Other than S&B of course.

I feel like I’ve lost my way a bit during the last couple of years. I’m finding the people I follow on Instagram have gone more high end and I rarely read magazines now so am not even sure what is in or out of fashion any more.

I have access to most magazines online so will start leafing through a few but would love to hear how you all keep current.

Have a look at Pinterest. I'm over 50 so I filter it to that. I also look at high street stores and what they're selling currently and tailor to that - I don't spend loads and love a charity shop bargain. Once you've got an idea of what you like you can look for stuff on eBay to make it cheaper.
Good luck!

Instagram. I follow a lot of people with quite a very individual and original style that you wouldn't really find in any magazine or high street stores. I follow lots of accounts who style using thrifted or second hand outfits and small businesses of handmade clothing.

If i am honest, and I feel like a bit of a dick saying this, but mine would be Shakespeare, theatre, Edwardian and 20's styles.
It truly sucks because sourcing such stuff and then managing to appropriate it in a contemporary fashion is far from easy.
So I suppose I just take small elements and weave them in.

But most of my inspiration comes from film, tv, pinterest.

I don't like contemporary clothes, neither the quality or the designs, so I would love to either:
a) Go living on a little bohemian island of my own and let it all hang out without having to care how weird I look in bloomers Grin
or
b) Be able to time travel, without the social and political issues!

I'll, er, get me coat....

I also get my inspiration from earlier fashion history! Edwardian style was really beautiful. For modern style I get it from fashionable women I see around town.

Instagram - not any one person in particular. I follow lots of brands that I like too but for inspiration not really with the intention of buying stuff.

Also Pinterest. And I have a look at Grazia, Glamour and a few others online now and then.

Thanks for the replies. I do use Pinterest, forgot to mention that. I’m probably on the slightly quirkier side of classic but I love the sound of your styles @musicforsmorks and @QueenSue

I don't follow people/influencers or read magazines. I DO follow Vogue and Browns on Instagram though. I live in east London so go to lots of sample sales nearby and I think I get exposed to more fashion than I consciously realise because of where I live. I just buy things I like. I don't think about is this "in" or not. But what I buy seems to be "in" about 12 months later usually. So I give all credit to my area and the seemingly hip people around me!

IcyWinterWonderland · 03/03/2022 17:12

I look at outfits on pinterest

Art. Portraits of human beings through time, from Benin bronzes to Louise Bourgeois. What we do with our appearance to give ourselves presence. And, as the people with the talent and training to comprehend this best are clothes designers I’m primarily inspired by how they interpret the Zeitgeist every season. (Which is not the same as saying I rush out and buy entire catwalk collections. I know some MN posters struggle with the meaning of the term ‘inspiration’ …)

I’m completely at odds with any attitude that attempts to restrict clothing choice by virtue of age, or weight, or relative social position. Everyone should feel free to look as fantastic as they possibly can.

My gut. If I find something that I absolutely must have then I know it's going to be worn to death.

Who What Wear

I get regular emails from this site. Gives me some ideas about trends.

Had my shape and colour down a couple of years ago. That’s helped me enormously as to what styles suit me best. I’m now a lot better at choosing choose clothes that fit my personality, shape and colour season. Also, I ignore advice that xyz is the place to shop, and choose clothes I like whether it’s sainsbury, , Seasalt or Sosander,

I also like Who, What, Wear. I follow lots of “normal people” on Instagram, who have a similar style to me, plus a handful of influencers. I do still like magazines and have Grazia and Red delivered - the fashion stories tend to be too high end for me but the roundup pages are more high street. I am also quite bad for popping in past the “new in” sections of my favourite websites each week (Other Stories, cos, Arket mainly).

Thanks, I’ve really enjoyed reading different ways of doing things and I have some new places to look.
