Capsule wardrobe for British spring - HELP!

Hop27 · 04/03/2022 05:05

I live in the tropics and haven't been home in 3 years (thanks COVID) and need to come home at Easter for 1 week.
I have very few items in my wardrobe that will transfer, so need a few key items that will be really flexible. Anything I have that's warm is pretty corporate (for when I travel with work).

Key bits I have.
Oversized trench
Lightweight Burberry scarf (black)
Classic Burberry scarf
LV Damier speedy 35 (I know S&B hates LV, but I love mine)
So Kate 120 in black
Axel Arrigato trainers
Black fine merino
Grey wool knit
Oversized white shirt
Pale pink leather pencil
Camilla bomber jacket
Waxed black denims
Wide leg black pants

How can I pad this out for a week, casual with a few dinners, nothing formal. Don't want to spend big as won't get much use after the week.

I don't know all the brand's but for just a week I'd add a pair of blue jeans and a few t shirts you can wear under the jumpers / without jumpers if it's warmer. That would casual-fy things a bit. Maybe also another jumper in a colour. I think that's plenty though.

Kiopa · 04/03/2022 05:18

O I suppose for dinners you might want a dress (or two) you can wear with tights + boots. But depends what the dinner is!

Hop27 · 04/03/2022 05:27

I have this dress and skirt that I can pair with boots, I completely HATE tights. But will feel cold I'm sure !!!

Maybe another wool jumper and a pair of jeans would do it? Uniqlo or benetton are good for inexpensive jumpers. If you don’t already have anything suitable, some t shirts or light shirts to go underneath (viscose feels ok and is cheap. I love silk shirts but €€€). You’ll want a pair of tights to go under the skirt. And a woolly hat is a great thing to have in your bag. It makes a huge difference to your temperature and takes up very little room.

Ursusmajor · 04/03/2022 05:32

If you hate tights I’d probably leave the skirt at home and just bring jeans and trousers

NellietheNumpty · 04/03/2022 05:46

I think the 2 pairs of trousers will be the most useful items. Then that layers are your friend. Do you have a sleeveless top that could go under the blouse or jumper? Don’t forget socks and umbrella and something to wear in bed.
Can you borrow anything?

So:
Coated jeans, t-shirt, merino, jacket + black scarf
Coated jeans white shirt, grey knit + Burberry scarf with trench
Wide legged trousers, t-shirt, grey knit+ black scarf with trench
Wide legged trousers t-shirt, white blouse, black knit and scarf with jacket

I would leave the pink skirt at home if you don’t like tights!

The trainers could be worn with all of those.
If you were going to buy anything. I would buy something sporty athleisure which is fashionable here and could have some use later.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 04/03/2022 05:53

I agree with PPs, ditch the skirt. Add a pair of blue jeans and some basic tees, grey, black and white perhaps for under jumpers. That should be enough for a week with mixing and matching.

Maireas · 04/03/2022 05:54

Where in the UK? Easter can be very cold, a trenchcoat and scarf may not be enough. I've noticed that your only shoes are a pair of trainers. Maybe ankle boots or brogues as well? Leave the skirt, just the trousers should suffice.
I agree with pp - a couple of t-shirts and fine knit merinos would be useful.

Hop27 · 04/03/2022 05:57

I have lots of underarmour and Lululemon. So could probably make athleisure work.

Have a couple of classic Ralph tee's and some more statement mason scotch ones.

I have black Louboutin's (so Kate), also back ankle books but want an excuse to buy these.

Those ankle boots are lovely, practical and stylish. I personally don't like leggings, but if they work for you, fine - they're certainly easy to pack!

Maireas · 04/03/2022 06:14

I didn't know you'd packed a pair of heels, is that for dinners out?

Amelion · 04/03/2022 07:19

I was also going to say it could be cold - or hot. Where are you going to be? I’m in London and we’ve had snow at Easter before, but we’ve also had summer weather - high 20s. You might want to have some ideas but not invest too much until you know what the weather is going to be like.
itsnotdeep · 04/03/2022 07:35

I can't think you'd need anything other than jeans and trainers. Perhaps a dress to wear out, but even at the most expensive restaurants many people don't really dress up.

I don't know where you're going but if I was in London for a week at Easter I'd take:

Jeans (a few pairs)
The axel arrigato trainers
The trench
A blazer
A mix of tops to go with the jeans - from informal to a silk shirt
a warmer coat
a beanie and scarf (it could be cold, but you can check the weather forecast the day before you come)
an umbrella
casual lounge wear for when you're not doing anything
A pair of shoes that aren't trainers for when you want something a bit dressier - perhaps the ankle boots, but I don't really think they look good with skirts/dresses

The louboutins? I don't think I've seen anyone wearing high heels anywhere for such a long time now.

stodgystollen · 04/03/2022 07:37

I'd assume cold and colder. Even if it's british spring "hot" that's going to feel freezing after the tropics.

Maireas · 04/03/2022 07:44

@itsnotdeep - true about high heels, I've not seen anyone wear them in real life for years now (exacerbated by lockdown).
Good advice.

LizzieMacQueen · 04/03/2022 08:06

I'd add a silk blouse. Versatile and easy to pack.

The pink leather pencil skirt jumped out from your list as a perfect wear-anywhere-day-evening--drop-your-dinner-on-it-wipe-down-and-carry-on kind of thing. I was thinking you could build everything around it - just add a few more tops plus either the waxed denims or wide legs in case you get bored. And I was feeling quite smug as I'm not normally much use at this capsule wardrobe business.....And then I read that you don't like tights. Confused

I can't bear to think of you wandering round bare legged during the day (temperature, not etiquette) so now I'm stumped. Unless you have some boots that are high enough to fill the gap?

I still think you need more tops.

Hop27 · 04/03/2022 11:31

So heels are a daily staple for me, couldn't imagine not wearing them.

Silk shirts are lovely, and easy to pack!
The Reiss one is nice.
Check the weather forecast, though OP.

Thoughts on this?

Seriously though why are you shopping before leaving Aus? Isn't going to London without all the right clothes the best excuse to go shopping while you are there? You can buy Aussie brands anytime!

(I'm in Oz. I'd give a kidney to be able to go and splash some cash in London right now!)

Tezza1 · 05/03/2022 03:52

I love that Country Road cardigan. I noticed it's made from Australian merino. I haven't bought any Country Road since I was in my 20s. It made me look them up and I noticed that they're actually manufacturing a lot of stuff in Australia again.

Tezza1 · 05/03/2022 03:59

@LentilNameChange The poster is only going to be in the UK for a week. Having to spend time shopping in that situation would be a pain in the neck.

I always found it hard to buy anything in London when I was travelling because I was often strapped for cash and couldn't afford the things I actually wanted, and when I did have money couldn't find anything that I knew I would wear enough back home to justify its cost. I found myself buying stuff just for the sake of buying something in London/Edinburgh/wherever.

But, I've never been a style maven.

LentilNameChange · 05/03/2022 04:19

@Tezza1 very fair point, absolutely.

I guess I was extrapolating from your current list OP, and your suggestions for additions, and concluded that you are keen to feel like you've got the right sort of wardrobe for your environment, that you enjoy clothes, fashion and shopping, and that you are keen to buy a few good quality pieces for the trip. Putting all that together, I'd think you're likely to get to the UK and look around you and want a few more / different items to add to whatever you end up taking. So I figured you might as well cut out all the decision making before you leave and allocate a few hours while you're there to fill in the wardrobe gaps after checking out the street style etc.

But fwiw I like the cardigan too Smile
