Trying to grow my hair long. But keep having it cut every 2 weeks to get split ends cut then after it's short again ffs

But if I don't cut and let it grow for ages it'll be nice and long bhut also nice with lots split ends

So how can I fix this I'm stuck in the middle

Every 2 weeks?

Hmm

Ah, makes more sense!

You can probably go longer between trims if you aren’t regularly heat styling or bleaching your hair.

Olive oil is brilliant for hair! Literally coat dry hair in it once a week, plait it and sleep in it. Wash out the next morning with a sulphate free shampoo and use a bit of oil on the ends every few days if it’s feeling dry.

Super cheap and makes your hair feel amazing

I noticed mine getting a little thinner post menopause. I’ve been taking biotin for the past couple of years, since then there’s been a noticeable improvement in texture and it’s growing like weeds.

Thanks for replies

No bleaching but I dye it from a box once a month and it gets straightened about 3 times a week

I would cut down on colouring to once every 8 weeks with a root touch up in between.
Try to cut down on heat styling, maybe try different styles like a bun or a plait.
Also using a dry shampoo between washes if you aren’t going anywhere important.
And tell your hairdresser you only want the bare minimum cut.

I was coming on to say olive oil. Also Amla oil is amazing I mix the two and apply overnight.

worriedmummyofboys · 04/03/2022 09:03

Do these oils actually help protect split ends or are they just like a pamper treatment?

Yes the oils are very good for that .

Lavender24 · 04/03/2022 10:08

Mine is similar as it's very fine but I go much much longer in between cuts. Biotin did wonders for growth after I had horrendous post partum hair loss and I've also started taking Starpowa vegan collagen gummies so I'll see how I get on with those.

Lavender24 · 04/03/2022 10:09

OK I'm gonna try the olive oil too as my hair splits so easily.

ArabeI · 04/03/2022 10:51

Seconding Biotin. Daily hair oil for the ends (I like Olaplex oil best but also, occasionally, use Moroccan oil. Also recommend silk hair ties, etc

Also avoid heat, as has been said. I use various hair masks, including coconut oil. Though have recently started using a rose/coconut oil as a pre wash.

Very much a personal choice but I only have a hair trim a couple of times a year (or more when it was growing too close to waist length). I know of people (in a long hair community group) who cut their hair even less frequently or have the ends 'dusted' I think it's called.

Googlecanthelpme · 04/03/2022 10:57

Split ends happen because of damage so you have to cut down on damage as much as possible.

  • satin hair bands
  • satin pillow case or sleeping cap
  • always loosely tie hair back when sleeping, to stop it tangling
  • reduce heat styling
  • use heat protectant when using heat styling
  • hair oils every time you wash (apply a tiny bit in your hands, pat gently into hair lengths on damp hair
  • use deep conditioning treatments at least once a week, can be plain argan / coconut oil, doesn’t hVe to be anything fancy or expensive

Ultimately you will have SOME split ends, it comes with the nature of having long hair.
I have very long hair and I do have some split ends, I use hairdressing scissors to just trim them out when I see them - literally snip off the one split hair above the split

If you want long hair you have to stop having it cut - stating the obvious but that’s why I have waist length hair, I don’t cut it Smile
Although it looks lovely - it’s not ratty bc I rarely heat style it these days (praise be for home working)

I think this is known as 'seek and destroy' in the long hair community groups, but you probably already know that. I've done it, too!

Do I use oil in my hair every night?

My current routine is showering at night it's quicker for me and on the nights my hair gets washed I let it dry down before going to bed

Will look into satin hair ties and pillow cases
