How can you tell if you have thick or thin hair?

Or whereabouts on the spectrum of hair thickness you are?

I know mine isnt very thick, it is quite porous so can expand like a giant sea creature, but not sure it's thin either?
And is fine the same as thin, or are they different things?
And if you have fine hair, but lots of it, does that place you at the thicker end of the hair spectrum?

How can one tell? Is there a way to find out?

How long your hair takes to dry will depend on length, when my hair is in a short pixie it dries in no time and I wouldn't touch it with a towel after swimming so there would still be dampness in it by the time I was dressed. I haven't had hair past my shoulder since the mid 90s but DD2 walks about the house with wet hair for what seems like weeks at a time but won't listen to any advice on how to dry it. Typical teenager!

Yes I think you'd know if it was either end of the scale.

Mine is thick and I have a lot of hair too. Last visit, I went shorter from a couple of inches below shoulders to a long bob (almost shoulder length) and my hairdresser told me she'd cut off more hair than she had on her entire head. Grin

If I wash it and tie it loosely in a scrunchie it will still be wet 24 hours later. It has a slight natural wave but when it's straightened it looks sleek and stays flat until it gets wet again.

OldTinHat · 04/03/2022 18:18

@Gonnagetgoing - so true! Mine is like a birds nest, I can twist it about and it stays put without a pin. I also tried short cuts (bad idea) and a bob makes me look like Crystal Tips! I feel your friend's battle!

It's not just length. My hair is just longer than my chin. Takes 3+ hours to dry.

I've just measured it - it's 4.5 inches in a pony tail (and that's not all of it)

Sweetandsaltycaroline · 04/03/2022 18:55

Me and DD compared how thick our hair was. Mine used to be really thick but I think it's thinned out slightly in the last few years but still fairly thick. DDs is much finer strands but her hair is really thick. We each did a pony tail after washing our hair and used the same hair band. The band went round (I think) 4 times on mine but couldn't quite go 4 times round DDs.

@PiesNotGuys

I’d be interested to know too.

What is a standard hair grip and how do I know if it would contain my hair?

If you look at the hair claws in somewhere like boots or the supermarket, you’ll see most are roughly the same size. I can’t use them as my hair slips through so I have to look for small ones. Scunci used to do a really good fine hair claw, but sadly you can’t get them any more. You can also get larger versions for very thick hair.
musicforsmorks · 04/03/2022 19:43

thanks for sharing, i think mine must be in-between somewhere.
I do think hair takes grips, clips etc easier if there is some texture? I can use all of those but dont think my hair is thick.
It gets thinner at ends as i grow it long, so it never seems to have weight at the ends, it's quite wispy.

True that it is more obvious if you are at the extreme end of thick or fine. I used to long for very straight, flat hair, but mine has always been poofy with some tight waves. It is a lot healthier and happier since i stopped ironing it a few years ago, and has grown a lot longer as a result. The GHD's were keeping it snapped, split and short and i never knew. Actual chunks often snapped off Blush
Nowadays i embrace the natural texture but i do wish it was thicker at the ends.

Well, if you have lots of hair, you have thick hair, and if you don't have lots of hair ..you have thin hair.

3luckystars · 04/03/2022 19:46

I was thinking she meant to measure the hair bit and not the elastic bit of hair. Mine is definitely thick!

As a teen someone grabbed a hair off my shoulder and looked at it pronouncing it was like fishing wore 🤣.. I knew it was thick but as a teen you don't think you are different to everyone else . I still have very thick curly hair !

I have fine hair but lots of it - you know if you have fine hair as it's flyaway, doesn't hold a style and dries in 30 minutes naturally.

Meanwhile my elderly DM has fine thin hair and it's obvious as well - she doesn't have that much hair. Something for me to look forward to then.

pawpaws2022 · 05/03/2022 13:20

I have fine curly hair but lots of it
Takes ages to dry but each strand is fine and quite fragile
Looks thick but it really isn't!
