Round of middle lost my mojo what style of dress would I suit

Just wondering what style of dress or clothing would look best on me please? I am mid fifties and have definitely lost my mojo. I have tried to loose weight but failed. I have an under active thyroid, anaemia and other heath conditions so I am not very fit and struggling with diet and exercise.

I am tall overweight and very rotund 🍏 shaped (i.e. if I measured my waist I think their would be very little difference between this and my hips and boobs). I definitely don’t suit an empire style. I have underlying health conditions and as well as weight gain I have also started with letting my grey hair come in.

I could really do with a style reboot and makeover.

I am just looking at a company called Eshakti. www.eshakti.com/default.aspx

They get good reviews and I was wondering if I customised a dress to (incorporate my height and roundness/lack of shape) what style would best suit me best to minimise my round middle my worst feature, what sort of neckline would suit me, what length of hem and sleeve etc?

Has anyone used this company and did you have to pay custom charges since Brexit if you are in the UK?

Thanks

Hi op hopefully someone more stylish will reply soon, but back in the mid 00s wrap dresses (Diane Von Furstenberg) had a moment and I found them universally flattering.

I'm not saying a wrap dress is peak style by any stretch but I just wanted to put it out there as a shape/silhouette (the current unstructured athleisure look is so dominant and does nothing for me)

I've always held a V neck as helpful for elongating the neck and drawing the eye vertically. Conversely, a boat neck can also work, balancing hips (necessary for me, not saying this is the case for you)

Thanks Paddington.

I usually struggle with wrap dresses as the waist is in the wrong place with being tall. These are some of the styles I was considering. I have changed the necklines and sleeves. But no idea whether they would work for a tall round stomached woman.
Thanks

Slight derail but would accessories help? Necklace to pull the eye up or a scarf to give drapery-ishness over areas of concern?

Also think of the outfit as a whole - frumpy footwear can kill a beautiful dress.

All 3 of the above you linked are nice, would think about getting your colours done and put together a capsule wardrobe.

How are you letting the grey come through- a restyle/growing out colour/stripping out previous colour. There are some useful s+b old threads on this topic just FYI. Xx

I'm a similar shape and age and just ordered some patterned dresses from a well known British brand and well I look like my mother and the cut was dreadful.

I have decided as a tall person I'm not going to wear strong patterns in dresses and go for stronger plain colours with a sharper fit.

If you find anything like that let me know. Also a thing baggy will make you look bigger

Wordlewobble · 05/03/2022 08:40

Thanks both. I love jewellery and know my colours as had them done years ago so fairly good with that. Its dress styles and shapes I really struggle with. Also guilty of dodgy footwear as I have bad feet so just can’t walk in anything not supremely supportive and comfortable. Will have a look at the grey threads. I am nearly there as I had blonde highlights about a year and a half before lockdown. I just need to revisit my hairdresser for a condition and toning treatment. When my hair is straight and smooth it looks lovely and not bad when curly and newly washed. But WFH I get lazy and leave it to dry naturally not washing it as often as I should.

Paddington I keep being reminded of my grandma when I look in the mirror and as I have put weight on and gone grey elderly relatives have commented about how much I look like her.

Doesn’t it depend how you want to look. Finding your style is better than being stylish. I have good clumpy shoes and hide my round middle under Cos style quite structural clothes and have a bit of dye and purple that takes me fro grey to silver streaked. Everything is relaxed fit and comfy but is generally perceived to look good or at least like I made a effort and works for me. My mate is all flowers and bows - awful on me but very her.

Wordlewobble · 05/03/2022 10:39

Maybe thats were I am going wrong I can’t really decide on a style/my style that I love.

I used to live in jeans but they are so uncomfortable on my middle in recent years I have had to give them up. Also couldn’t find a pair that fit.

If I had a style it would be eclectic. I love boho style clothing but also quite like the look of some of the clothes on Saint & Sophia’s page (but not black which does absolutely nothing for me). I like comfortable non itchy, not overly warm, non restrictive clothing and I like bright happy colours and some pieces from several retailers Boden, Masai, Fatface, Monsoon, Mint Velvet etc etc. But finding something that fits my height doesn’t fit my width and it is often usually only available in one colour black. Whereas I love coral, lots of bright greens, lavendery blue, teal, reddy orange, cream and I will usually wear navy as a base.

OP it sounds like you are a similar shape to me. I think the dresses you link to are lovely.

Quantity do you have any links showing examples of how to hide the shape with structure? I am leaning to the baggy as I feel I could be anything under there and that helps me.

Wordlewobble · 05/03/2022 11:33

EmmaH2022 - advice with structure sounds like a plan.

I really like the shape of the first two dresses. I’m a similar shape and I think I would wear those.

MaChienEstUnDick · 05/03/2022 11:53

I've similarly put on loads of weight around my tummy (thank you menopause). I'm short, so maybe not in quite the same boat, but i have found that I need to take the plunge and create some sort of a waist, whether that's an empire line or by french tucking a top or having a soft belt on a dress. It feels counter-intuitive, like I'm drawing the eye to the worst bit, but if I don't then I just look like a butter ball.

Wordlewobble · 05/03/2022 11:58

Yes its difficult to know what to do. I just remember once when a little but slimmer but still tall and portly buying a dress that was lovely but the inbuilt waist tie was too high up. I took it too a dressmaker and said she would unpick it but wouldn't recommend having any sort of tie there as that would emphasise my tummy. But yet a lot of stylists and plus size people still use belts or use those tucks you recommend. So I don’t know.

Watching with interest. Thank you

We sound quite similar. I have just bought 5ths dress ever in the Anthropologie sale. It really suits me and I feel great in it. It’s really well made and a solid colour, both things help, I think. They are very boho. I can only afford their stuff in the sale.
I also tried this one from Boden and it was for someone taller, I’m 5.7 but it looked great, so might be a good shape on you.

Zebra which is the Boden dress and which is Anthropologie please? These are both lovely dresses but the model on the first dress is so slim in knocks me off looking as I know these days I wouldn’t look anything like that in one. Just got lost on the Anthropologie website its pricey but some beautiful items (but couldn’t find either of these dresses). I noticed they also have a tall and plus size section too!! Is one of these dresses standard collection, plus or tall as that will help with my search and what size are you please Zebra?

Zebracat · 05/03/2022 18:18

I am a size 20. The Anthropologie dress is the red one. I look nice, I think. Can’t see the dress on their website any more, but it goes in at the waist and was called corset style.Guess it’s gone.Their plus sized clothes are brilliant and they do use plus models, I just screen shot the wrong one. I bought a coat at the same time and people stop me in the street to ask about it! Keep an eye out for the sales, it is the dregs now altho there are are still things I would buy. I can’t afford their stuff at full price. This one is still in the Anthropologie sale.
The paisley patterned dress is Boden, seems to be sold out although they have that shape not in the sale. I think non standard shapes and sizes maybe need to spend a bit more and get better quality. That’s my excuse any way!

Hmmm. Not so structural at mo for Cos but I have this - slightly over sized and oddly flattering.

I really like that in the purple. Will have to get my tape measure out to check the length. I am 5’11’ and a 20 so could be pushing it width wise. But I really like the look of the shape of it.
