
gunnersgold · 09/03/2022 11:50

You need to prove you paid for it . Why would that be illegal ?

gunnersgold · 09/03/2022 11:50

People steal stuff , damage it and return it for money .

Redfloweryellowflower · 09/03/2022 12:02

I would return it. But you don't need to throw it away for a seam coming apart. Sew it up or if you are not confident to do so clothing alterations shops will be able to repair this very easily, or look for a pop up repair Cafe near you where they will be able to mend it for you.

BusterGonad · 09/03/2022 12:31

Because the goods are faulty therefore not fit for purpose. Maybe its changed but when I've worked in retail you didn't need a receipt for faulty goods.
gunnersgold · 09/03/2022 13:39

Yes but as above people steal it and then break it to get money .
You just have to show your bank statement and then we can find the receipt on our system but it isn't instant so ideally if you have the receipt it's quicker .. also with tk maxx how can they be sure you bought them from them as they sell sooo many brands . Companies have become tighter on this because customers return items they haven't purchased from them especially stores that sell so much branded stuff !

Pigtailsandall · 09/03/2022 13:59

Thanks all, good points. I have the receipt. I'll see what they say. I'm completely unable to use a sewing machine so I can't mend anything for the life of me Blush and repairs seem to be so expensive. I'll see if I can get a refund.

ImAvingOops · 09/03/2022 15:16

You shouldn't have to mend it - they're brand new. I'd return them.

TizerorFizz · 09/03/2022 15:23

@Pigtailsandall
I’m sorry, but what you have said about repairing anything is utterly pathetic! Get a needle and thread. It’s really easy.

Secondly don’t buy tat. £10 is obviously rubbish. Don’t buy this stuff.

Lastly - they should be fit for purpose. As they are Zara not bought at Zara, take the receipt. You should expect a refund snd then buy better. Check the seams.

Gonnagetgoing · 09/03/2022 15:42

Return it. You bought them from TK Maxx so they're responsible.

Queeniepies · 09/03/2022 16:41

@TizerorFizz what a rude post!

Maybe the OP does not have the budget to spend more! £10 does not necessarily mean 'tat' as you put it! You sound like an utter snob!

TizerorFizz · 09/03/2022 16:49

I don’t really care what you think. People should learn how to repair things and not send to landfill. They also need to think about ensuring we don’t live in a throw away society. It’s not right to say that’s all she can afford. If someone is prepared to chick £10 away then they really do need to think about the quality of what they buy. Many people are not happy with landfill and tat that falls apart. It is not acceptable that the garment did this and it should not be thrown out. It’s not snobby to say so. It’s pretty much what sensible women think now. Big better, buy once.

ImAvingOops · 09/03/2022 17:00

I've bought expensive things and cheap things and sometimes there really is no difference in durability. I've got a t shirt from Tesco, bought in an emergency that is older than my children and items which cost 10x as much which have been in landfill for years. Many many people don't have the kind of money you'd need to spend to absolutely guarantee a high quality.

bluepeacock · 09/03/2022 17:07

Wow TizerorFizz I bet you're fun at parties aren't you?

And what does "buy better" even mean? I paid £800 for a beautifully well made coat that should hopefully last forever but the zip fell off after a few wears! They replaced it of course, as will TK Maxx with the OPs trousers I'm sure.

The world isn't perfect, seams rip, buttons fall off - such is life.

It looks like the fabric is torn next to the seam, not that the seam has come unstitched so that would be practically impossible to fix without it tearing again. It would need patching which would ruin the flow of the trousers.

Skinterior · 09/03/2022 17:31

Return. I never buy Zara tailoring because their seam slippage (the technical term for your pic) is terrible.

Pigtailsandall · 09/03/2022 22:02

@Skinterior interesting, thanks for the technical term! Let's see what they say. I've usually had no problems with stuff from Zara so am really disappointed.

@TizerorFizz is clearly a troll, which is interesting as you don't often come across trolls in S&B. And nope, I can't get around how fabrics flow and I have almost zero interest in garment mending. I also can't bake, can't remember people's faces and can't understand rules of cricket. But I can speak four languages fluently, or give you an epidural. So I guess we all have our skills in life.
