I don't like anything anymore.. TANTRUM

From anywhere, everything seems incredibly overpriced for what it is, all the shapes and patterns are grim, and the styles are not my cup of tea.

There are a couple of stores I can tolerate but even then it all seems like a giant rip off.

It's the first time in my life that I actually can't stand any current trends or even anti-trends. All dresses are relatively the same across all brands, as well as trousers, tops, etc. I used to like Poetry and White stuff, but it all looks either shapeless now or cheap.

What to do? Well I could head towards used stuff, I do like old things but not the typical retro/vintage styles. I suppose I am fussy, but when I look back into the past (film, tv, etc) people wore such lovely things and in comparison contemporary clothing depresses me.

Anyone feel similar? That it's all just shite?

Look at this dress from Baukjen, it's a nice enough thing at first glance, but then they want nearly £150 for an unlined, thin, flowery hapeless gloop of ecovero (or whatever) crap. I give up!

shapeless gloop, sorry.

To be blunt, I have always thought places like White Stuff, Joules, Fat Face, Boden etc are not flattering or fashionable. I'm 42 with two kids so in their target demographic as well. I always felt it was for middle aged Carol Middleton wannabes.

What kind of looks do you like? Perhaps that can give us an idea of places to look for you.

suburbanwinter · 03/03/2022 16:44

Have you looked at Sezane? Pricey but beautiful :)

LouraLoura · 03/03/2022 17:05

Thanks for tips.

I think what i mean is i dont like styles or clothes anywhere at the moment, and havent for a while.
Even the higher quality stuff.

I think i belong in a different era, or something Grin

Agree OP. I've even started looking at shops I would never usually consider just to see if there's anything but there never is. The oy things I've bought this year are a couple of cheap hoodies and some leggings. There's just nothing!

WhoppingBigBackside · 03/03/2022 17:08

That dress is nice but it's viscose
White Stuff, Joules, Fat Face, Boden are ok but not fashion

I'd look at the high end high street brands including M&S. Seeing things can make a difference.

Tryingtogetitright · 03/03/2022 17:10

I was pleasantly surprised in New Look the other day, they had some gorgeous dresses with lovely details, the patterns were lovely. Didn't buy any so not sure on the fabric. Not high end but might be worth a look?

WhoppingBigBackside · 03/03/2022 17:12

Try Maje, Sezanne, Comptoir de Cotonniers (sp?), Isabel Marant Etoile...

FatFilledTrottyPuss · 03/03/2022 17:16

YANBU it all looks or feels shit these days and I’m poor so it’s even more dire offerings for the likes of me. I’m dusting off my sewing machine instead but I’m not feeling confident about finding nice fabrics either.

SoupDragon · 03/03/2022 17:20

I like Esprit as they seem to have such a range of different styles there's usually something I Like. They don't seem to have a single style to their range.

MoonOnASpoon · 03/03/2022 17:22

Agree OP. This is why I like shopping on ebay – all kinds of stuff on there including older things in different styles and better quality fabrics, and lots of search parameters so you can look for particular styles, materials etc. And you can pick up expensive brands cheaply.

I also like H&M as they do different lines and some interesting and different things. As has been discussed on here, I've also found some nice things at M&S recently – Isabel Marant style t-shirts and similar. Also Uniqlo, American Vintage, and Scandi brands like Second Female and Ganni. There are some boutiques like Biscuit, Wolf & Badger, Wild Swans, Boozt etc that have a good variety.

LouraLoura · 03/03/2022 19:05

Honestly i cant stand any of them, although i do appreciate the suggestions.
I seem to have just gone off everything, everywhere.

Never been a fan of white stuff/joules/fat face, although FF do some decent sleep tees!

But no matter how high or low you go, the damn styles are ALL the SAME! Except for Toast, now they're unique, just not for me, sadly.

Or there’s always sewing your own - I do that too. Do you have an idea in your mind of what styles you do want? You could try looking at the sewing patterns at places like merchant and mills, true bias etc.

Nutsohazelnuts · 04/03/2022 03:49

I agree, OP. I have been wearing the same few things since I had my daughter (nearly four years ago!) and desperately need to upgrade, but I just can’t find anything I like, anywhere.

Malibuismysecrethome · 04/03/2022 04:17

I totally agree. Personally I find it’s the colours that are so drab and grim. The bright colours are just off in some way, just the opposite end of the spectrum that I would wear ie pink, I like pink but I don’t want to be seen coming from a mile away.
I’m so over bottle green as well. I know Kate Middleton loves it but I really don’t! Even camel colour seems much darker and more toffee brown urgh! Rant over.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/03/2022 05:15

I agree that the stuff in the shops at the moment is not very nice. I described it as shrouds in the colours of sludge recently. I want fresh, nicely fitting summery clothes now. I am sure in the past the summery stock came into the shops early but our local shops are still full of shapeless jumpers and long sleeved tops. I am going on holiday in April have having lost weight recently I need new stuff. It's very frustrating.

Superquints · 04/03/2022 06:52

I keep seeing stuff I like!
I’ve found stuff in & other stories, Anthropologie, All Saints and Love and Roses (via Next).
Those dresses are very in at the moment but I haven’t bought any of those. They can be a bit shapeless on me as I’m fairly straight up and down.

Ellaraine · 04/03/2022 06:53

Totally agree OP. Im living in leggings and sweatshirts as they are the only items I can find that suit me now.
Everything else is not my style and doesn't fit properly. I just want a nice dress, top, jeans, skirt Angry

Kikifava · 04/03/2022 07:02

I totally agree, I desperately need to update my wardrobe but cannot find anything nice anywhere. To be honest I’ve felt like this a few times few different fashion periods but never quite as bad as this

Superquints · 04/03/2022 07:03

I could shop and shop at the moment!
Mango is nice too.

KindlyKanga · 04/03/2022 07:05

I would want sleeves on that dress for thar price

Appalonia · 04/03/2022 07:07

Totally agree OP. I went round the sales in Jan and all I could find were some leggings and a fleece. I had a John Lewis voucher and couldn't find anything there either. I find better stuff in charity shops tbh. I wonder what clothes are like in other countries? Am seriously considering a shopping trip to somewhere like Berlin or Barcelona to see what they have there!

ExConstance · 04/03/2022 10:29

I've found it hard to find things l like this year. I was in Cos the other day and If I had wanted to buy something I might have found it there. off bits of Me + Em are nice, though expensive. 2 mesh dresses, one in Ted baker, one in All Saints took my eye.

Zazdar · 04/03/2022 11:30

I would want sleeves on that dress for thar price

I’d want sleeves, a 20 foot train and a matching hat.

DaisyWaisy · 04/03/2022 12:10

Totally agree. I despair at ever being able to find anything I like ever again. That Baukjen dress is not £149 worth of dress. I now regret donating clothes to charity shops which were so much nicer and better quality than anything you can buy now. I'm going to hang on to what I've got now.
