Permanent / Semi Permanent Eye Liner

Good afternoon everyone.
I am seriously thinking of having permanent eye liner tattoo applied, for many reasons, not least that at nearly 67 my eye sight is not as good as it was and applying eyeliner is now becoming a real pain. I only want a thin line and only on the top of the eye. However, before I finally make up my mind I thought I would ask this "font of all knowledge" board for any recommendations (if that's allowed), any pros and cons and any experiences anyone has had with this procedure. I thank everyone in advance.

Hi
I've had it done. I'm in my 50's and felt my eyes were disappearing so had liner on my eyelids and my brows tattooed.

I'm really pleased with both, however I have a high pain threshold yet found the eyelids excruciating! I've still gone back for a 2nd time but it is not nice Confused

Yes I have mine tattooed, not a full liner but just the lashline, so it looks very natural. Very pleased with it and didn't feel a thing.

Just perhaps don't get lower lash line done. It always looks like a crazy harsh line and looks nuts when you are not wearing makeup

I have mine done, mine is just the lash line and quite subtle. I have the lower and upper done. She just did the outer 2/3 of the eyes and a very fine line so it doesn’t look too ‘done’ - it makes my eyelashes look longer/more defined but you can’t see the eyeliner itself really. It did hurt but once it was done recovery was easy.

I’ve had mine for two years and no. I think that’s a feature of older/less good quality pigments.

Thank you Twinkle71. Yes my eyes seems to be disappearing also ha ha but then I have always had small eyes. As far a pain threshold is, I think mine is quite high also, but thanks for the warning. I will make sure I take plenty of pain killers :)

This is exactly what I want katharinaRosalie. A very subtle line which is going to make my ever thinning but fair long lashes look fuller again without the need of false eyelashes Glad to her it was painless for you. I suppose its own to the beautician / tattoo artist. Thank you

Yes, that's exactly what I am going to have done, Have seen some pictures of ladies who have had both top and bottom line done and it does seem to look quite harsh to me, but as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :)

I had mine done (upper and lower) about a year ago. I paid £250 and I'm really happy with them. The lower lashline looks really natural, not a crazy dark line (I do have naturally dark lashes though). Do your research, find a good artist, talk through exactly what you want before committing to treatment. It does hurt, I won't lie... take an antihistamine and two paracetamol before the treatment to reduce the pain and swelling, and make sure you use the aftercare otherwise it'll scab and end up patchy.

Thank you FrazzledMCPremenopausalWoman for your helpful remarks. I will be booking my appointment sometime this week but will not commit myself until I have a full and complete consultation. I am going to the same place as my friend had her eyebrows tattooed on (she does not grow any) and they look amazing - so natural and not at all like the proverbial "slug over the eye" which you see sometimes. These are so subtle and this has given me a little confidence to use this particular lady. I have seen before and after pictures and reviews but will obviously make up my own mind after the visit - but its always good to have a recommendation. My friend is coming with me also. I did think about the paracetamol and I already take a anti-histamine every day anyway so that should help. Thanks again for your help

@TopSec did you get it done in the end?

I’m thinking of having this done as eyes need definition.

is black the only possible colour - could a dark brown be used?

Hi, not yet no. I am going on holiday at the end of the year and have decided to wait a month or two before having it done. I will update when I do though

Well I finally got around to have my eyes done last weekend and so I thought I would update this post for those who are interested.

The whole procedure took 2 1/2hrs, with the first 30mins just drawing the line, measuring and ensuring that it was exactly the shape I wanted, was thick enough, balanced enough and both eyes were the same.

Once we were happy the permanent tattooing started. Each eye was gone over 4 times, alternately, in order to build up the colour and thickness. After each time more numbing cream was put on before moving to the other eye. This was probably the most painful part of the procedure because the skin had been broken by then and it stung like the devil. However, it only lasted around 10 seconds so nothing to worry about. The procedure is fairly painless, with a little 'scratching' at times - and that is the best way I can describe it. There was very little swelling but some redness on the eye lid which lasted around 48hrs. Also the area of the actual line was tender to the touch for a day or two. Again, nothing that wasn't expected and was not difficult to deal with

The aftercare was fairly straight forward. I have to keep the eyes dry for 5 days apart from dabbing each line with sterile water (or garnier simple makeup remover apparently - I just used the water). This is to prevent scabbing so you must just dab and not rub as if you take the scab off forcefully then some of the ink may come off). You have to do this for around 5 days also and they recommend not using mascara and / or false eyelashes for at least 7 days.

I have to have a top up in October as, apparently, the initial ink may fade very slightly, and this will just top it up. This should only take around 1 hour and should then last several years.

I am absolutely thrilled with the end result and I have to say that that the procedure was far less intrusive or painful as I expected but lasted longer than I expected. The aftercare is easy to deal without too much trouble, and so far, I have experienced no problems whatsoever.

I hope this helps those who were thinking of having this done. I will attempt to attach a picture, so fingers crossed.

If anyone has any questions I am happy to try and answer them.

Hi, yes I did only have the top done - wasn't sure how far to go so I thought I would just go slowly. I am also 67 so was afraid that it would look 'too much', but that's just my personal preference. I expect a younger person could get away with it. The lady that did mine also does a line which looked as though it has been 'smudged' so maybe that would be better on the bottom?

You might not be able to see so well, but I have upper lash line only. I look ghastly washed out without, but find this to be magical. I am 50s and a friend in her 60s originally recommended.

It really does look nice! I don’t quite understand how you keep the eyes dry for five days. What happens showering/bath or just eyes watering? I use dry eye drops daily, would that be a disqualification, I wonder.
anyhow, it really suits you and is beautifully done.

Thank you KalaniM. Yes I am thrilled with them. However, I had all the exact questions and concerns but its not as bad as you think. When I had a shower and washed my hair I just put my head back - obviously some water got on the eyes but not much - and I did leave it 48hrs before I washed my hair in the shower. I used a cotton bud, wet with just from the tap, to just run over the eyeliner and then dab it dry again. I did this twice a day. This is really to get rid of any scabbing that may have occurred. i did however not wear mascara for about 8 days and then used Simple eye make up remover which my beautician recommended. I have actually carried on using that as I liked it so much. Obviously eye watering and eye drops are fine. I know it sounds like a lot of work but its not once you get yourself into a routine - and it only lasts around 7-10 days, although if you google some aftercare on the web, they say at least a month which is unnecessary (according to my beautician), but I suspect that would be up to the individual. I only kept up the aftercare for 7 days and have had no problems.

I hope that helps :)
