Easy ways to make myself look better?

I’m late 30s and I’d say I’ve always been a 4/10 at best but now I’m older the youthful glowy is long gone and I look worse than ever.
I’m not overweight - in fact I’m bordering underweight - but I’m not toned so I still look too big and nothing fits very well.
Hair is lacklustre and just hangs in the same ‘style’ everyday.
I don’t have a huge amount of time every day to myself. I’ve never had a skincare routine or bothered to moisturise. I don’t drink / smoke and never have though.
Any quick / easy ish suggestions? I am so tired of looking in the mirror and feeling despondent.

What you see in the mirror is not who you are. Facial features and body shape are not the only things that make you attractive.
How’s your self esteem? Do you love yourself? Like yourself? Accept who you are and what has happened to you?

I think it might be more helpful to you to start from within.Flowers

I would get a haircut to start with, it can make you feel so much better. I also love Trinny of London BFF, it's a light moisturiser that's gives your skin a great dewy glow without looking greasy.

But what I see in the mirror is what everyone else sees.

I started using dermatica, for me it was for rosacea, my sister did it for skin brightening, it made a massive difference to both of our faces. Google it for the first month free for postage costs.

Hair and eyebrows can make a huge difference.
A good tinted moisturiser or bb cream.
Drink lots of water, have lots of fresh veg and some fruit, reduce sugar. That can all make your skin look better.

I’m in the same position, but very overweight on top of everything else! Grin I’m on a bit of a mission to change my habits so I feel better.

Some things that I think could help:

  • skincare - I don’t think you need a full-on skincare routine, but just add something hydrating (get a hyaluronic acid and apply after washing your face when it’s still a bit damp), plus a moisturiser and separate SPF every day.
  • increase your water intake.
  • work on your sleep routine to get quality sleep with similar wake-up and sleep times every day.
  • find an exercise that you enjoy and do more of this.
  • work out what colours suit your skin tone. Loads of stuff on the internet to do this, or you can pay to get it done, but I think you can easily do this yourself by trying on your clothes and seeing which ones brighten your face. Then try and stick to that colour palette.
  • get your hair restyled. Doesn’t have to be drastic but it will give you a lift.
  • treat yourself to a facial, or at least a nice face mask.

I think any ways you can give yourself a mood lift could help. So be kinder to yourself. Don’t feel you need to have a massive overhaul - little changes to help form long term habits.

The mirror can lie !
Take some photos of yourself (or get someone else to) in different lights . See the good points

I got some Passport photos done , the chair was too low , I was loooking at the wrong angle , basically I looked like a Prison Mugshot Shock
Had them re-done , proper photo booth , some make-up (you cannot smile at all in a passport phoyo) much better

So:
Water
Some make-up even if its eyebrow and eyelash dye
I use Alpha H which suits my skin and my lazy skincare routine
Hair - quickest way to change your whole look , book a consultation

I haven't had my colours done but I did some online qriz , it said "Turquiose" , ugh !
I bought some cheap TShirts to ty on colour and found orange is good for me

Collect images of looks you like...
Go through wardrobe and ditch clothes you dislike..
I found that wearing a bit more eye makeup made me feel better as I got older..
I ditched clothes that were too flimsy or didn't work anymore..
Loads of water and green tea..
And never describe yourself the way you did. Your internal person hears and will be diminished by it so f that xx

Chocomelon · 04/03/2022 07:44

A good start is being clean. Not saying you're not but clean hair etc.

Hair cut is a good idea, something that doesn't need much work

Moisturise, lip balm or gloss and pluck your eye brows

If you can be bothered with make up I would do brows and mascara as well as lip balm. I wear concealer under my eyes as well as I always have dark circles and blusher.

A nice coat or jacket can smarten up an outfit.

Do you need some new clothes to feel better?

superplumb · 04/03/2022 08:00

I feel like you but I'm fat

Make up is a bug thing for me, and skin care. As we get older the glow does go.
Look at tretinion to start with, skin and me or dermatica as above. Or email the ordinary with skin issues and they email you with a routine. The ordinary is good cheap and easy to get on with.
Vit c in the morning....and spf regardless if season and weather.
Hair cut and some colours put through
Make up...maybe try a make up counter for help
Nails, keep clean cut shortish and a lick of paint.. whatever colour you like, or even a nude colour.
New shoes, comfy so you can walk ok. Good coat.
If funds allow, look at personal shopping in john lewis. You dont need to buy what they say but they'll give you an idea of what shape colours suit etc

itsnotdeep · 04/03/2022 08:07

I'm sure you don't look too big if you're nearly underweight.

Sure do the haircut, skincare and eyebrows - they will make you feel better and look better.

But what about exercise and diet too? Exercise if you find the right one for you can make you feel a hundred times happier/more confident. Meditation maybe. I agree with the pp who says starting from within, as cheesy as it sounds.

@Superquints

But what I see in the mirror is what everyone else sees.
Not entirely. It’s two dimensional. You are not your reflection. You are your charisma, your mannerisms, your smile and the person you are. Try to love and accept that person. Flowers

Lots of great advice here already but my tip is start with some positives..
Take good look in the mirror and note down 5 great things about yourself.

Pretty coloured hair?
Long eyelashes?
Good legs?
Elegant hands and nails?
Even teeth and lovely smile?

Build on your good points, we all have them, then work on the rest.

whattodo2019 · 04/03/2022 21:21

I would really start to out yourself first, time, money and energy.
Yoga and meditation
Have your hair and eyebrows done professionally
Have a facial and start a good skin care regime. It doesn't have to cost the earth
Buy some decent underwear
A few new outfits of key clothing. Perhaps use the services of a free personal shopper at one of the larger shops

GOID LUCK x
