Hairwashing sinks in salons are sooooooo uncomfrotable!

Am I doing it wrong?

I start by leaning back and resting my head on the edge, but then the washer always says "Can you lift your head a bit please?"

This leads to me holding my head over the sink at a very painful angle!

It doesn't help that they spend ageeeees washing it too!

AIBU?

You are not being unreasonable, they are torture devices. I don’t understand how anyone can possibly enjoy the hairwash. Maybe our heads/necks are the wrong shape for the bowl?

MiddleParking · 05/03/2022 23:07

Oh I love them! But my head is resting on the bowl not hovering. I don’t know why they ask you to hover.

isthismylifenow · 05/03/2022 23:09

I ask them to put a towel on the bit where my neck touches. It does make it a lot more comfy.

SickAndTiredAgain · 05/03/2022 23:11

YANBU, I often think maybe I’m the wrong height or something, but it’s always incredibly uncomfortable. I just want it over and done with.

Iheartmysmart · 05/03/2022 23:12

I hate them! Am really short and the basin never moves down enough. I don’t think I’ve ever had my hair washed in a salon and been comfortable. Oh and I always feel as if my neck is getting wet even if it isn’t. My hairdresser offers me one of the kids booster seats now!

LittleGreyFluffyCat · 05/03/2022 23:14

I wash my hair at home myself before a haircut because of this. It's too painful!

applepineapple · 05/03/2022 23:15

My salon has massage chairs, it's my favourite bit! Grin

noblegreenk · 05/03/2022 23:26

They're awful! I don't understand why either because their are more comfortable ones out there. For years I went to a salon that had fab sinks that were so comfortable I almost nodded off to sleep a few times whilst having my hair washed! Unfortunately the owner of the salon sold up and the new owner put prices up a extortionate amount. I'd forgotten about uncomfortable sinks until I changed to my new salon. I found a great hairdresser but the hair washing is no longer my favourite part of the salon visit.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 05/03/2022 23:32

Ooh I love them. Especially if you get a hairdresser who does a bit of a head massage as well.

BluebellsGreenbells · 05/03/2022 23:36

Why can’t they be made out of mounded rubber instead of hard ceramic? Or even a rubber type overlay?

If men had their hair washed it would be a ‘thing’ so some wonderful woman needs to come up with a solution!

sleaf · 05/03/2022 23:39

Some salons offer a 'forward' wash, which is you sitting facing the basin instead of backwards.

So just sitting with your head bent forward? That sounds even worse I think
moonbedazzled · 05/03/2022 23:42

My old hairdressers had chairs that turn into recliners and bowls that can be adjusted to suit. So comfortable. I used love lying there with my toner on.

GenderNo · 06/03/2022 17:39

My people!

The towel trick sounds good. I'm going to ask for that next time.

They are awful!

I hate having my hair washed there so much that I stopped having my hair dyed, just so I only had to endure one wash rather than two.

No idea what kind of masochist says yes to the head massage.

And they can cause strokes

Toddlerteaplease · 06/03/2022 18:14

I've always wondered why they are so uncomfortable. Surely it would be easy to design them so they are more comfortable.

RestingMurderousFace · 06/03/2022 18:21

HATE them! They do however offer a welcome respite from staring at my hideous mug in the huge, overlit mirrors. I’d actually rather go to the dentist than a hairdresser. 😢

I complained last time that it was too uncomfortable and she added a rubber thing to the bit your neck rests against - instantly better. I don’t know why they don’t start off with it on.
dewl · 06/03/2022 18:27

They are hell. And yes they have been known to cause strokes.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 06/03/2022 18:39

And why on earth, when you're in such an awkward and uncomfortable position, does the hair-washing person do that weird head-massaging scalp-pummelling malarkey??

I never know at what point to say 'Please don't do that'
Are you supposed to close your eyes? Pretend to enjoy it?
The worst is when you can feel long nails raking your scalp.

Thank heavens for my lovely mobile hairdresser: I wash my own hair, in my own shower, with my own nice shampoo and stuff, she rocks up and cuts my hair and dries it. Job done in the comfort of my own home :-)

LiveintheNow · 06/03/2022 18:47

Just ask for the rubber pad, it is a semi circle that fits the sink.

rookiemere · 06/03/2022 19:30

I ask them not to do the horrible head massage @VeronicaBeccabunga , but then I'm really funny about people touching my head - I don't even like DH doing it.
The hairdressing sinks are awful, there's one of the hair washers at the salon I go to who gives your hair 3 shampoo washes and is very vigorous with the scrubbing process, I mentally shed a tear when I see I'm getting her.

Claricethecat45 · 08/03/2022 12:00

So glad someone has asked this, as everytime I go to the salon, I just thank goodness that I am not in England!

Have lived in Hong Kong for a few years now and in every salon, even the budget range, the hair wash area is my fave place.

The seats are reclining- almost flat - and you lie there with your head on a 'block' - usually padded, and the sink then slopes back and away from you ...if the Air con is on, you get the option of a throw to cover you.....the shampooist does your hair beautifully, and you literally close your eyes and sleep, if you wish...the area is usually dimly lit so it is relaxing; I have never once had the stiff neck I usually had when being washed in UK and cant think why all hair washers aren't the same arrangement at home. It doesn't take as much space as it sounds it might do, and no one here finds it easy to revert back to the UK way of doing it.....If ever you are in this area do give it a go! I think its relatively common in Asia and would have thought by now that UK would cotton on....

CovidCurious · 08/03/2022 17:22

Since I've stopped having all over colour I get less of the head lifting requests since there is no need to wash colour off the top of my neck. If I do get asked to lift my head I find it hurts less if I shrug my shoulders hard against the basin. Still not anything like comfortable, though, and I put my head back down the minute they move their hands away from that area.

StarsAndSugarlumps · 08/03/2022 19:50

@Claricethecat45 that sounds perfect!
