My skin is dry, tight and make up looks cakey

I'm 52, and I've been on HRT for 6 years. Over the last 3 months my skin on my face is dry, tight and any foundation just seems to settle and looks either cakey or patchy. My forehead stays oily though. I'm using hyluronic acid and a L'Oréal collagen moisturiser twice daily. I use either Revlon Colorstay or Clinique Beyond Perfect foundation but not sure it's right for me.

Can anyone recommend a moisturiser system and foundation please. I need the foundation to be long lasting if possible or maybe that's the problem. Happy to pay more if it works!

I have had dry/dehydrated skin recently and use my usual moisturiser but then use Eborian Cc cream for coverage. It’s worked well. I don’t like heavy foundation generally though so that may not be sufficient coverage?

tealandteal · 06/03/2022 08:28

Sorry I can’t recommend a foundation as I have oily skin. However I really recommend face theory products and you can do a quiz to find the products that suit your skin. My mum has found them very helpful for her dry skin.

CeraVe is fantastic.

I have dry skin and I recently tried The Ordinary serum foundation. It's so fluid and light. It's lovely to wear. It's quite light coverage which I prefer.

JustFrustrated · 06/03/2022 08:31

ColourStay is quite a mattifying foundation. You need a hydrating.

L'Oréal True Match perhaps?

Also try a facial oil at night after applying your mosituriser.

I driving CeraVe, both face wash and moisturiser, been a game charger for my dehydrated skin .
What sort of Foundation do you need, how much coverage?

Hugsgalore · 06/03/2022 08:39

Hi op, I tried a new moisturiser recently with hyaluronic acid in it and it caused the problem you're describing across my cheeks and nose only. I stopped using it and it took two weeks for my skin to return to normal. I think I had some reaction to the hyaluronic acid. My mam had a similar issue too. But with her it caused skin peeling like sunburn.

Hugsgalore · 06/03/2022 08:40

Also I use a facial oil clenser now in the evening and a lot of dryness has disappeared

Caneloalvarez · 06/03/2022 08:41

I had this issue with colourstay on and off. Some days it would look great, others all patchy! My skin is dry and flaky too. I'm using no 7 hydraluminous skin perfector at the moment, and mix it with a few drops of heavier foundation on days when I want more coverage. I'd recommend the hydraluminous range. I also use a good exfoliant (dermalogica microfoliant) and sleep with the nivea blue cream on which usually solves any flakes.

HowIsItMarchAlready · 06/03/2022 08:45

I mix my foundation (whichever I am happening to be using) with a few drops of castor oil. Gorgeous finish.

Caneloalvarez · 06/03/2022 08:46

Oh and I'd definitely recommend applying with a damp beauty blender, much better coverage and doesn't drag up all the flakies! If you want to try the no 7 skin perfector you could mix that with a little colourstay to get the longer lasting effect, and see if it helps. Other longwear foundations I'd recommend mixing it with are Nars radiant longwear and Estée Lauder double wear - I cannot wear double wear alone though, it has to be mixed or it looks very heavy and cakey. But it does give that staying power!

middleager · 06/03/2022 08:55

I agree re Double Wear.
I tend to use Estee Lauder's Futurist Hydra Rescue Moisturising foundation. Thia gives my skin enough coverage but without too much cake. I'm no good with 'barely there' foundations as my skin is too red/blemished and needs coverage.

Lately,I've been using L'Occataine oil on my dry skin and it's very good, but I'm fed up of pricey products snd need a dupe.

Also use Cera Ve moisturiser and The Ordinary red skin peel.

I have seen that Trinny has launched a new skincare range, including an acid based daily face wash/moisturiser. In the video it certainly gives her skin that sheen. I've been thinking of trying it, after seeing some good reviews, but again it's £££

dudsville · 06/03/2022 09:11

I often try new things but my staple routine is this:

A balm cleanser. I prefer eve lom but it's so pricey. I also like Emma harding. Not keen on the body shop one but lots rave about it here. I'm about to try clarins take the day off.

Then a glycolic acid. I prefer the ordinary but also like pixie glow.

Then the ordinary buffet

Then the ordinary hyaluronic acid

I have been following this with a the ordinary facial oil, and then in the mornings I would then add a few drops facial oil to my foundation and apply it like another layer of serum, so with my hands. I'm left with a glow and skin feels moisturised but but oily. My fountain has been the camouflage from Estee lauder. I have rosacea.

But yesterday I bought a pot of elizabeth arden 8 hr night time miracle and I loved it so much. My skin is so dry that I can use this kind of thing for day time too and it just gave a gentle glow and seemed better suited to my needs than the facial oil. I also bought a bottle of the ordinary full coverage foundation and think that might work well too, it's not as dry as the camouflage and I'm so rarely out these days to need to hide the redness.

Aside from the foundation I do this same routine both AM and PM and my skin has loved it. Dry patches are history and I think my skin looks good for my age, it certainly feels comfortable.

PAFMO · 06/03/2022 09:37

Are you putting the hyaluronic onto damp skin? If not, it will have the opposite effect as HA draws water to it to make it work.
You could probably do with a more hydrating moisturizer.
As others have said, Colorstay is very drying, and most Clinique foundations are oil free so might exacerbate the dry skin.
My holy grail is hydraluminous by N7, good coverage but a bit glowy as well.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 06/03/2022 09:42

I love the no7 range and you can go into boots and they can tent it out on you so you try before you buy.

Drink between 1.5 and 2 litres of water a day and take a fish oil supplement.
